KNOWLEDGE AND BARRIERS ABOUT FAMILY PLANNING USE AMONG WOMEN

OF REPRODUCTIVE AGES.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Globally, family planning services are an essential element of reproductive

health care and have saved the lives and protected the health of millions of
women and children(UNFPA,2003). Family planning plays a vital role in the
reduction of infant. Child and maternal morbidity and mortality due to
reduction of risks from pregnancy. For women, family planning result in better
employment opportunities, higher socioeconomic status empolment worldwide
in 2015. 67% of married or in-union women of reproductive age used a modern
method of family planning constituting 90% of contraceptive users.

In developing countries, increased contraceptive use has already cut the annual
unmber of maternal death by 50% over the pass 15years and reduced the
maternal mortality ratio by about 20%. Expanding the number of women in the
workforce by increasing contraceptive use could increased per capital income in
some countries by as much as 15% by 2020 and 25% by 2030 in many developing
countries. In Africa, family planning prevalence is projected to increase from 17
to 27 percent, from 23 to 34 percent middle African and from 40 to 55 percent in
Eastern. Family planning prevalence in 2015 was several times as high as in
Northern and Southern Africa 53 percent and 64 percent, respectively as in
Middle Africa. In Africa, contraceptive use has been inceased recently.

In Ghana, it has been a combination of hard work, Government commitment,

coordination and partnership that family planning is recognized as essential for
one of the most densely populated country in Africa. The government
recognizes the importance of family for poverty reduction and the development
of the country. Vision 2020 lays out ambitious goals including reaching a
contraceptive prevalence rate of 80% by 2018 (MOH,2008). Furthermore, the
Ghana government has addressed the cost of family planning services where it
has included a budget line item for contraceptive since 2007. In addition the
USAID and UNFPA have been the two primary supporters of contraceptive
procurement.

Different reports indicate the “the reasons why women do not use
contraceptives most commonly include insufficient knowledge about
importance of family planning.” The study said a large number of women who
have not planned on immediately having a child find themselves pregnant. This
was attributed to lack of knowledge about contraceptivemethod or lack of
awareness about their fertility period. In addition to these, many women
abstain from family planning due to rumors from entourage and peer groups.

PROBLEM STATED

Although government of Ghana have put a lot of efforts in family planning

services such as annual allocation of budget for contraceptives and service
provision of family planning service on public insurance and training of health
professionals for specific family planning service the data obtained from Asempa
neye health centre indicate that over 70% women in the area are not using
available family planning services. This was identified during the recent
community health placement at the area of Asempa neye. Data indicated that
the total annual family planning attendance in 2013 was level of 65%, 49.8% in
2014, 30.3% in 2015 at the end of 2016.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to assess the knowledge and barriers about family
planning uses among women in reproductive ages in the area of Asempa neye
Health Centre.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

1. To determine the level of participants knowledge about family planning

use.
2. To find out family planning barriers experienced by women in
reproductive ages in the health centre.
3. To find out cultural factors associated with family planning use in women
in the area of the Asempa neye health centre.
4. To identify the socio-economic factors associated with family planning use
among women in Asempa Neye area.

RESEARCH QUESTION

1. What is the extent of participants knowledge about family planning

use?
2. What are the barriers of family planning usage experienced by
women in productive ages of Asempa Neye health centre?
3. What are the culture factors associated with family planning use in
women in the area of Asempa Neye?
4. What are socio-economic factors associated with family planning
use among women in the area of Asempa Neye?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be a good opportunity for research team to enrich their
knowledge through deeply searching and understanding various literatures
relevant to knowledge use and barriers about family planning among women in
areas of Asempa Neye health centre. The result of this study will generate
information that will be used as reference for further researches and this will
constitute the basis on which to rely on in strengthening family planning in
Ghana and abroad. Specifically, the results of this study will be used to address
the special needs of women in the area of Asempa Neye health centre about ues
of family planning.

DELIMITATION

The main focus of this study is the knowledge and barriers about family
planning among women of reproductive ages. This should have been extended
to all health centres in the country. In the space, the field of the study will be
limited to area of Asempa Neye. In the domain, the study will be oriented in the
fields of clinical medicine and community health.

LIMITATION

This will be a cross-sectional study. The study participants will be selected using
stratified sampling methods. The study population are the women in
reproductive ages in area of the Asempa Neye health centre. Face to the
interview will be conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire to collect
data from participants.
