Design and Development of FPGA Based

Data Acquisition System

Introduction:-
Data acquisition systems (DAQ) are devices that are used to acquire data from the
environment surrounding it. Acquiring data helps to get certain information about the
environment under consideration. Typically, data acquisition devices interface to
various sensors that specify the phenomenon under consideration. Most data
acquisition systems obtain data from different kinds of transducers that produce
analog signals. In most applications, these signals need some processing. Therefore,
analog signals are converted into a digital form via analog to digital converter (ADC)
to be processed. Existing DAQs, can acquire single channel or multi-channel signals.
There are also open-source software packages providing all the necessary tools to
acquire data from different hardware equipment. These tools come from the scientific
community where complex experiment requires fast, flexible and adaptable software.
Those packages are usually custom fit but more general DAQ packages like
the Maximum Integrated Data Acquisition System can be easily tailored and is used in
several physics experiments worldwide.

Objective & Scope:-

• DAS must acquire the necessary data at correct speed and at correct time.
• It must monitor the complete plane operation to maintain on line and safe
operations.
• FPGA based data acquisition system for the process application is designed and
validated in real time. The proposed system is capable of acquiring of real time
data.

Methodology & Implementation Strategy:-

Here we have designed a FPGA based data acquisition system for a milk
pasteurization unit, where the temperature, pressure and level are to be monitored and
controlled. Design mainly involves the development of signal conditioning circuits for
the pressure, level and temperature sensors used in the application and programming
the FPGA using a hardware description language. FPGA utilized as a data acquisition
system is programmed to send the output signals for channel selection and start of
conversion for ADC. The Programming is done to fetch the data at the output of ADC
once an end of conversion is received from the ADC. The program will also output the
measured values on an LCD display in a user friendly mode by converting the
acquired data with the aid of proper mathematical calculations.
FPGA based data acquisition system is designed and integrated into an experimental
setup constructed around a prototype milk pasteurization unit, where the temperature,
pressure and level are to be monitored and controlled. Real time data is acquired by
the system and displayed on the LCD. As the validation is compared with the
reference data of the thermometer, side tube of the tank and an analog pressure gage
are here used as the reference devices.

Tools(software/hardware) required for Project:-

 Temperature sensor, Pressure sensor, Level sensor
 Voltage amplifier
 Filter
 ADC, DAC
 Xilinx
 FPGA
 Display
Outcome of Project:-
Data acquisition systems (DAQ) typically convert analog waveforms that represent
real world physical conditions into digital values for processing.
A DAQ includes:
• one or more sensors to convert physical attributes into electrical
signals.
• signal conditioning circuitry to transform sensor signals into a form
that can then be converted to digital values.
• analog-to-digital converters (ADC) to convert the conditioned sensor
signals to digital values.
FPGA based data acquisition system for the process application is designed and
validated in real time. The proposed system is capable of acquiring of real time data.
For the validation of the designed system of a simple process plant with three
parameters that are pressure, level and temperature is considered. The system acquired
the online data from different sensors and displayed them. Acquired data shows a
small measurement error which is due to the limitation of the number of output lines
in the ADC. If the ADC is replaced by an ADC of higher resolution then more
accuracy in the output can be achieved.
