Through my Graduate education experience, I have been prepared as a scholar-practitioner
informed by comprehensive and empirically-based theory and research. I am knowledgeable and informed of the latest student development theory, research, and programmatic advancements within the Higher Education field. I am able to apply, practice and utilize this knowledge within my professional career as an active student affairs practitioner. I am able to confidently facilitate, assess, evaluate and modify various models of student learning and development to varying student demographic groups. I am knowledgeable of the principles of individual and group behavior to effectively assess student needs and to successfully interact with a diverse student population. Informed by concepts and principles of student development and learning, I assisted a college First-Year Experience department in enhancing elements of a comprehensive FYE program which includes new student orientations, summer bridge programs, classroom presentations, welcome-week events, parent and family programming, first-year success workshops, a peer mentoring program, and learning communities. This is where I was able to establish the proven ability to develop and assess learning outcomes to evaluate the progress of students, gather and analyze data; to reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. My professional experience continues to allow me to assess programming by evaluating data from students, parents, faculty and advisors. Then produce quarterly and annual highlights and reports assessing department programming and student progression.
As a student affairs practitioner, I am committed to leading educational organizations that
endorse principles of justice, equity, and excellence for all learners. A major part of my role on campus works toward ensuring institutional policies, practices, facilities, structures and systems respect and represent the needs and concerns of all students. I work to advocate for all students with an emphasis on social justice values in institutional mission, goals and programs. I have the ability to communicate and work effectively with a broad range of diverse people, abilities and ethnic backgrounds. With a strong social conscious lens, I am able to identify systemic barriers to social justice and inclusion and assess my own and my department’s role in addressing such barriers. With this lens, I am able to design and develop programming and curriculum that are inclusive and promote social consciousness and challenge systems of oppression. This critical reflection further allows me to effectively determine student eligibility for financial or government, community and college resources, support and services. I am able to effectively assess student needs and provide advising and refer students for academic or social support with sensitivity to the needs, concerns, and cultural ba ckgrounds of a diverse college population.
