Devil gets the Power

By Todd Whelan

Darley Junior Football Club product Zak Butters is on his way to Port
Adelaide following his pick 12 selection in Thursday and Friday’s AFL
Draft at Marvel Stadium.
The highly touted 18-year old was chosen on the back of his excellent
form with the Western Jets and at representative level with Vic Metro in
the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships.
Butters played his entire 108 game junior career with the Devils dating
back to 2008 before graduating to the Seniors for a brief (yet unforgettable)
five game stint around his Western Jet commitments. Zak was a member
of the Devils 2017 Ballarat Football League Premiership team.
Darley Coach Heath Scotland was upbeat and excited for Zak and his
prospects ahead of the draft.
“Zak Butters is an elite footballer.” he said.
“He’s got all the attributes - skill, balance, versatility and wins his own
ball.”
“(Zak) is a player that always looks as though he has plenty of time and
space, is a good decision maker and excellent ball user.
“He’s a great sense of character, mentally tough and resilient.
“I’m confident he will flourish in a full-time AFL environment,”
Scotland said.
Darley Football Manager Craig Baker was aware of Butters’ prodigious
talent at an early age after the young gun won the Under 14 Ballarat
Football League Best and Fairest as a bottom age player. But it would
be an observation of another kind that would have Baker singing his
praises.
“Zak went up in my estimation this year when he would turn up and
be ‘the runner’ for his mates in the Darley Under 18s when the (Western)
Jets weren’t playing,” he said.
“When he had his shoulder surgery after the Metro Championships,
he would sit in the Darley coaches’ box and do the stats for the seniors,”
“Not many young men who were going to get drafted would do that,”
Baker said.
Zak will put his landscape gardening career on hold for now as he
embarks on every young footballer’s dream - to play in the AFL.

The Strawberry Farm Story

As a conventional strawberry farm, the Dellios family grew 25,000 plants per acre. But their irrigation system meant
water would pool on the ground and there was considerable risk of spoiled fruit and infection to the plants from soil-borne
pathogens, a case study by Jeanette Severs read.
Converting to growing the strawberry plants in a vertical system has done more than better utilise the land space. According
to Sam Dellios (jnr), the vertical system of growing has enabled them to plant 70,000 plants/acre.
“So, we’ve tripled productivity since we started 10 years ago,” he said.
The growing method also enabled them to rethink their marketing, implementing a pick-your-own option that is enhanced

“We installed the pipes at distances that enable people in wheelchairs and with limited mobility to move along the rows,
picking their own strawberries or at least being part of their families’ experience,” Mr Dellios (Jnr) said.
“That was an unexpected bonus from choosing the pipes.”

Walking 375 kilometres over ten days has raised a cancer

foundation $20,000.
Brett Williams began his trek from Wodonga and finished
at Bacchus Marsh on grand final day, Saturday 29 September,
raising money for the Cure Me Brain Cancer Foundation.
Mr Williams was inspired to do the walk for Faith Brewer,
herself on the cancer journey.
“We started raising money earlier this year at the junior
Bacchus Marsh and Darley football clubs match.
“’Grey for a Day’ raised $9000,” Mr Williams said.
“I was pleased to be able to present Faith and the Foundation
a cheque for $20,000, a total from the walk-a-thon and other
fundraisers.”
Mr Williams said the walk would not have been possible
without local support.
“So many not-for-profit groups got behind me on this one.
“The Lions club arranged all the donated accommodation;
Bacchus U-hire donated the support vehicle with All-Press
donating the sign writing on the car.”
There was outstanding support from many local businesses
with Mr Williams taking the opportunity to thank everyone
who supported this great cause.
“We live in a great community in Bacchus Marsh,” Mr
Williams said.
