 From figure 3.1.3, it is observed that the R2013 curriculum, PO1 (Engineering
Knowledge) contributes 95% of all the course outcomes of the program where as
PO12 (Life long learning) contributes 58% of all the course outcomes.
 The other program outcomes (PO2 to PO11) contribute ranging from 60% to 74% of
all the COs of the program.
 Similarly PSO1 contributes 74% of all the course outcomes of the program while
PSO2 contributes 62% of all the COs .
3.2 Attainment of Course Outcomes
3.2.1 Describe the assessment processes used to gather the data upon which the
evaluation of Course Outcome is based
Assessment tools are categorized into two methods to evaluate the attainment of course
outcomes:
1. Direct Methods 2. Indirect methods.
Direct methods display the student’s knowledge and skills from their performance in
the Internal Assessment-I, Internal Assessment-II, Internal Assessment-III, Model
Examination & University examination, seminars, and assignments etc. These methods
provide a sampling of what students know and/or can do and provide strong evidence of
student learning. Indirect methods such as course end survey are used for the attainment
processes and are described in table 3.2.1(a).

each semester. Retest(s) will be conducted for the non performing
students after each assessment of the semester to give an opportunity
to such students to improve their subject understanding.

Laboratory Assessment is mainly to assess student’s practical

knowledge with their designing capabilities. In the case of laboratory
Laboratory courses, the Internal Assessment marks will be based on Model

Examination Semester Examination is more focused on attainment of course
University outcomes and uses a descriptive examination.
4 Practical For practical courses, semester examination focuses on conduction of
Examination experiments and Viva -Voce

Students are encouraged to do mini projects in second year, design and

Mini fabrication projects in third year and they work as a team to contribute
project/Design to the course outcomes and program outcomes. The design and

discuss case study.
The Assignment marks in a theory paper will be based on 3
7. Assignment assignments of 20 marks each to assess the learning outcomes of the
course in every semester.
The Internal Assessment marks in case of project work for final year
students will be based on the evaluation in the 8th semester by a
committee consisting of the Head of the Department and three project
review members of the program with relevant specialization, one of
whom will be the project guide.
8. Project Work
Four reviews will be conducted for the project work and the project
review committee members will assess the performance of the students
during these reviews
Viva-voce examination for project work will be conducted by the
University appointed examiners for end semester examination.

Assessment tools: The process for assessment and attainment of COs are explained in table
3.2.1(b) and figure.3.2.1. The assessment tools are selected based on the nature of the courses
(eg. Theory, Lab and Project) and the performance of the students are evaluated for each
COs. The overall CO attainment has been calculated by considering 60% of CO attainment
obtained using internal assessment and 40% of CO attainment obtained using university
exam. The attainment of COs against the target is checked and the level of attainment and the
level of competency are discussed in the PAC, if the target is achieved. Otherwise, PAC
meeting is conducted to discuss the necessity of amendments in content delivery method,
content beyond syllabus and assessment method by considering the
course evaluation and instructor report in order to achieve the CO attainment against the
target.

3.3 Attainment of Program Outcomes and Program Specific Outcomes

3.3.1 Describe assessment tools and processes used for measuring the attainment of
each of the Program Outcomes and Program Specific Outcomes

(Describe the assessment tools and processes used to gather the data upon which the
evaluation of each of the Program Outcomes and Program Specific Outcomes is based
indicating the frequency with which these processes are carried out. Describe the assessment
processes that demonstrate the degree to which the Program Outcomes and Program Specific
Outcomes are attained and document the attainment levels)

Direct assessment and Indirect assessment are the two methods that are being used for
assessing the attainment of POs.

The course outcomes are mapped for each program outcome. The attainment of
course outcomes achieved are translated into program outcomes based on the CO-PO
Matrixes and course–PSO Matrixes.

 The Program Assessment Committee (PAC) meeting is conducted to fix the target for the
attainment of POs/PSOs based on the skill level.

 The attainment of POs / PSOs are calculated using two methods

i. Direct attainment
ii. Indirect attainment

 Direct PO/PSO attainment is calculated for all the courses in the program through
weighted average by considering the following inputs:
1. CO-PO mapping of courses
2. CO attainment level

 In indirect attainment method, the PO/PSO attainments are determined by the following
surveys:
1. Program Exit Survey
2. Alumni survey
3. Employer survey

 The cumulative PO/PSO attainment is calculated by considering 80% weightage for

direct attainment and 20% weightage for indirect attainment.

 The PAC members and HOD verify the PO/PSO attainment of the corresponding batch
at the end of 4th year.

The set target of PO/PSO will be revised after successful attainment of 3 consecutive
batches.

1. Direct Attainment:

This method of assessment is done to determine the extent to which the POs are
achieved by the students.

They are performed using the following methods:

 Through CO-PO mapping

 Activity Chart

Through CO-PO mapping: The inputs to this form of assessment are the results of IA1,
IA2, IA 3, model exam, University exam and assignments from which the outputs are
obtained and analysis were done. The attainment of COs are calculated and this analysis is
used in calculation of PO attainment through CO-PO mapping. The different components are
weighed based on the contribution that they render to the attainment of POs. The assessment
components are given in Table.3.3.1(a)

these activities which contribute to each POs, especially to POs 6-12 to enhance their
psychomotor skills. The activity chart mapping is given below in table 3.3.1(b).

the program exit survey, alumni survey and employer survey.

Program Exit Survey: Comments on the program is obtained from every final year student.
The feedback about individual POs are included in indirect assessment for PO attainment.

Process for PO/PSO attainment

The process for PO/PSO attainment is shown in figure. 3.3.1(a). Direct assessment
and indirect assessment tools are used for the PO/PSO attainment process. In direct
assessment process, CO-PO/PSO mapping for all the courses are formulated and CO
attainments are calculated using the process described in figure 3.3.1(a). The PO/PSO
attainments have been computed using CO-PO/PSO mapping. Further, PO/PSO attainment
through exit survey has been computed in the indirect assessment. The overall CO-PO
attainment has been calculated by considering 80% of COs attainment obtained in direct
assessment and 20% of COs attainment obtained in indirect assessment. The evaluated
PO/PSO attainment is verified against the target and in turn, level of attainment and level of
competency are set to higher level, if the target is achieved. Otherwise, PAC is conducted to
discuss about the remedial actions for achieving the target in the subsequent year. The
frequency of reviewing the assessment methods and tools for PO/PSO attainment process is
described in table 3.3.1(f).

3.3.2 Provide results of evaluation of each PO & PSO

Program shall set Program Outcome attainment levels for all POs & PSOs.
(The attainment levels by direct (student performance) and indirect (surveys) are to be
presented through Program level Course – PO & PSO matrix as indicated).

 The program level results of the CO-PO/PSO consolidated attainment using direct
(student performance) and indirect (surveys) assessment processes are calculated and
tabulated for 2012-16 batch and is shown in table 3.3.2(a).
 Similarly, results of CO-PO/PSO for the batches 2013-17 and 2014-18 are also
calculated and shown in tables 3.3.2(b) and 3.3.2(c).
 The graphical representation of the overall PO/PSO attainment for the program level
is shown in figures 3.3.2(a) to (c) for the above mentioned three batches.

Figure 3.3.2 (c). Overall PO/PSO attainment 2014-2018 Batch

COs attainment for all the courses is calculated for each semester. The consolidation of CO attainment is discussed in PAC meeting
through instructor reports. Similarly PO/PSO attainments are calculated for the outgoing batch of students in the respective year and the same is
discussed in MRM/DAC meetings for three batches to refine the threshold level. POs and PSOs attainment for the three batches of students are
shown in the Table 3.3.2.(d).
