This lesson plan is a feature of the unit plan which is accessible to students, parents, and the

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES
After a lecture and class discussion of cell structure and function, students will be able to
identify and explain the function of each cell organelle.
Students will complete a worksheet highlighting the importance of each part of the cell
attaining a minimum score of 75%.
Standard: MS-LS1-2: Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a
whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function.
o Indicator: Students will be able to explain how each organelle helps the cell
function effectively.

MOTIVATION
Students will watch this video as a quick introduction and motivation to the topic of cell structure

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
(including Key Questions)
What makes up a cell? Explain how organelles work together to make a functional single
unit.
What are the main differences between plant and animal cells? Explain the significance
of these differences.
INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
Class will begin by showing the students a YouTube video that quickly summarizes the
structure and function of cells and their organelles.
After this, lecture slides will be presented and students will fill out notes regarding the
function of each organelle.
Students will be placed in groups to review notes and answer key questions
collaboratively at the end of lecture.
Homework will be a worksheet highlighting the importance of specific organelles and the
difference between plant and animal cells.
Strategy: Students will be given fill-in-the-blank notes containing the necessary information
from the YouTube video and lecture slides.
Indicator: The students’ ability to successfully complete the homework on SurveyMonkey
which will determine whether or not the instructional strategy was effective for this student.
DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION
When placing students in groups, mix struggling students with those who are generally
good at understanding the content matter.
ASSESSMENT
Towards the end of class, students will be placed in groups to review their notes and
formulate answers to the key questions.
Each group will have one student present their answers to the key questions to the class.
Notes and key questions will be discussed collaboratively after each group has presented
their findings.
Homework will be reviewed next class.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Students will write a paragraph explaining differences between plant and animal cells
specifically referencing five organelles and their role within the cell.
When students are working in groups, walk from table to table to ensure that students are
on the right path to the correct answers. Provide guiding questions if students are
agreeing upon faulty information.
ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT
Students will complete an online SurveyMonkey outlining the difference between plant
and animal cells.
