3.0 Teat Specimen Sizes

The four point bend specimens for SSC testing were 130-135mrn long x 15 mm wide x
6.0rnm thick. The bore surface was machined flat and ground to a uniform finish; the
outer surface was machirped to reduce the specimen thickness to 8.0mm

The pitting specimens were 50mm long x 25mm wide and full wall thickness. All pitting
sample bore and outer surfaces were abraded with 12Qgrit paper.
4.0 Test Conditions

The SSC test conditions as defined by the d i n t for tmting were as follows:

The test solution was fully p r o d u d Saqqara water as defined in Table 2 beiow.

The gas environment was 0.4 bara H$5 and 27.6 bara C02 giving a total pressure of
28.0 bara. This gas mix and pressure were produced from a 1.43% H2S in C02 in a
cylinder provided and certified by Scott Specialty gases.

Duplicate tests on Bach weld were carried out at 900C and 132% and test duration was
720 hours

The pitting test conditions as definsd by the dient for testing were as follows:

The test solution was fully produced Saqqara water as M ~ n e d


in Table 2.

The gas environment was 0.08 bara H2S and 4.18 bara CO1 giving a total pressure of
4.24 bara. This gas mix and pressure were produced from a I.43% H2S in COz in a
cylinder provided and certifikd by Scott Specialty Gases.

Triplicate tests on each weld were carried out at 132OC and test duration was 720
hours.
8.0 Specimen Examination

The bend specimens were examined for cracking using a binocular microscope at up to
x40 magnification in the stressed condition (in the stressing jigs) and again in the
unstressed condition (after removal from the stressing jigs).

Any bend specimens that were found not to have cracked were further examined by
taking a cross-section longitudinally through the high stress portion of the beam. This
was mounted in a cold set resin and ground and polished to a I micron finish and
examined for evidence of cracking at up to x i 0 0 magnification.

The pitting specimens were examined using a binocular microscope at up to x40 for
evidence of corrosion, cleaned and reweighed. Pits greater than 0.Imm diameter were
to be recorded.

9.0 Results

No cracking was observed on any of the 4 point bend specimens; details of the results
are reported in Table 3.

Table 4 shows the results from the pitting test; no pitting was observed. Corrosion rates
were measured by weight loss as no pits were observed. The corrosion rates measured
by weight loss assume a uniform corrosion rate aver the entire surface of the test
coupons.

Figures 2 and 3 show examples of the SSC test specimens after testing; Figure 2 in the
stressing jig and Figure 3 after removal. Figure8 4 and 5 show the out surface of the
pitting sampks of the main and repair weld respectively before testing, Figures 6 and 7
show these after testing

10.0 Conclusions
Two samples of welded 12mm 25% Cr duplex stainless steel pipe were supplied
representing main and repair weld procedures. Four (4) four point bend specimens and
three (3) pitting specimens were machined from each sample.

The bent beam specimens were tested at 90% and 132% in fully produced Saqqara
water at a total pressure of 28 bar absolute comprising 0.4 bara HzS and 27.6 bara
C02.
The pitting samples were tested at 132OC in fdly produced Saqqara water at a total
pressure of 4.24 bar absolute amprising 0.06 bara H2S and 4.18 bara COz

No evidence of cracking was observed on any four point bend specimens after testing.

No evidence of pitting was observed on any of the outer or bore surfaces of the pitting
specimens after testing.

5.0 Four Point &end Specimens

These specimens were rectangular beams 130-135rnm x 15mm x 6.0mm finished to


600 grit. All specimens were marked with an STL test number, cleaned and degreased
with acetone prior to testing.

The specimens were all strain gauged in accordance with EFC 17 and mounted in a 4-
point bend jig.Figure 1 shows an example ofa strain gauged 4-point bend specimen in
a stressing jig. Both iongitudinal and transverse strains were monitored in order to
establish the applied drain. The specimens were deflected in the jigs, until the total
applifed strain was 5 0 0 0 ~this
~ ; equates to 100%of the actual yield stress (AYS).

The gauges were left in position and the strain monitored far up to one hour to detect
any relaxation. If relaxation occurred the specimens were further stressed to obtain the
desired value. No relaxation was detected in any of the stressed b a r n specimens. The
gauges were then removed and the specimens cleaned and disgreased with acetone
prior to testing.

6.0 Pifflng Specimens

These specimens were rectangular coupons 50mm x 25mm x full wall thickness ; the
oxide byer on the bore and outer surfaces was removed by abrading with grade 120
Sic paper. Prior to testing the coupons were stamped with an STL test number,
cleaned degreased, measured and weighed.

7.0 Test Procedure

The SSC tesk were c o n d u ~ in two Alloy C276 IOL autoclave test vessels. Each
autoclave contained four (4) four point bend specimens. The six (8) pitting tests were
conducted in a SL, Alloy C278, autoclave.

The SSC test specimens were degreased, placed in 10 litre autoclaves and immersed
in approximately 8 litres d &aerated test sobtion. The autoclaves were sealed and the
solution was deaerated further overnight using oxygen fiee nitrogen, before being
saturated with the test gas at 60%. The autoclaves were then heated to 90°C and
132% and pressuhed at the required tatat pressure of 28 bar absolute with the test
gas, allowance being made for the steam pressure at these temperatures. The test
duration was taken as 720 hours fnxn this point. Afler cornpietion of the test period, the
pH of each solution was recorded and the specimens removed from the autoclave for
examination.

The same procedure was used for the pitting teats at 132% except the total pressure of
the test gas was 4,24 bar absolute.
