CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The Internet is prevalent nowadays. The Internet is part of our daily life
because the internet makes people communicate with each others, have a data that
can people use when researching, a tool for educators, and a user-friendly and make
students life easy. There are a lot of applications that have used to the internet
and some of these applications are studied at subject empowerment and technology.
This subject contains a lot of examples on how to use the internet and applications
related to the internet. Example; Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft
Powerpoint to us for educators and also students. The infield of Social Media there
is a lot of applications to use. Example; Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter,
etc. that can use for communicating, sharing of thoughts, give Personal data,
The Internet becomes bigger and bigger, and also this application that can be
attractive and a lot of features that can be attractive to people especially to the
teenagers. But sadly although there is a lot of examples to give on how to use the
internet and this application correctly people are still addicted to the Internet.
That is why the excessive use of internet can be alarming.

Not only internet has many applications in our everyday life but also
qualifies special and unique features that have doubled its attraction (Hasanzadeh
et al., 2012). The internet has become a basic tool for trading, entertainment,
communication, as well as education in contemporary world. Today, communications
through computer and internet is a part of life reality. Nevertheless, despite the
high speed of information flow and potential educational value of the internet,
there are several attributes of the internet which may foster addictive behavior.
These attributes include easy and flexible access 24 hours a day; anonymity;
provision of free, diversified, and unlimited number of social networks without
geographical boundaries; greater control over one's self-presentation; and
provision of numerous opportunities to fulfill the need for belongingness as well
as to escape from emotional difficulties, problematic situations, and personal
hardships (Shek et al., 2008). On the contrary, it was suggested that students had
positive effect than negative effect of internet addiction in relation to their
academic performance (Suhail & Bargees, 2006; Safdaar et al., 2010; Young, 2006).
There are several factors that may contribute to internet addiction. These factors
are related to both ones social environment and psychological state (Hur, 2006).
In specific, internet addiction is often firstly observed in young age, during
which one is highly curious and wants to experiment with new technology. The
continuous increase in the number of single-parent families and the increasing
number of parents who work most hours of the day may be partly responsible for
childrens unsupervised overuse of the internet (Kuss et al., 2013b). The evolution
of online games and the escalation of social media try to compete with the
expansion of online learning tools. The relationship of students Internet usage
and academic performance is still really unclear, and so, it is very important to
have further study on this matter. In another study of Hassan Zadeh et al. (2010),
the relationship between excessive use of technology (internet addiction and SMS)
and educational and psychological situation of students showed there isnt a
significant relationship between the excessive use of the Internet and academic
achievement.
Based on the Operant Theory in psychology, learning is the most powerful small
units of accomplishment which are quickly reinforced (Suler, 1996). Learning theory
emphasizes the positive reinforcing effects of internet use which can induce
feelings of
