 Topic E: Trees and Forests
o GLO: Describe characteristics of trees and the interaction of trees with other living
things in the local environment.
o SLO: 9. Identify human actions that enhance or threaten the existence of forests.
o SLO: 10. Identify an issue regarding forest use, identify different perspectives on
that issue, and identify actions that might be taken.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Identify characteristics that can enhance or threaten the forest. (Applying)
2. Explain issues regarding the forest. (Evaluating)

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
 Have students brainstorm what we can do to enhance or endanger the
forest. 2 min

Body Time
Enhancing & 1. Talk as a class to determine what we can do to

2. Talk as a class to determine what the factors that
affect forests are. (Roads, logging, pests and 5 min
insects, littering, pollution, overuse by humans,

Dangers to a Forest. Remind students that some
things can be both an enhancement but also
threaten the forest. Students will then match the
term with the correct definition.

Who decides
what is protected 1) Continue with the PowerPoint and look at
different jobs that students will be given to do a
poster about.
2) Give students the background information about
the different jobs, so they will be able to quickly 7 min
complete their assignment.
3) Show picture of the different types of
enhancements that could be made by the specific
manager of the forest.

Task Card 1) Students will be put into groups and assigned a


Assignment specific job of what they are in charge of. The jobs
could be Fire, Insect and Disease Managers,
Recreation Managers, Watershed Managers,
Wilderness Managers, Industry Managers, and
Wildlife Managers. Students will be given their
handout and will read it as a group. Students will 40 min
then create a poster that would show the changes
that their group would like to make to enhance
the forest. Students will then justify in point form
why they are making those changes.

Conclusion Time
 Gallery Walk- This will give students a chance to show off their work.

Assessment
 Task Card Poster- Students will be applying their knowledge of identifying the
issues that affect forest and creating solutions for them depending on their task
card. (Learning objective 1) Students will have to justify their solutions therefore
explaining the issues regarding the forest. (Lesson objective 2)
