2: Annotating and Writing Summary and Reaction Papers

A. Task Prompt: Annotate, summarize, and write a reaction paper on the given article.
B. Requirements:
1. Photocopy of the article on communication ethics (ask copy from me)
2. Colored pens
3. Highlighter
4. Sticky notes
5. Worksheets
C. Activities:
1. Research on how to annotate.
2. From the title to the author to the last punctuation of the last sentence of the last
paragraph, READ.
3. While reading, do the following:
a. Highlight the TOPIC SENTENCE of the paragraph with one of the highlighter
colors. Somewhere on the page, indicate your legend for TOPIC SENTENCE with
the color used.
b. Highlight the THESIS STATEMENT of the paragraph with a different highlighter
color. Add up this marking to your legend.
c. At either side of the paragraph, write down keywords.
d. Should there be definitions or important quotes by experts flag them; one color
for definition, another for important quotes. Use keywords in your notes of
definitions. Important quotes may be copied verbatim with the citations – who
of what said it and when.
e. Think while reading. Interact with the author by asking questionsor agreeing
with the idea presented, or connecting a point to prior points in the paragraph.
Write your question or reaction vis-à-vis the statement.
4. By the worksheets, synthesize your notes per paragraph.
5. Using the annotated information, write a summary of each paragraph.
6. Finally, write a reaction paper on the article. Integrate the annotated information,
especially the ones that resulted from your inquiries. Elaborate on your realizations and
reflection.
7. Research on how to write good summary and reaction paper.
D. Title, Cover, and Packaging
Follow the standard format of writing the title and covering and packaging of your paper.
Compile your output in a black clear book in this order: Project Monitoring Sheet, this brief,
Worksheets, Summary of Summaries, Reaction Paper.
E. Deadline:
Submit your accomplished worksheets, summary of summaries, and a reaction paper on
Monday, October 8, 2018; 2:30 PM at the Languages and Literature Unit office.
