Banning the use of a technology that doesn't exist yet.
permalink embed save parent report reply
By then we had seen some limited use of the tech to CGI characters into movies whose
actors had died mid-production, so it wasnt entirely unknown or unforseen.
Once we got 'colorization' in the 80s, you could see the future where every pixel would

Shatner, 87, is about to publish a memoir. In one passage, he writes of having his

Do you all know Dweezil and Moon were totally against this? Ahmet pretty much split the
whole family apart over this and other estate things
permalink embed save parent report reply
Just out of curiousity do you know why they’re against it when the man himself seems to
have been into the idea?
permalink embed save parent report reply
Not OP, but I'm basically against anything Ahmet does. He is everything his dad hated
about the music industry and even sued his own brother, Dweezil Zappa, for using the
name Zappa.
permalink embed save parent report reply
Additionally, Frank would be very proud of Dweezil's hard work keeping the legacy
intact. Ahmet suing for Dweezil not to tour under his own name is beyond petty. As
a long term Zappa fan, I hate this hologram idea, and with the best will in the
world, Zappa's 'holographic tv' ambition, by his own admission, was pie in the sky
and an idea without any knowledge behind it.
Dweezil is a musician worthy of the name; Ahmet and the rest of the estate are
just cashgrabbers, like Hendrix and Marley's estates before them. I liked Ahmet; I
even have the album he and Dweez recorded, but if you cared about your dad's
legacy you'd be proud of Dweezil, not trying to shut him down.

I love that Dweezil changed his tour name from "Zappa Plays Zappa" to "Dweezil

pulled all that silly shit.

Good luck playing some of Frank Zappa's music without a solid background.
Even classically trained musicians are challenged by the most complex works.
In the end Frank preferred to record them on Synclavier so that he didn't have

I actually don't know how to feel about this because of my love for Frank and Dweezil. I
discovered Frank's work later in life, and missed on opportunities to see Dweezil's Zappa Plays
Zappa shows that recently ended.
But following Dweezil opened my eyes to the treachery of Gail and Ahmet, and their many
(eventually successful) attempts to run Dweezil out of his career.

12/13/2018 TIL Frank Zappa was a futurist who was enthusiastic for the possibility of holographic imagery. So much so that he recorded footage of …
Dweezil is enormously talented, there's so much of Frank in him. And he just wanted to pass
on Frank's music to a generation of music lovers who never got to witness Frank's music live.
But the Zappa estate led by Ahmet and Gail sued him because he was selling fucking merch
and they weren't getting a cut of it. After all the decades of hard work unsupported by the
family, fueled by the love of spreading music to the masses.
Now I see why they wanted Dweezil to stop so much. They couldn't have two Zappa tours at
once. Very shameless that Dweezil isn't included (not that he wants to be, I'm sure).
But I love Napoleon Murphy Brock, and it's been a dream of mine to see him perform Frank's
songs live. So I'm very confused as to whether I'd dare support this or not. My soul needs
more of this music and more of Frank in it, but my heart is screaming "no"
permalink embed save parent report reply
It’s cool how out there Frank was and that he didn’t even use drugs.
permalink embed save report reply
Yeah from what I've heard the whole "Zappa was Hardline against drugs" mostly came
from him forbidding people that worked with him on tour from using. It's not that he
necessarily cared what they did with themselves, it's more that he cared about the music
so much he didn't want any unnecessary variables messing it up, which is pretty fair, just
out of place in the music industry.

Smoking gives me the spins so I can't play immediately after smoking, but then

TLDR Gail died - the two youngest kids took over the Trust. They they strong armed
Dweezil into stopping doing Zappa plays Zappa, remove any image of Frank form anything,
not even sure if he could say Zappa(?) in the end.
Dweezil ended up doing a Cease and Desist tour that eventually got renamed Dweezil
plays whatever the fuck he wants tour.
He already paid his mother a ton of money to be able to play Franks music, and that was a
long standing agreed amount, and then his silbing basically wanted all of the money.

TLDR: Dweezil is all about the music and his father's legacy. Ahmet is all about the
money. Gail Zappa pulled a sleazy move gave Ahmet control before she died, even
though Dweezil is the one who actually can play the music and loves it. Ahmet wasn't

Project/Object is also quite good if they come to your area. They always have at least a

This is put on by Ahmet Zappa and the family estate. I encourage you all to read about what is
going on here. The only member of Zappa's family that can actually play his music is his son,
Dweezil, a stellar guitarist. He's been doing cover shows of his dad's music until his fucking
brother and sister sued for him to stop, claiming he was infringing on his dad's copyright. Dweezil
had to rename all his shit to still play.
Now the estate put this show together and got some old Zappa players, but no Dweezil. It's a
travesty that those fuckers can't make up, but as much as I'd love to see this I feel like Dweezil
got the raw end and I could not support what is essentially a money-grab. A huge bummer

certain guitar of Franks’s because they wanted to sell it for money. They have no damn
talent themselves and seem entitled to make money off of something they had no part in
creating. I’m sure Frank would be disgusted by it since he openly stated he wanted people
to play his music.

He also told Gail on his death bead to sell everything and leave California and the
music business.
D and Moon Unit at least were able to get on with Gail. but Diva and Ahmet have been
total pricks since she died and left them in charge of the trust

And he said, in a late interview that he doesn't care if anyone remembers him.
Definitely kills Gail's old arguement for preventing people from even playing a
Zappa song in public without permission.

“This mind-melting show we’re putting together celebrates the music, often surreal imagery
and humor synonymous with Frank. We will be pushing the limits of what anyone has seen
holographically on stage before in a live venue. Circumstances, objects, places and subject
matter from Frank’s songs and imagination will be brought to life for the first time on stage.
We are anthropomorphizing Frank’s music, so his own hand drawn illustrations, classic imagery
from his album artwork and characters from his songs can all interact and perform on stage.”
“The Bizarre World of Frank Zappa Hologram Tour” will also make extensive use of never-
before-seen 1974 footage of Zappa in his Los Angeles rehearsal space, which he turned into a
soundstage for an audience-less performance captured only by camera operators. That footage
remained in the Zappa vault for 44 years before it was unearthed for the hologram tour.
“My father and I actively discussed 3D and ‘holography’ and it was a concept he actively
engaged in. He actually devoted half a chapter of his The Real Frank Zappa Book to this
subject. This is a love letter and a journey celebrating the genius artistry of Frank Zappa. On a
personal note, I feel like I am finishing something my father started years ago,” Ahmet Zappa
added. “And let’s not forget, Frank himself will be rocking his fans, alongside his bandmates
like nobody’s business.”
That sounds absolutely incredible.

I wish I could find the link to the video where he talks about getting music via your phone and
cutting out labels completely, paying a monthly fee to have all music available through your
phone. He was way ahead of his time

Having seen FZ multiple times during his lifetime, dating back to the OG MOI, I have no desire to
see a holographic tour. I'm sure it will be great, and for those who never had the opportunity, go
see it. But there's little things like coming back for an encore, saying "Someone in the audience
had the audacity to request Caravan with a drum solo," then launching the band into an
impromptu rendition of Caravan, with said drum solo, that a completely scripted holographic show
won't ever be able to capture.

Last monday, I released an app I’ve worked on for a year(not counting sleepless nights) I am
incredibly proud of it, and hopefully it will bring us one step closer to what Zappa wanted! Check
out Holopipe! AR AND VR-app, letting users upload their own content, music, 3d, images and
more. Share it with the world...
My hope is to separate us from media in 2D, and let users stand in the center of the art, with it all
around them...
Creativity unleashed from the confines of the square! :D

I wonder if, in the hologram, one of his legs is shorter than the other and both his feets too long.

Isn't it a tomogram though? Afaik, the tech to make true holograms isn't feasible yet, requiring a
laser so powerful that it would blind anyone trying to view it.
