The debut of Austra comes at the end of a long line for the bands guru, vocalist and principle song writer Katie Stelmanis. Born of
a Southern Italian heritage, Katie spent much of her young life as a child opera star (in Canada). Pushing her small nimble body
almost to the limit on the Canadian youth-opera circuit had its stresses on her juvenile sanity as she travelled from Moose Jaw to
Sackville and back again, channeling the romance of Verdi and Puccini like a 75 year old man to her eventual exhaustion. She
came out the other end gifted forever with a stunning vocal range that she began to use for the forces of good, as a pop song-
writer.
She spent her post-opera teenage years as confused as the rest of us - obsessed with Nine Inch Nails and the Knife, and began
lending her talent to several burgeoning Toronto pop groups - playing guitar in the riot-girl inspired Galaxy by day, moonlighting in
the big band dramatics of The Bruce Peninsula, and slowly developing herself as a solo artists. Soon she was releasing records
under her own name and lending her voice to even more confusing choices, like Fucked Up's Polaris winning album "The
Chemistry of Common Life". Her mix of raw talent and bewildering confidence would land her 7" singles on Vice Records and a
split 7" with Fucked Up on Matador Records, solo tours of the UK and Europe, as well as direct support on the last CocoRosie US
tour, and a two night run with Tegan and Sara at New Yorks Town Hall.
Several high profile performances at 2010ss SWSX festival would see her discovered by blogs like Brooklyn Vegan, and several
journalists on the website Twitter.com, and would also lead to her signing a record deal with one of the seven major indie labels.
Soon after she would consolidate all these guises, styles and ambiguities into her latest project - Austra. Austra represents the
musical progression of over 10 years of performing as an artist, fleshed out by a full band. More settled and dominant than ever,
the Austra sound represents all of Katie's influences tightened into a shiny metal ball - pianos give way to keyboards as songs
build an pull, their urgent dark melodies arpeggiating and multiplying through an army of synthesizers, wrapping themselves
around Katie's astounding voice.
Currently Austra is in the studio with producer Damian Taylor (Bjork, The Prodigy, UNKLE) putting finishing touches on their debut
full length. In the mean time One Big Silence is proud to announce the band's first single, "The Beat and The Pulse" 12". As harsh
as it is beautiful, this track showcases Austra's platinum symmetry and twin power, like a beating heart dressed in black. The cold
nodding throb of a stainless steel beat all but yields to the red-blooded pulse of the voice that soars above, and finally falls apart
into rippling noise.

years now with his partner and label-mate Jenny Whiteley, but this is the first time we
