a) Most people are aware that a computer is a machine that can perform arithmetic
operations. But it is much more than just a fast arithmetic device. It is also a machine that
can choose, copy, move, compare, and perform other nonarithmetic operations on the
many alphabetic, numeric, and other symbols that humans use to represent things. The
computer manipulates these symbols in the desired way by following an “intellectual map”
called a program. A program, then, is a detailed set of humanly prepared instructions that
directs the computer to function in a specific way to produce a desired result. A computer
works one step at a time. It can add and substract numbers, compare letters to determine
alphabetic sequence, and move and copy numbers and letters. The time required for
computers to execute a basic operation- e.g. add varies from a few microseconds for the
smallest machines to 80 nanoseconds or less for the larger ones. Thus, the slowest
computers can perform hundreds of thousands of additions in a second while the largest
systems can complete many millions.
b) A woodcutter from the nearby village set out for to the neighbouring woods to cut down a
tree. When he had found a tree, just as he wanted, he lay down in the shade to get some
sleep as he was very tired of long walking. About half an hour later he awoke and rose to
his feet quickly. Before setting to work he laid his axe and tools aside. Then he raised his
eyes how tall the tree was. It was tall but rather thin. First he cut off a few big branches
and having done this he soon felled the tree itself. Then he set down to have lunch and
rest for a while before setting off. Going home he found the path running by the old castle,
founded in the 15th century, which had always aroused his curiosity, although he knew that
people lied to him when saying that the castle was haunted.

being angry at it, but later on we made jokes and started shaking with laughter. At last
we asked for some more drinks. Tom got angry with John who tried in vain to talk us

send a few letters. On sticking the stamps on the envelops he hurried on to the fixed
