IV. MULTIPLE DEFENSE
To help achieve our goals, it is our belief that we must also be a multiple defense. We must ~ive our players evexy chance to be successful. Each player must know that we will always have something in our package that is better than our opponent's. We will take advantage of the fact that our players are smarter and will work harder than any other team we will face. While each player will have different talent levels, it is our job as coaches to exploit those talents.
A. Concepts & Technique - We will teach our defense based on concepts and technique. Each position will have a number of techniques that will be mastered. This, in tum, will create a simplicitY within complexitY. For us, it will be simple by using a variety of techniques that will be interchangeable from fronts to coverages.
• Neuromuscular Patterning - Each of our techniques will be mastered through patterning and repetition. The only method to achieve peak performance is to pattern those techniques so they become automatic. This will help each player to develop and achieve total confidence. He will be able to play at a very high level - Hard and Smart. Remember, repetition is the mother of all learning. Our practices will be designed to aid this learning.

General Term Glossary
LOS: Line of scrimmage.
Gap: Area of attack by an offense, usually created in-between two offensive blockers. The goal of our defense is to control these gaps through assignment football. We will define gaps using letters.
Shade: Alignment taken by a defensive player. We will always play to half-the-man, thus a shade will be to the inside or outside eye, shoulder pad, etc. of the offensive player in front of you. We will define shades using numbers.
Flow: Term used to describe back action. Full flow refers to both backs moving in the same direction after the snap. Split flow refers to the backs moving in opposite directions after the snap. Flow will often determine blitz assignments such as tag and peel. Flow will also determine run responsibilities.
Fill: Run technique used by linebackers and safeties to attack the run with direct flow to them. A defensive player will "fill" his gap with flow to him.
Scrape: Technique used by inside linebackers to reposition themselves with run to the outside oftheir gap. The linebacker will use a lateral run to get outside and then attack the LOS at an angle to hold an inside-out relationship with the back.
Cutback: Technique used by linebackers and safeties to play to the backside of a running play. The cutback player must be able to fill the lane away from direct flow that the running back will use to cutback against the grain or flow of the play. Cutback will most often happen in the A or B gap.
Fold: Technique used by outside linebackers and rovers to play on the backside of a running play. Fold can be thought of as a long cutback assignment - a cutback that will cut all the way across the flow of the play back to the C or D gap. Fold players must be disciplined and slow down their pursuit until the running back is even with them, at which time they can take a fast pursuit angle.
Force: Technique used by any defensive player in which the player is responsible for containing the run play inside of him. Lead blockers should be attacked with the inside shoulder so as not to lose contain.
Secondary Contain: Technique most often used by comers and sometimes safeties in which the player will fit into the run stop scheme as needed. If any component of the run
Tulsa: Call given by the Willy linebacker in much the same situation as a Texas call. This call will be used in place of the Texas call if it is a pass down or situation. Tulsa=TacklelEnd twist (or EndfTackle based on game plan).

Crack and Replace: Technique used by defensive backs to play the run with a crackback block used by their receiver. The DB will attack the LOS once he realizes the crack block and will fit into the run game based on the assignment of the player being cracked.
Drop: Term used to describe the technique used by an underneath pass defender in zone coverage to get to an area on the field. Drops will change depending on the coverage scheme.
Odd: Defensive personnel group that uses 3 defensive linemen and 4 linebackers. This group will be used primarily in passing situations or against heavy pass tendency teams. We can run all of our Eagle calls with this group.
Eagle: Defensive personnel group that uses 4 defensive linemen and 3 linebackers. This is our base group that we will run most of the time.
Trooper: Defensive personnel group that uses a 4-3 scheme, but replaces one of the linebackers with a defensive back. Primarily used in passing situations or against passing teams, this group gives us some different coverage variations of man under/2 deep that we can't get in our other groups.
Friction: Term used to refer to a defensive lineman getting his hands onto an offensive lineman while playing his gap technique. This slows the offensive lineman from getting up to the backer level quickly to cut them off.
Trap Attack: Technique used by defensive lineman to take on pulling offensive linemen. The defensive lineman will wrong-shoulder the offensive lineman by coming underneath the blocker, spilling the play to the outside.
Texas: Call used by the Willy linebacker any time he is in a walk-out position and removes himself from the tackle box alignment. This will be in most 1 back sets. Texas tells the DE and or DT to rock down a gap to allow the Willy to play C gap. Maine can be used if Base front.
Front: Term used to describe the alignment of the defensive linemen and linebackers to a particular offensive formation. We will use many different front variations in our package.
Hide: Alignment by the Rover. The Hide places the Rover stacked behind his DE, allowing him to both force with flow to and play cutback with flow away. The Hide will put the Mike and Willy in a BOS alignment. Most often used with King or Con backs.
Even: Front in which the 3 technique tackle is on the strong side. Thus the front is shifted over to our strong side and towards the TE.
Base: Front in which the 3 technique tackle is on the weak side. Thus the front is shifted to our defense's weak side, away from the TE.
G: Technique/alignment used by a defensive tackle in which he aligns to the inside eye of the offensive guard. Player is responsible for the A gap. Also referred to as a 2i.
Base G 7: Front that is a Base look on the weak side, while the strong tackle is in a 2i and the strong end is in a 7, shading inside of the TE. Allows for extra coverage for ILBs, especially versus Ace sets.
Even 9: Even front with the strong side end in a 9 technique, shaded outside of the TE. This puts the Mike linebacker in C gap and the Willy plays to strong A. Most often accompanied by BOS and Hide calls. Most often run to a TE pair or wing look.
Switch: Front that is similar to Even 9 when looking at the defensive line alignments. The difference is that a LB will be placed in an up alignment on the TE, inside shade. Most often run in our Trooper group, the LB on the TE will be in man coverage and have C gap if tun shows.
BOS: Pronounced "Boss", this term refers to linebacker pre-snap alignment. The acronym stands for "Backers Over Strong" and will place the Mike linebacker in a 50 over his tackle and the Willy linebacker in a 10 shade on the center. Often accompanied by a Hide call from the Rover.
BOW: Stands for "Backers Over Weak" and is used to describe linebacker pre-snap alignment. The Willy backer will be in a 40 or a 50 and the Mike will be in a 10 shade on the center. Most often used with Queen or Pro back sets by the offense.
Defensive Front Keys
As a defense, we will use information such as Down & Distance, Formation, Game Time, and Offensive Personnel to give us tips as to what an offense may give us in certain situations. In short yardage situations, we will be thinking run and will give "Red" calls to the front - Stop the Run. In longer yardage situations, we will give "Green" calls up front to get us thinking pass and pass rush - Green = Go and get upfield. Linebacker alignments may be deeper in Green calls and DL stances will change. Green and Red calls will be given in the huddle or at LOS (based on OL stances).
This call will primarily be used in short yardage and goaline situations. Red = a strong tendency for run. DL will have a run stance - wider base with our butts lower. LBs should think run first and react to pass. May also be an appropriate call in many first down situations.
This call will primarily be used in passing situations and with blitz calls. With green calls. our DL will be thinking pass first and getting upfield, reacting to the draw and run. Pass rush stances will be assumed - Feet in a narrower base with our butts higher in the air (like a track stance in the blocks). LBs may deepen their alignment but must "clear the draw" before dropping to pass coverage.

We will huddle to make our defensive calls unless we are in a 2 minute situation. A huddle allows for refocus. unity, and communication. Missing a defensive call is not an excuse-everyone should be on the same page every play if we communicate with each other.
Football is not a silent game.
Our huddle will be situated as diagrammed below. The DT will set the huddle on the ball and the Mike will be our signal caller and should be the only person talking in the huddle when the call is to be given. FS will give the 0&0 in the huddle. The DL will bend over to allow the backline of DBs to see the Mike. Players will hold the hand of the player next to them _ we are one unit that is only as good as the guy next to you.

EAGLE COVERAGE DESCRIPTION
Our coverage system is divided into three categories.
1. Zone - Indicated by using one or two numbers. Cover 3, or Cover 53.
2. Combination Man/Zone - Indicated by using a word, Sara, Bracket. etc. .
3. Pressure - Indicated by a color. White, Silver, Gold etc. The one exception is Red, This is our Man Free coverage.
If a zone coverage is called using two digits. we will always play the first number to a Double Width set, that is a receiver on both sides of the formation. We will use the same concept with any of our coverages, "Sara Red" or "Bracket Apache". The coverage used will be a game plan situation.
In an effort to make all covers look similar, we will run the comers across with any motion or alignment in Twin or Trip sets, regardless of man or zone. The one exception to this rule would be if a "Field" call is given, this will keep the comers right and left.
1. "Cover 2" - A two deep, five under zone to a Twin Set. This will be a second digit call, 32 or 52.
2. "Cover 3" - A three deep, four under zone. We will play 3 to any set. We will "Bail" from 3 also.
3. "Cover 4" - A three deep, four under loaded zone. Played to Twin or Trip sets in anticipation of flood routes. Possible "Banjo" Technique to the TE side of the formation. Weak side defender will quickly drive to the three weak underneath zones.
4. "Cover 5". - A three deep, four under zone rotated to the single receiver side. Generally played to a double width set.
5. "Cover 6" - A three deep loaded zone similar to Cover 4. Cover 6 will be played to a TE trip or Strong back set

6. "Cover Red" - A man coverage with the Free Safety in a Post Technique. The underneath cover will be "Banjo" to the strong side, and "Fiddle to Curl" to the weak side. We may also indicate a receiver for the FS to Bracket by a Ietter, for example "Red X'7.
7. "Sara" - Our most used Eagle coverage. A combination man/zone package made up of component halves. (See "Sara" description)

Sara Term Glossary
Sara: This is a general term used to describe our man/zone coverage package. Sara is all encompassing and is made up of smaller component coverages such as Cora, Connie. Stick, etc. Sara is our base coverage family.
ASFC: This is an acronym for "Arrow, Swing, Force, Curl" and is an assignment in many of the Sara coverages. This technique usually falls to an outside linebacker or a safety. The defender with this responsibility will go through the progression with his
. clue to determine his reaction on the play.
Lock: Term used to describe man-to-man technique. The defender will play man in an off position on the receiver. Deptb=7 -10 yards, Alignment=Inside/Outside Eye.
Connie: Strong side coverage component of the Sara package. This call can be run anytime there is a TE-Flanker relationship. The comer is in man technique, the FS clues the TE vertical, the Sam and Mike are zone components with man clues.
Cora: Coverage component of the Sara package that can be used any time there is a slot look on a side of the offense's formation. The safety and corner in the Cora are in an area-man concept, both reading #2. The comer will jump any quick out route by #2, which will take the safety to man coverage on #1. The outside linebacker is ASFC on #3.
Stick: Weak-side coverage component ofthe Sara package. This is run only to a single receiver side and is accompanied by a Texas call to the DE. The safety on the stick will play man on the single receiver. The corner on the stick will jump inside of the receiver and play area 1 with a man clue on a back arrow or swing. Simulates a cover 2 look.
Stab: Sara coverage concept that can be run to any lor 2 receiver side (preferably 1 receiver). This is a cover 2 concept - the comer will jam and funnel the outside receiver to the safety and play flat -to-sink. The safety will playa deep half. The outside linebacker has a curl/vertical hold.
Sally: Sara coverage concept that is a "soft" cover 2 concept. Can be run to 1 or multiple receivers. The comer in this concept will playa soft flat, there is no hard jam as in Stab. The comer will read to the inside receivers for out cuts while staying on top of the outside receiver. The safety will clue the inside receivers vertical, and will widen only with an out cut by one of his clues. Linebackers will work off of receiver numbers - 1,2,3, etc. This coverage concept is also a coverage call that can be run in and of itself outside of Sara.
Exchange: Sara coverage concept that is played to 3xl sets. This concept will push a zone to the multiple receiver side and playa man principle on the backside. The 3
V2 Robber: Responsibility of the FS in Comrie. He will play man coverage on any vertical by #2 receiver (V2) and will become a curl robber if#2 disappears outside or inside, underneath the linebackers.
receiver side=Sally concept, the 1 receiver side=man, with variations. The Rover is a deep robber and the Mike/Willy will read the back for shallow cross duties.
Special: Sara coverage concept that is played to 3xl sets. This concept will push a zone to the 3 receiver side and will playa Stick principle to the backside. The Willy is the robber for the first crosser from the 3 receivers, the Mike will handle the second crosser. A quarters concept will be played to the 3 receiver side by the comer, FS and outside linebacker.
Load: Sara coverage concept that is played to 3x 1 sets. The Rover and FS will be on the same side in this concept and will play some form of the Sara package - Comrie, Cora. Stab, etc. The comer on the 3 receiver side will lock up on # 1. The backside is in man coverage.
3xl: Term used in description of any offensive set that has 3 receivers to one side of the formation and 1 receiver to the opposite side. 3xl sets will allow us to play Special, Exchange, and Load.
Area Inside: . The football field can be broken into areas: Area Outside (area I/flat) Area Inside (area 31H00k-Curl), etc. Area Inside is the Hook-Curl zone.
Area 2: Zone drop area most often occupied by an outside linebacker or Rover. Area 2 is the curl zone and often the Area 2 defender will also be a stretch defender for a vertical route.
Area 1: The flat zone. This is most often the responsibility of an outside linebacker or safety. Comers are area 1 defenders in Sally and Stab.
Buzz Flat: Technique used by an outside linebacker or safety to cover the flat zone. The Buzz Flat defender is responsible for area 1. This technique is most often used in our Sara Special scheme.
Vice: Technique used by a linebacker or safety that can bring help to an outside man defender or be used as a man technique. On a vice, the defender will run a banana route to the inside hip of the first receiver to the outside ofhirn. This will help to take away quick routes and will hold inside position between the QB and the receiver. A vice will
Apache: Coverage scheme in which the underneath defenders playa man-trail technique and the safety plays a half zone over the top of the man defenders. Can be run as a complete coverage scheme or on a half side in the Sara package.
Bracket: Coverage scheme in which 2 defenders will play an inside/outside combo coverage on a single receiver. Any in cuts by the receiver will be played by the inside defender and any out cuts will be played by the outside defender. Vertical routes will be squeezed by both defenders. Bracket will take place between two DBs or a DB and LB.

Arrow: Outside blitzer blitzes A gap. Can be run delayed or on the move, timing the snap.
Fire: Two blitzers off each edge of the formation. Accompanied by Gold coverage (cover 0, FS on TE). Versus two back formations, the Rover will blitz with the Sam. With one back, the Willy will take the Rover's blitz and the Rover will be in coverage. Outside blitzers have contain of QB.
Spark: One blitzer off the edge of the formation. Can be a backer or a safety. Usually occurs in our Bronco or goaline package.
Flame: Two blitzers off each edge of the formation. The blitz track is different from Fire - the Flame takes the outside blitzers flat down the LOS after crossing the LOS. These blitzers are not responsible for contain. Accompanied by Gold coverage or used as part of a Bear front package. Often used as a changeup to option teams.
Exit: Two blitzers off each edge of the formation. Similar to Flame in that the blitzers will pursue down the LOS, leaving the ends for QB contain.
Jet: Blitz track by an outside blitzerthat comes off the edge of the formation and puts the blitzer on QB contain. The defensive end with pressure the V of the neck of the OT to create a soft edge for the Jet.
Easy: Blitz path in which the outside blitzer off the edge lets the defensive end pursue up the field for contain while he dips underneath to take over the B gap blitz. Gives the illusion of outside pressure, thereby drawing the OT or back to the outside and leaving a lane underneath to the QB. Most effective if the outside blitzer initiates a Jet path and then ducks under the end.
Rock: Line movement by a defensive end. The end will move down one gap after the snap of the ball, exchanging gap responsibility with the ILB.
Flat-foot: Technique used by blitzer that allows the blitzer to read the play before running the blitz path. The play may deem that he comes out of his intended blitz path and redirects. A delayed blitz, most often used by an ILB when he has to cross the center's face.
Hug: Technique used by a defender in man coverage on a back in the backfield. The defender will run a path to the back after the snap, closing the distance down and continuing to the QB if the back's intentions are to block. This technique helps take

Sting: 6 man pressure that utilizes four defenders off the strong side of the formation. The Mike blitzes strong A, the Sam runs a fire track off the strong outside. Accompanied by Brown coverage which is similar to Gold.
Gap: Blitzer blitzes his gap. Most often associated with ILBs and accompanied by White coverage, which is a cover 0 with the FS/Sam combo on TE and back ..
Bang: Blitzers blitz the B gap. Most often associated with ILBs and accompanied by White coverage.
Cross: Blitzers will cross each other's blitz paths and switch blitz responsibilities. Can be run with Gap and Bang calls. Accompanied by White coverage.
Thunder: 6 man pressure accompanied by White coverage. The front is Base and both ILBs will blitz to the strong side, with the Mike hitting his gap and the Willy hitting strong A (flat-footed).
Storm: 6 man pressure accompanied by White coverage. The front is Even and both ILBs will blitz to the weak side, with the Willy hitting his gap and the Mike hitting weak side A (flat-footed). The opposite of Thunder.
Max: Mike blitzes the strong side A gap. Can be accompanied by numerous man and zone coverages.
Axe: Blitz path choice by the Willy in Cinco Black. Willy will hit the weak A gap, while the defensive tackle will cross the face of the OG to the B gap.
Cinco: 5 man pressure scheme in which the Willy is the blitzer. Willy has a choice of Rock, Easy, Exit, or Axe.
Swap: Pass drop by a defensive end associated with a blitz off the edge. The end win engage the OT and then drop to the hot route zone (curl/flat) to get in line of flight of the football. Run with Gold schemes.
Tiger: Pass drop by a defensive tackle associated with inside blitz pressure. The tackle will engage the OG or C and then drop to the hot route zone (hook/curl) to get in the line of flight of the football. Run with man or zone schemes.
Press: Man technique used by a defender in which the defender will play man coverage on a receiver from an "up" position, leaving no cushion and putting pressure on the release.
Hot route: Receiver route run to combat blitz pressure. The route is often a check at the LOS or just built into the offensive to attack where the defensive blitzer vacates.
Lock: Man technique used by a defender in which he will play man coverage on a receiver from an "off" position, giving the receiver a cushion. Defender must take leverage inside or outside of the receiver.
Convert: Man technique used by a defender that allows him to change his leverage on the receiver during the route. Most often run from an initial inside leverage, the defender will vice to the inside hip and then roll underneath the receiver to the outside hip.
Usually run with help from a safety in the middle of the field, we want to bait the receiver to the help and an inside route.
Up Calls: Huddle call that will place the linebacker/safety alignment up in gaps close to the LOS to give the illusion of pressure. The defenders will then back out into coverage. Most often accompanied by zone coverage.
4-Across: Alignment disguise given by the secondary. All four DBs will align at an even depth given no indication of a coverage shell. The DBs can either move to correct alignments during the cadence or after the hall is snapped. Used with man or zone coverage.
