in Dalston. Its creation is a result of first impression recorded
observations made whilst journeying through the hamlet. It
encapsulates everything from visual imagery to overheard
conversations.

Dalston is a district of East London, north east of Charing Cross. It

began as a hamlet within the parish of  Hackney, either side of
Dalston Lane. As the area urbanised, the term came to apply to
surrounding areas including  Kingsland  and  Shacklewell. This page
illustrates the interweaving of public and private spaces in the area
surrounding the site on which I hope to design my proposal.

Schedule of Accommodation

To get started with the design process, my first task was to develop
Work
a schedule of accomadation (that may be revised at a later date).
This involved establishing the minimum required space(s) that
would make up the mass of the building. For my artist, who tries to
seperate her work life from her personal life as much as possible, I
chose to represent these spaces with small blocks of 3D printed
plastic; where the edges of the block represent interior walls. The
dimensions of these blocks are completely arbitrary and will most
likely be revised during the refinement process. However their
sizes are relevant when looking at the pieces as a whole; the ratio/
relationship of one block to another.

My next task will be to arrange these blocks in several iterations

that will not only satisfy the schedule of accomadation and the
recquired conditions of each space but also provide insight as to
how the spaces may communicate with one another.

Movement Patterns

My artist research largely influenced my schedule of accomodation. In

order to design with my client in mind, I modelled Polly Morgan's daily
movement patterns and later used this to explore the interelationships
between spaces.

A breakthrough in inspiration that I had when approaching the design of

my building was comparing the building to my client's (Polly Morgan)
artwork. As she is a taxidermist, she spends much time dealing with
dead animals. This is what I envisioned for the design. A porous body
stripped away of all sentiment, slowly decaying. Just as a decomposing
carcass may have slits and tears where light is able to penetrate, my
design follows suite. And the inhabitants of the building, like the
inhabitants of a carcass, are mere parasites that find shelter in the dying
body.

After completing a few sketch models and getting a better grasp of my

building's overall design, I went back and made several changes to
improve the design. For example, I rotated the building by 90 degrees
and revised the programme to accommodate only one site - rather than
the original two - to save space and costs.
