PROJECT
DIGITAL LOGIC AND CIRCUIT DESIGN
TOPIC :- 0 TO 99 COUNTER CIRCUIT

INTODUCTION :
As may be referred the circuit employs the popular 555 IC to
genearte the pulse clocks. The pulse counting is done with the help
of SW1. A couple of CMOS ICs 4026B respond to these clocks and
become directly responsible for running the 7-segment display.
Since the last digit is restricted to 99, the first 4026 activates the
second, when it crosses from 9 to 0. (see the pin 10 of the first 4026
that enters the clock input of the second).
When the circuit is first powered, it may not start its count from a
zero, so a momentary reset activation becomes necessary and is
implemented using the switch (SW2). Pressing this switch the
account resets the circuit and starts the count from zero (00).

Working of Digital Counter Circuit

IC 4026 is basically a decade counter (10 States – counts 0

through 9). Also it has an inbuilt 7 segment display driver which
makes interfacing of 7 segment display easily.
4026 drives only common cathode seven segment displays. As the
name indicating a common cathode seven segment display has its
cathode shorted and grounded.

2
Pin 1 is the Clock input and Pin 2 is the clock inhibit which is used
for disabling the clock. It can be used to pause the counting when
desired.
Pin 15 (Master reset pin) helps to reset the counter.
Pin 2 and 15 are active high, so we are grounding them to enable
the counting process. They should be connected to Vcc for their
respective actions.
Pin 3 is display enable pin which enables the display.
Pin 5 is the carry output pin which generates a carry each time the
count exceeds 9. It is used for extending the counting limit by
connecting to the next IC’s clock pin.
You can use a 555 astable multivibrator as clock input.
For 2 digit display digital counter circuit 0 to 99 connect the carry
out of the first IC as the clock of 2nd IC as seen below. You can
increase the digits as much as you want by repeating the process
with more ICs and displays.

3
Resistor R1 is used as current limiting resistor. You can vary the
brightness of the display by varying the resistance value. But this
brightness will not uniform for each digit, Uniform brightness can
be attained by connecting individual resistors for each anode
segment.

APLLICATION :

A COUNTER has number of applications in digitl electronics as well as

in computer systems some of these applications are :

1. As by the name it can be used as a counting device

2. In our normal practical life, we may face circumstances where we

need a digital event counter in order to count certain events.
Here I will give you some examples: people counter circuit in an
auditorium, to count the number of products in a godown, to
calculate an athlete’s performance and above all, all the digital
clocks are basically counter circuits which generates an one
second clock.

Apparatus required :
1. Battery
2. Connecting Wires
3. Some Resistors ex – 270 k ,330 k,10 k
4. Push switches
5. Some Capacitors ex- 0.1 micro farad
6. Ic ‘s – 4026 –2
7. A 555 timer ic
8. Bread board
9. 2 seven segment display
10. A 9 to 5 regulator ( 7085 )

 Cost of this project is approx. 250 to 300 rupees

CONCLUSION
ALL The circuit setup is very easy to implement if you take precautions
wisely and make the connections corectly and the read the components
data sheet and specification nicely

After implementnig these types of circuits one can easily get the
practical knowledge of digtal electronics its ideas and its wide varaity
application of digital electronics

This will also help in the learning of internal structure of computers as

these ic’s and circuits are basic blocks of a computer system
