nd certainly We created man of an extract of clay, Then We made him a small seed in a firm resting-place, Then We made the seed a clot, then We made the clot a lump of flesh, then We made (in) the lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, then We caused it to grow into another creation, so blessed be Allah, the best of the creators. Then after that you will most surely die. Then surely on the day of resurrection you shall be raised. “Whosoever visits a sick person, an angel calls Word of Wisdom from Heaven: “Be happy in the world and happy be your walking; and take your habitation in Paradise.” ” Live amongst people in such a manner that if you die they weep over you and if you are alive they crave for your company.

IMAM ALI (AS)

Islam & Science

At the age of 11, Imam Sadiq (AS) refuted the theory that the sun, moon and the planets rotated around the earth. He said that the sun, during its course round the earth, passes through the 12 constellations in one year and remains in each constellation for 30 days, so why does it then disappear from sight during the night. It should remain visible in each constellation for 30 days.

Imam Al-Sadiq (AS) and Rotation of the Earth round the Sun

Inside . . .

Imam Husayn had shown by his acts as well as his various discourses during the seven days of Muharram at Karbala, that this conflict was much more universal in nature, and that he knew that he was going to live for ever through his martyrdom. Yazeed died as uselessly as he lived; only three years after the battle of Karbala took place. While trying to race a baboon, he fell from his horse and broke his neck. As history has recorded, those who were apparent victors at Karbala have disappeared without trace. While the plain of Karbala was transformed from a deserted piece of barren land into a bustling town, of which, the central monument is Imam Husayn’s glorious tomb. Millions of people visit the tomb in reverence, all the year round, day and night. Imam Husayn’s martyrdom is observed with solemn deference all over the world,[...]

Terrorists have created an image far from the reality of Islam. Killing the innocent is strictly forbidden in Islam. Almighty Allah has stated in the Holy Quran, “And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except for the requirements of justice; this He has enjoined you with that you may understand…” [6:151] “… whoever slays a soul, unless it be for manslaughter or for mischief in the land, it is as though he slew all men; and whoever keeps it alive, it is as though he kept alive all men; and certainly our messengers came to them with clear arguments, but even after that many of them certainly act extravagantly in the land.” [5:32] Islam is a religion of peace. unfortunately, this peaceful religion is being portrayed as a source of evil and immorality. The bombings, terrorist attacks, and killing that are happening around are a great crime against humanity, Islam, and the teachings of its prophet (s). Acts such as these have no justification. Islam has nothing to do with the actions of ruthless, cruel individuals, who kill others for personal, political motives.

Islam and Terrorism

There needs to be more stress on dialogue between different civilizations. In addition, there must be more emphasis on the promoting of non-violence, peace, equality and world harmony. In particular the promotion of respect for others, for no race is superior to another. When the Prophet Muhammed (P) was asked: “What is religion?” he famously replied: “Religion is but love.” In addition, Imam Ali (p) said: “People are of two kinds; either your brother in faith, or your equal in creation.” I also think it is necessary for us to academically research the roots and causes of terrorism in order to tackle the problem, because one can not solve a problem unless he understands the causes of it. Addressing his son Ali in Karbala, Imam Husayn (AS) said, “O’ my son be afraid of oppressing the one who has no defender except God”

Ptolemy theory said that the sun has two movements. one of its movements is that it crosses the sign of the zodiac and goes round the earth in one year and the other movement is that it goes round the earth in one night and one day, as a result of which we see it rise in the east and set in the west. Aristotle was a great thinker and philosopher. His books, Arganan and Physics, are the most precious literary treasures of mankind, but his theory that the earth is stationary and the sun and stars rotate around it, delayed the progress of the science of Astronomy and kept mankind in the darkness of ignorance for 1800 years. The Imam remarked that those two movements were not compatible. When the sun had to pass through the sign of the zodiac in one year and stay in each constellation for 30 days how could it change its course and go round the earth in 24 hours? He also announced that the earth rotated around its own axis. The great scholar Poincare who lived in the 20th century made fun of this theory. The rotation of the earth on its own axis could be proved by observation only. When astronauts landed on the surface of the moon, and directed their telescope towards the earth they observed that it was rotating slowly on its axis. Some people might say that it was only by guesswork that Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (AS) said that the earth rotates on its own axis. Sometimes it happens that guesswork proves to be correct. But the question arises as to why no one else had guessed that for such a long time. This proves that he knew the laws of astrophysics which enabled him to make that discovery. If he had not known those laws, it would have been impossible for him to discover the rotation of the earth on its axis. This discovery could not have been accidental. one must know the cause to know its effect. Tragically, for reasons stated above, the real credit of discovery of the movement of the earth round the sun was given to Copernicus who was an astronomer and mathematician, in the 15th Century. The theory of the earth rotation around its own axis went to Galileo who discovered the telescope.

Ashura

Muharram is one of the four months declared sacred by Allah in the Holy Quran. It also marks a new year in the Islamic calendar. While it is celebrated by some Muslim countries with all sorts of feasts, joy and laughter, there are those who receive it by commemorating the martyrdom of the Holy Prophet’s (P) grandchild Imam Husayn (AS) with grief, tears and sorrow. on the 10th Muharram 61 Hijrah, Imam Husayn Bin Ali (AS) was martyred in Karbala, Iraq, along with 72 of his friends and family. They were martyred with such cruelty that those responsible for committing these vicious acts cannot be called Muslims. Such was the loyalty of those who claim to be Caliphates and Muslims but who were more keen to received worldly rewards as promised by Yazid, son of Muawiyah (may Allah curse him eternally). Imam Husayn (AS) was born on the 3rd of Shaaban 4 Hijrah in Medina. When the news of his birth reached the Holy Prophet (P), Prophet Muhammed (P) came to the house of Imam Ali (AS) and Sayyidah Fatimah Al-Zahra (as) where he gave blessings to the child. On the 7th day of his birth, he was named Al-Husayn which means “the junior of Al-Hasan”, his elder brother. The angel of revelation, Gabriel, descended from the heavens to congratulate the Holy Prophet Muhammed on behalf of Allah and himself and to inform him that the newborn child would be martyred by his own nation in a hot desert called Karbala in bloodshed and thirst, the Holy Prophet (saw) wept profusely and said, “By Allah, those who kill Al-Husayn will never get my intercession on the Day of Judgment!” The Holy Prophet (P), Imam Husayn’s grandfather, was the first person to cry for Imam Husayn’s foretold martyrdom. He loved Imam Husayn (as) dearly and took him as his own son. The Holy Prophet (P) said, “Husayn is of me and I am of Husayn. oh Allah! Be pleased with whoever pleases Al-Husayn.” Imam Husayn (AS) was brought up under the care of his Holy Grandfather (saw), his father, mother and brother. With such holistic personalities in the house, Imam Husayn (as) acquired all the qualities of an Imam (AS) simply by being brought up in the Holy Prophet’s (saw) family.

He attained perfection at its highest level in all aspects; courage, knowledge, piety, ethics etc. When his elder brother, Imam Hasan (AS), was martyred on 28 Safar 50 Hijrah by his own wife Ju’da, it was Imam Husayn (AS) with his grandmother, Fatima daughter of Asad, who undertook the burial of his brother’s body. By Allah’s command, Imam Husayn (AS) was appointed to take the full responsibility of the Imamate. The nation suffered a lot of injustice during the umayyad’s era. For example, taxes were imposed but the money was kept for Yazid and he did anything he wished, abandoning the welfare of the people abandoned. There is a need to free the Muslim economy and put it into proper use. Imam Husayn (AS) received hundreds of letters from the people of Kufa, pleading him to come and be their caliph. The fact that the Imam knew about the untruthfulness and unfaithfulness of the Kufis toward his father and brother, he sent his cousin ‘Muslim bin Aqeel” to observe the Kufa affair. Many Kufis pledged allegiance to Muslim bin Aqeel. If necessary, Muslim bin Aqeel was to invite Imam Husayn (as); Aqeel did so immediately. It was not long before Aqeel was martyred. Caliphate is a position chosen by Allah for Imams. It has to be made clear that the Imam was not fighting for power, but rather fulfill the will of the Holy Prophet (P) who has told him of his destiny. Imam Husayn (AS) described his aim about this mission was to disgrace Yazid’s regime and to uphold and put into practice the 7th and 8th branches of religion, (Amer bil Maroof and Nahi anil munkir), to order the correct and right and to stop and refrain from the evils and to stand up against the brutality and cruelty. Imam Husayn (AS) was responsible for the nation as he should be the first one to protect and defend it. on the tenth day of Muharram of the year 61 Hijrah, the Imam lined up before the enemy with his small band of followers, less than ninety persons consisting of forty of his companions, thirty some members of the army of the enemy that joined him during the night and day of war, and his family of children, brothers, nephews, nieces and cousins. That day they fought from morning until their final breath, and the Imam, the young ones and the companions were all martyred. Among those killed were two children of Imam Hassan, who were only thirteen and eleven years old; and a five-year-old child and a suckling baby of Imam Husayn. The army of the enemy, after ending the war, stripped the body of the Imam and burned his tents. To what point was this Yazid evil? They decapitated the bodies of the martyrs, denuded them and threw them to the ground without burial. The youngest martyr of Karbala was the sixmonth old infant of Imam Husayn, Ali Asghar who was killed by the army of Yazid by arrow while Imam Husayn was asking for water for him.

[...]every year during the first ten days of the month of Muharram, by his followers. Public gatherings are held, speeches are made in which the story of Karbala is retold in touching tones and prayers are made to the effect that may the almighty Allah grant the same courage and strength to his followers in their hour of trial as he did to Imam Husayn. At the end of these gatherings, the audience stand up and pay homage to Husayn and his companions in the following formal terms: I wish I was with you ( at Karbala ) and would therefore, have attained the same exalted station ( as you did ). Although, the observance of commemoration of Imam Husayn in Muharram has only recently started in the Western countries, they are a part of the Muslim culture in India, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and other eastern countries. New centers have been established in Canada, the uSA, and in many european countries where these practices of Muharram are done with all the elaborate details. The main element of these commemorative practices is the message of Imam Husayn, which is also the message of the Prophet of Islam, which is Islam in its purest form. That is as follows: 1. Islam is a universal religion 2. Islam is the religion of human rights and common sense 3. Islam upholds the basic right of every person to hold his/her own views 4. Islam stands for the poor, the downtrodden and the weak 5. Islam teaches to side with the oppressed and fight the oppressor. 6. Islam appeals to human conscience and consciousness to see the right from wrong 7. Islam appeals to man through his own awareness and power to distinguish between good and evil. 8. Islam does not impose the law by brute force. Karbala is a gift to humanity. The story of Karbala teaches us the following lessons: 1. It teaches the parents how to love and cherish their children however, when the time of sacrifice, the parent comes is in the forefront to sacrifice his/her child for the right cause. 2. It teaches men and women how a husband should behave with her wife, and vise-versa. Even when the family is threatened for life, property, and honour, how sensible people keep their heads and act according to Allah’s and nature’s laws.

3. It teaches the faithful that your beliefs and your convictions are the most important thing in the world. 4. It teaches the faithful to find the right Imam and follow him. 5. It teaches the faithful that helplessness and lack of power in this world do not mean a thing as long as one has chosen the right path and he/she is convinced that he/she is on the side of the truth.

One example from our times will suffice to explain this point. A few days ago, 25 young girls were burnt to death inside a school building in Saudi Arabia. When the fire started in the building, children ran to the gate to save themselves from getting burnt. The religious police of Saudi Arabia would not let them get out of the building because they did not have the proper Hijab on!!!!!! When tents were burning in Karbala, Lady Zainab, Imam Husayn’s sister approached her 24 year old nephew, Imam Ali Zain Al-Abideen and asked him: “Nephew, you are our Imam now, what is your command about us, shall we all get burnt to death or save our lives and go out of the tents without our Hijab?” Imam Ali Zain Al-Abideen replied: “Aunt, saving your life is obligatory, go out and save yourselves and the children.” The head coverings had already been looted from the heads of the ladies by the enemy soldiers. However, Lady Zainab is the granddaughter of the Prophet of Islam; she is the daughter of Imam Ali and Lady Fatima. She did not need anyone else to tell her what the religious law was. She had grown up with Islam. By this one act, Lady Zainab showed to the world the importance of the Imam of the time. At the same time, Imam Ali Zain Al-Abideen’s reply showed that Islamic law is what it is, but common sense always prevails.

Sayings

Imam Husayn (AS) Said:

1. O Allah what did he finds who lost you, and what did he loose who found you. 2. Imam Husayn (A.S.) said to a man who backbitten another before him. o you, stop backbiting, for it is the daily meal of the dogs of Hell. 3. Before Imam Husayn (A.S.), a man said that favors are worthless if they are done to other than its people. The Imam Husayn (A.S.) commented: No, this is in accurate. Favors should be like the heavy rain that covers the pious and the sinful. 4. Some people worshipped Allah for the purpose of gaining His gifts. This is the worship of the merchants. Some worshipped Him for the purpose of avoiding His punishment. This is the worship of the slaves. Some worshipped Him as showing gratitude to Him. This is the worship of the genuine ones. It is the best worship. 5. There are seventy advantages for the greeting. Sixty-nine is given to the one who greets first and one is given to the one who responds to the greeting. 6. Imam Husayn (A.S.) said to a man who begged him: Asking for financial help is acceptable only in big loss, extreme poverty, or horrible guarantee. The man said: Because of one of these I came. Hence, the Imam Husayn (A.S.) ordered to be given one hundred dinars.

Poetry
Husayn you are, light of my eyes, And with your name, I start to rise, And then I start to shed a tear, For what occurred Husayn my dear. Husayn before, I go to sleep, I start to cry, I start to weep, And then I face your holy shrine, So you’ll forgive me of my crime.

I am ready, to go through pain, As long as I am with Husayn, To be with you is all I want, Husayn Husayn, I’ll always chant. Husayn I am, now so proud, To shout your name, to shout aloud, Husayn your name, is in my heart, From it your name, shall not depart.
