GEC320 ASSIGNMENT

Attempt all

1. A ball at 1200 K is allowed to cool down in air at an ambient temperature of 300 K.

Assuming heat is lost only due to radiation, the differential equation for the temperature of the
ball is given by

d
dt
 
 2.2067 10 12  4  81 108 ,  0   1200 K
where  is in K and t in seconds. Find the temperature at t  480 seconds using Runge-Kutta
4th order method. Assume a step size of h  240 seconds.

2. The perimeter of an ellipse with parametric equations y = 2sinθ, is 2√x ∫ (13 −

5cos2θ) dθ. Evaluate this integral using Simpson's rule with 6 intervals.

3. If + - = 0 with the boundary conditions U(2) = 0.008 and U(6.5) = 0.003,

find u as a function of r using 4 equidistance nodes. Apply forward finite difference.

4. A damped oscillation of a system is given by the equation: y = −7.4e . sin3t.

Determine the value of t near to 4.2 (using Newton-Raphson method), correct to 3
significant figures, when the magnitude y of the oscillation is zero.
