........Most electric related accidents happen in and around the home. We can
take a few simple precautions in our everyday activities which can prevent
most of these accidents from ever occurring. Below given precautions and
tips on electric safety will assist you in making your home a safer place.

Safety for Residential Consumers.

Safety for Industrial Consumers.
Safety for Electrical Contractors.
Safety for Children.
Precautions for Storm Emergencies.
Protection at Home in case of Fire.
Precautions to avoid common Accidents.

Safety for Residential Consumers :

Engage Licensed / Government approved wireman / electricians for all repairs

/ maintenance of electrical wiring, plugs, switch boards.
Carry out all electrical works after switching off the electric supply.
Change immediately old and damaged wiring where insulation has been
damaged.
Avoid joints in the wiring. All necessary joints should have proper tapes /
insulation.

Loose wiring results in sparking. Ensure that wires are tightened at both ends.

All on / off switches of electrical appliances should have easy access.

Remove obstructions if any in their way.

Select appropriate size of fuse wire / MCBs for main fuse and circuit fuse.

In case of fire from electrical circuits, switch off the supply immediately and
use sand, carbon dioxide or dry powder extinguishers. Do not use water.
Effective earthing should be provided to all electrical appliances. Install Earth
Leakage Circuit Breakers on the electric line will prevent shocks. Earthing
should not be done on water / steam pipes / iron rods of the slab.

Install an indicator light for an electric heater and an auto temperature control
switch.
Use properly earthed 3 pin plugs for all electrical appliances. Electrical
appliances should be kept away from damp and hot surfaces. Dim or
flickering lights, sparks, buzzing sound from electrical appliances are signs of
potential hazards. contact qualified electrician immediately.
Install switches and and plugs at a height out of reach of children.
Use rubber mats near fridge, heaters, electric cooking range, etc.

Main switchboard and meter should be safe and protected from rain, wind,
dust. Meter Box should preferably be wooden and at height of 1.5 meters.

Keep away from overhead lines and do not touch broken wires.
Never go near any place where 'danger' caution board is placed.
Do not tamper with electric meters, tampering may land you in jail.
Do not use broken fittings; replace broken switches / fittings immediately.
Never use Mettalic wire near electric lines for hanging wet clothes.
Do not carry out construction in proximity of electric lines.
Never touch switches / plugs with wet hands.
Do not dry clothes on electric wires.
Do not insert more than one plug in a socket. While removing pin from plug
socket, pull the plug top and not the wire.

Safety for Industrial Consumers :

Any abnormal noise / spark or smoke noticed in the machinery / equipments

should be attended immediately.
Always keep the fuse box, main switch, control box, panel etc. properly locked
and without obstacles.
Electric equipments / wires to be used near highly inflammable chemicals
should be of ISI mark and flameproof and proper earthing to these should be
ensured.
Strictly adhere to all electrical rules and regulations.
Please provide proper size of wiring for each machinery to avoid voltage drop
and insulation melting.
Use armoured cable for motor winding.
Provide proper earthing for the installations and motor casings.
Never touch any electric switch with wet hands or while standing on wet /
damp ground or wet electric equipments / installations.
Never touch wires where insulation is worn out.

Do not touch a person receiving electric shocks. Switch off the supply and
then remove him with either cloth, paper or wood. Keep the person warm and
give him artificial respiration and immediately consult a doctor.

Safety for Electrical Contractors:

Electric supply should not be given from one Distribution Board to another.

After completing electric wiring, insulation resistance should be measured

with the help of megger and reported in the Test Report.
Electric supply should not be connected till satisfactory Testing results are
achieved.
All switches should be connected to circuit phase wire.
Select appropriate size of cables, wires or flexible wires.

Use wires compatible with the equipment rating, however, not less 4mm 2.

Insulation should be provided between live wires and wires used for electrical
appliances.
Do not wear metallic belts, chain, buttons, ornaments or keep metallic tools,
knife etc. in your pockets.
Never touch electric pole, climb the tower or try to remove foreign objects
from overhead lines.
Do not paste / attach advertisement boards, banners, TV channel wires, etc.
to electric poles / street pillars.

For temporary connections, always use appropriate and continuous wires. Do

not allow the wires lying on the floor. Place them at a suitable safe height.

Safety for Children :

Test children’s bath water by moving your hand through it for several seconds.
If it feels even a little hot, it will be too hot for a child. Add cold water, or allow
to cool and test with your other hand.
Never leave a child unattended in the tub.
Never use wire, tinsel or any other metal in your kite. Fishing line often
contains wire and shouldn’t be used. Fly your kite or model plane in open
areas, far from power lines. Don’t fly a kite in bad weather.
Take a tour of your house with your family and check out potentially
hazardous areas.
Don’t climb power poles, transmission towers, or trees with wires near them.
Don’t throw rocks or other objects at equipment on the poles.
Do not touch electric meters, or other power equipment behind buildings or
stores. Stay away from railroad tracks, wire fences, and boats that may be
using electricity you don’t know about.
Stay clear of anything that says “High Voltage."

Precautions for Storm Emergencies :

Keep a flashlight handy, along with enough fresh batteries, for each member
of your family so no one will be left in the dark if the lights go out.

Standby generators require special considerations before being connected

and should be installed only by licensed electricians. Improperly connected
generators can present severe hazards to your repair crews working on
nearby electric lines.

Never touch or go near, or let anyone else go near, any fallen wires, even if
you think they are safe. If you are in a car that comes in contact with any
downed wires, stay in the car until help comes. If possible, drive clear of the
wires. If a fire or other emergency requires that you leave the car, jump out so
that no part of you touches the ground and the car at the same time.

If you’re caught in a lightning storm while swimming, get out of the water and
stay away from trees. Go indoors and keep clear of the windows.

Protection at Home in case of Fire :

Keep emergency numbers for police and fire departments near your phone.

Make sure that at least one smoke detector is placed on every floor of your
home. Locate detectors on the ceiling away from air vents and near
bedrooms. Test your detector every few months to ensure it’s working.

Develop an emergency exit plan for your home in case of a fire. Practice the
plan to make sure everyone can escape quickly and safely.

Keep your chimney and vent piping clean. Have them inspected regularly and
cleaned by a professional when necessary.
Don’t smoke in bed and keep ash-trays and other smoking materials away
from beds and blankets.
Store flammable liquids such as paints, solvents and gasoline away from
heating sources.

Precautions to avoid Common Accidents :

Stairways should be well lighted. Steps, coverings and handrails should be

sturdy and secure.
Keep ladders in good shape. Check for loose rungs or frayed ropes on
extension ladders. Make sure the ladder is on level ground before climbing
and never stand on the top step.
Make sure clotheslines are above head level. Keep your yard clear of garden
tools and litter. Inspect outdoor play equipment and furniture to ensure that it
is secure and safe.
Don’t stand on chairs, boxes, or other makeshift items to get to hard-to-reach
places. Use a sturdy stepstool that has a handrail for support.
Equip all bathtubs and showers with nonskid mats or strips to help prevent
falls. Install grab bars to assist you getting in and out of tubs or showers. Do
not use towel bars as grab bars.
Keep the garage door open if running the car engine inside. Be sure to clear
snow away from tail pipes and parking lights and, always look before backing
up.
Wear eye protection such as safety goggles or shields when operating power
tools. Always disconnect and leave these tools in a locked position.

Store sharp knives in a special compartment, tray or utensil block, out of the
reach of children.
If there are swimming pools in your neighborhood, don’t rely on fencing to
keep young children safe from drowning accidents. The only real protection is
direct adult supervision.
