Passages) 07/04/10 Today as we all know is the 4th of July, which is Independence Day here in the USA. 234 years ago a group of 56 men signed what they called “The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America.”, it was what we now call the Declaration of Independence. As stated in that declaration these men believe it was their “right” and “duty” to “throw off” a repressive government. They concluded their declaration with the following. “We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. — And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.” Thus began this nation we call the Untied States of America. Since that time over 1 million Americans have died defending that freedom. Over a million more were wounded for the same cause. As American we cherish our freedom. We thing so highly of it, that many are willing to died for it. May we realize that freedom that we enjoy, the freedom that began with that declaration back in 1776, is indeed a blessing, it is blessing from God. But as one looks back through history, we should understand that freedom is not just something esteemed by Americans, but freedom is something that has been esteemed by mankind in general. Millions of
people throughout the history of this country. In fact the only way a Roman citizen could be receive the death penalty was for treason against Rome. "Yes. Even in Biblical times people wanted freedom. The Jewish leaders are not to happy with him for preaching the gospel."” I want to point out the words of the commander. the Roman commander brings his troop in to break up the melee. There is no doubt in my mind that this man treasured his freedom. Paul is in Jerusalem. it came with certain privileges. As a Roman citizen you had the benefit of a trial before you were bound and beaten. Just a little intro to that passage. the commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks. "Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman. They wanted to the rights that being free brought with it. "But I was born [a citizen]. and said that he should be examined under scourging. and uncondemned?" When the centurion heard [that]. Other rights of Romans citizen included being able to vote." And Paul said. he treasured it because it cost him as great sum of money. While it was costly to him. "Tell me. this citizenship which brought with it freedom." Then the commander came and said to him. have come to American to taste that freedom. Acts 22:23-28 “Then. to own property. to make contracts. "Take care what you do. We see an example of this in Acts 22:23-28." The commander answered. As a freeman. You were to pledge allegiance to Rome. so that he might know why they shouted so against him.” They point is that this man bought this citizenship. Along with the privilege to being a citizen were some conditions. Paul said to the centurion who stood by. While they are beating him. It was something valuable to him. . So open your Bibles to that passage of Scripture. And as they bound him with thongs. That is where we begin. for this man is a Roman. saying. are you a Roman?" He said. You were expected to act like a Romans Citizen. he states “With a large sum I obtained this citizenship. he went and told the commander. with at “great sum”. this gets them fired up even more. We see one in our passage. “With a great sum obtained I this freedom. People still come to our country because we are free. as they cried out and tore off [their] clothes and threw dust into the air.” The KJV reads. The crowd is a against Paul they seize him wanting to kill him. "With a large sum I obtained this citizenship. a citizen there were benefits that came along with that. and supposedly bringing a gentile into the temple. They give Paul a chance to speak to the crowd.
That is the freedom we have in Christ. It has it cost. you are My disciples indeed. Let us take a look at those in reference to this freedom we have in Jesus Christ. that there is a greater freedom. "Therefore if the Son makes you free. we are expected to obey the laws of our nation. Here Jesus is speaking. you shall be free indeed. I say to you. that if the Son makes you free. you shall be free indeed. Cost. "If you abide in My word.So what we see in the case of this man’s freedom. "Most assuredly. whoever commits sin is a slave of sin." They answered Him. and expected conditions.” As citizens of heaven through Jesus Christ. As we are told in Phil 3:20. Cost. you will be free indeed. as with the freedom mentioned in Acts 8. and it also had expected conditions. ‘You will be made free’?" Jesus answered them. if you know the truth. But may we understand. the Lord Jesus Christ. the truth of what He has done on our behalf that sets us free. it is the truth of who the Son of God is. As the passage states. Listen to John 8:31-36. and have never been in bondage to anyone. we see those three truths I mentioned still in place. that is freedom in the spiritual sense comes from Jesus Christ. his citizenship. The same is true with each one us who enjoy the freedom as US citizens. and the truth shall make you free. and the freedom declared by our forefathers. we have a freedom that this world simply cannot understand. There is a cost to the freedom we have in Christ. But. it had privileges. as great as the freedom is the we celebrate every 4th of July. And there are expected conditions. privilege. There is a greater citizenship. from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior. either dead or wounded. [but] a son abides forever. “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him. to numerous to count here. "And you shall know the truth. It has its privileges. The passage of Scripture is clear the Lord Jesus is the source of that freedom.” Notice that Jesus states. the lives of over 2 million Americans. that is the truth about the Son of God. "We are Abraham’s descendants. . was it had a cost. Our freedom. “For our citizenship is in heaven. How [can] you say. "And a slave does not abide in the house forever. It is the Son who makes us free.
and from the Scripture we can see what it cost the Son. but with the precious blood of Christ. We must recognize that Jesus our Lord willing laid down His life even though He did not have to die. I want us to understand a couple things regarding the cost of our freedom. [like] silver or gold. This command I have received from My Father. as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. This is not to take away anything from one who makes such a heroic sacrifice. they are in the end anticipating what will eventually happen anyway. Listen to 1 Peter 1:18-19. it means to “liberate by payment of ransom”. because I lay down My life that I may take it again. we have been liberated as it were. You see we have been set free. “knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things. and I have power to take it again. but the point is it simply cannot be compared to the sacrifice on the cross by our Lord Jesus Christ The second reason that the sacrifice of Christ on the cross was more costly than any sacrifice of man is that Christ’s death was deliberate. I have power to lay it down. They will die anyway. John 10:17-18 “"Therefore My Father loves Me. While a person may in fact sacrifice their lives for others. The mission of Christ from His very birth was to die for those who He . from your aimless conduct [received] by tradition from your fathers. Jesus did not have to die. Jesus did not have to die. We cannot equate their sacrifice with the sacrifice of Christ. First reason. to purchase that freedom. but I also believe that we cannot speak of the death of Christ in human terms.So then the Son is the source of that freedom. but with His own blood."” You see because Jesus was perfect and never sinned death had no grip on Him. The sacrifice of Christ on the cross at Calvary goes further than any sacrifice of man for the following three reasons. I did point out that over 1 million Americans died for our freedom as a nation. through a ransom and Christ paid that ransom not with silver or gold. He choose to die. "No one takes it from Me. but I lay it down of Myself.” I want to point out that the word redeemed there is the Greek word LUTROO (lew-tra-o).
It is not the physical consciousness of pain. That is what it cost Him to secure our freedom. It effects the spiritual side of our lives. The third reason that the sacrifice of Christ on the cross was more costly than any sacrifice of man is that Christ’s death was not just physical but spiritual. So we can see how great the cost of our spiritual freedom. because they both owe the debt of sin. joy. "Most assuredly. How [can] you say. “"And you shall know the truth. It effects our emotions. and have never been in bondage to anyone. If effects our physical bodies. That my friends is the separation that Jesus Christ endured for those for whom He died. you shall be free indeed. Apart from Christ sin keeps our whole being in bondage. love. Thus we need the Lord Jesus Christ to free us from that bondage. That is what it cost Him to set us free. God is the source of all that is good. whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. Our privilege is two fold. hell. [but] a son abides forever. You see spiritual death is separation from God. grace. "Therefore if the Son makes you free.” Whether we recognize it our not. "We are Abraham’s descendants. I say to you. Let us now turn to the privilege that it brings. First and foremost we have been freed from the bondage of sin. ‘You will be made free’?" Jesus answered them. Once more listen to John 8:32-36.calls His friends. I stated in a sermon a few weeks ago. "And a slave does not abide in the house forever. and the truth shall make you free. . This can be said of no other person. The sad thing is that so many of do not even realize that we are indeed to slave to sin. to set us free from sin. peace. The very purpose Christ is sent into the world by the heavenly Father is to die for us. comfort. how so many of us do not realize the fact that sin permeates our whole being. To be cast into the lake of fire is to be cast into a place were none of that exists. how we think about ourselves and others. it is the total separation from God. we are slaves to sin. We are born slaves to sin. That is what makes hell." They answered Him. One person cannot died spiritually for another. A man or women can only die a physical death to assure someone freedom.
[even] Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. 1:10 “and to wait for His Son from heaven. Listen to three verses of Scripture. We must also understand that we have been freed from the consequences of sin and what is the consequence. You have been freed from that. being freed from guilt. Christ wants you to be free of the guilt of sin. So many Christians I know do not want to stand fast in the freedom they have in Christ. Christ has set us free from the bondage of sin. Our forgiveness is complete in Christ. They continue to get entangled in again in the bondage of sin. “And a slave does not abide in the house forever. Knowing that in Christ we will abide forever with God. Once more I read to you the words of John 8:35. to become slaves of God. They do this because they continue to walk around with guilt. I believe it is because you do not understand the cost of your freedom. In this freedom we have from Christ we have security. freedom from a life of guilt.Yet if the Son has made you free you are free indeed.” In Christ we have been freed from the consequence of sin which is the wrath of God. Stand in that freedom. the righteous wrath of a Holy God. “Much more then. but the wrath of God abides on him. Listen to Gal 5:1 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free.” We are to stand in the freedom that we have in Christ. “"He who believes in the Son has everlasting life. we shall be saved from wrath through Him. having now been justified by His blood. that is why He did what He did on the cross. Guilt is just a way of living with the believe that the price paid for your freedom was not enough. and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Security in knowing we will never face the wrath of God. So stand in the freedom we have in Christ.” The second aspect of this privilege is that we are now free to serve God. My friend it was enough as we have seen. ."” Rom. If you are plagued by guilt. [but] a son abides forever. 5:9. and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life. whom He raised from the dead. We are no longer under the God’s wrath. No need to allow guilt to beat you up. John 3:36.” 1 Thess.
you [are] the branches. you have your fruit to holiness. “"I am the vine. what I am saying is these are expected conditions. I am going to be brief because we are running out of time. But as the passage states. “But now having been set free from sin. we will serve God. and the end. we will serve sin.” . and having become slaves of God. So we have see the cost. I am also reminded of John 15:5. and of lawlessness [leading] to [more] lawlessness.” In this freedom from sin we have in Christ. you have your fruit to holiness. and having become slaves of God. you have your fruit to holiness…” Those who are slaves to God WILL have fruit in their lives. these are things that demonstrate we are free in Christ. First. everlasting life. and the end. expected condition. He who abides in Me. and having become slaves of God. and I in him. fruit that brings glory to God. They will seek to bring God glory. For when you were slaves of sin. to produce fruit. Sin had corrupted all that we did.” What that passage tells us is that when we were in bondage to sin. we were free in regards to righteousness. When we were slaves to sin. “And having been set free from sin. that is all we could do. because now He is our master. That passage we just read from Rom. For just as you presented your members [as] slaves of uncleanness. In others words we could do nothing righteous before God. If we are slaves to sin. 6. now let us turn to the expected conditions. “But now having been set free from sin. for without Me you can do nothing. I speak in human [terms] because of the weakness of your flesh.Listen to Romans 6:18-22. You see a slave will serve his master. What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things [is] death. If we are slaves to God. the privilege. everlasting life. bears much fruit. you were free in regard to righteousness. we are now able to do good. We are able to serve God. We are know able to do works of righteousness. Let us be clear in talking about this. you became slaves of righteousness. so now present your members [as] slaves [of] righteousness for holiness. But now having been set free from sin. I am not saying that these are conditions for gaining this freedom we have in Christ.
But I pray you would be thankful for the greater freedom we have in Christ. He died. the blood of the Son God. let him deny himself. “Then He said to [them] all. Second expected condition. For it is a freedom that comes with a cost. And it too comes with privileges. If you are not walking with Him in obedience. We walk as followers of Christ in obedience. then you are not walking in the light. We walk with Him. we must deny ourselves and follow Christ. a very cost. Last expected condition.” If you have truly been set free through faith in the death and resurrection of Christ. you must deny yourselves and follow Him. Take up your cross daily and walk with the Lord Jesus. You must repent. We walk in truth and righteousness. we have fellowship with one another.If you have been freed by the Son of God. privileges that are great blessings. “If we say that we have fellowship with Him. we will walk in the light. and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. LET US PRAY .” As being freed by Christ we walk in the light. For that too comes with a cost. It also comes with expected conditions. I also pray that each one you would experience this freedom in Christ. then you will bear much fruit. and follow Me. That is to say we are witnesses to Christ. "If anyone desires to come after Me. was buried. If we are walking in the Light then we must be walking with Christ. and walk in darkness. Experience it through repentance and believing in the gospel of Jesus Christ. rose again the third day. Luke 9:23. we lie and do not practice the truth. but in darkness. Repent and believe. those things by which you and others know that you are free in Christ. You must place God first in your life. a freedom that comes with privileges. it is a freedom that comes with expected conditions. and take up his cross daily. 1 John 1:5-7. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light. In closing my prayer today is that you would indeed be thankful to God for the freedom that we enjoy here in this county. then He abides in you and you in Him.
