EDITORIAL... ✍ “Will of the Deity” should reign Supreme!!!
In 1750, King Martanda Varma, the most powerful of the Travancore rulers donated the
Kingdom to Lord Padmanabha Swamy and pledged that he and his descendants would serve
the kingdom as servants of Lord Padmanabha and came to be known as Padmanabha Dasa,
the Deity being the King. This Dana Patram has been preserved to date and also filed in the
SC.
The British had observed the tradition and honored Lord Padmanabha Swamy Deity
with a 21-gun salute given only to the Ruler. After signing the instrument of accession with
Govt of India the then Maharaja and Padmanabha Dasa guided the formulation of the interim
constitution of Travancore passed on 24th March 1948.
The interim Constitution while accepting the principle of Democracy vested the administration
of all temples with Shri Padmanabha Dasa it also stipulated that with regards to temple administration
the ‘Will of Deity’ will prevail over the will of the people. This is a modification of the obligation
in the Dana Patram where entire administration was to be done as per the ‘Will of Deity’ i.e.
non-temple area administration was to be done as per ‘Will of People’ but temple administration
was still to be done as per ‘Will of Deity’
The above principle that the ‘Will of Deity’ which is distinct from ‘Will of People’ will
prevail as far as administration of Hindu Temples in Travancore was preserved in the covenant
signed by Govt of India with Shri Padmanabha Dasa representing the Deity.
Sardar Patel promised in the Constituent assembly that the constitution of states will
form an integral part of the constitution of India.
The above obligation that ‘Will of Deity’ will prevail in temple administration as per the
principle of dana patram dedicating Travancore Kingdom to Lord Padmanabha Swamy Deity
forms an integral part of our Constitution and an obligation inherited by Govt of India as per Art
295(b).
Keeping in view Art (1) of our Constitution taking our ancient name of ‘Bharat’ and the
sentiments attached to this ancient name expressed during discussion in the Constituent Assembly
where from ancient times the principle explained by Lord Rama <<∫VÏNÏ˛¬∫yo ÃtÁYu¬ EÁF| üÁm\ÁL
ú∫ ƒYå åÁ\ÁF|>> (In Ram Rajya from ancient times pledged word is valued more than one’s
life)Defines Bharat;
The Govt. of India is obligated by the dana patram read with Art 295(b) to guide the
Supreme Court correctly in Lord Padmanabha Swamy case which is now in final hearing stage
that: -
• The Deity is Ruler as per Art 363 (2)(b) and the treasure belongs to the Deity. The
Deity has all the fundamental rights as per the ratio of privy purse judgement.
• The obligation that administration of Hindu temples is to be done respecting the
‘Will of Deity’ protected by the interim constitution of Travancore and the covenant
which formed integral part of our Constitution is to be respected by the Supreme
Court and cannot be tampered with as per bar in Art 363 read with other Articles of
Constitution.
• The ‘Will of Deity’ should have an integral role in the administration which was followed
for centuries should be contunued. !
There should be no regional boundaries for temples.

SLEEPY FOR THE SINFUL

Just before the start of the epic war of
Mahabharata, both Arjuna and Duryodhana decided
to visit Krishna to convince him to join their respective
sides.
Dharmaraja, the eldest of the Pandavas, told
Arjuna, “My dear brother! Lord Krishna will always
be by the side of His devotees. He is called Achyuta
– the One who never forsakes His devotees! Therefore
we can rest assured that Krishna’s helping hand
will come to us anyway. However, it is our duty
to approach the Lord in the proper way and seek
His benevolence! So you go to Dwaraka and seek
the grace of the Lord!”
Adhering to his words, Arjuna proceeded to
Dwaraka.
On the other hand, Sakuni, the wicked uncle
of Duryodhana, advised him to approach Krishna
and seek His help. Duryodhana told Sakuni, “I don’t
think Krishna will do any kind of help to us! He
has always been by the side of those Pandavas
thus far! Will He do any help to us?”
But Sakuni reiterated his stand saying, “No
my dear Duryodhana! You and Krishna are kinsmen.
You have given your daughter Lakshmana in marriage
to Krishna’s son Saambha. Krishna should render
His help to you in recognition of this kinship!”
Gaining some confidence through these words
of Sakuni, Duryodhana also went to Dwaraka.
The all-knowing Lord decided to play a sport
at this situation. He pretended to sleep at His royal
couch in His palace. There were two seats by the
side of His cot – a royal throne and an ordinary
stool.
Though Arjuna reached Dwaraka well before
Duryodhana, being a devotee, he knew that one
should approach the Lord through His devotees only
and should not go to Him directly. So He first visited
Vasudeva and Devaki, the parents of Lord Krishna
and also paid His obeisances to all the wives of
Krishna and then came to Krishna’s palace.
By that time, Duryodhana had reached
Krishna’s palace first. He found Krishna sleeping
and decided to wait for him to wake up. He sat
on the throne placed by the head of the sleeping
Lord.

Arjuna entered a few minutes later, found Krishna
sleeping and he also decided to wait. He found a
stool near Krishna’s feet and sat on it.
The Lord, who was pretending to be asleep,
woke up. He saw Arjuna, seated by the side of His
feet first. “My dear Arjuna! Welcome! Did I make you
wait for so long? What’s the matter?” asked Krishna.
“No!” shouted Duryodhana, who was by the
side of the head of Krishna. “I was the one who
came first. But Krishna! You ignored me, a king,
your kinsman and You are welcoming that Arjuna,
the pauper who came late as well!”
Krishna politely replied, “Duryodhana! You might
have come first. But I first saw Arjuna only! That’s
why I enquired him first! You first tell me the purpose
of your visit!”
Arjuna told Krishna that they had come to
seek the support of Krishna in the ensuing battle.
Duryodhana, who, by then, understood that
Krishna might say yes to Arjuna even before asking
Duryodhana why he had come, interrupts the
conversation to tell Krishna that he had also come
with the same request and since he had come there
first, Krishna must entertain his request first.
Krishna, who in His heart, had already decided
to side with the Pandavas, then came up with an
ingenious way of reaching a settlement.
Krishna said he would divide the request into
two parts and would let them choose which part
each wanted in the context of the upcoming war. He
told them that in doing so, He was trying to
accommodate the request of both of them.
Krishna also told Duryodhana that it had been
unfortunate that upon waking up, his eyes had first
fallen on Arjuna, and since Arjuna was the younger
of the two, He was honour-bound to give Arjuna
the first choice. Duryodhana, reluctantly, agreed
to this.
Well, the two parts offered by Krishna include: Either
Krishna alone (who would neither wield any arms
nor strike a single blow on the battlefield) or the
entire Navakoti Narayana army, with soldiers and
weapons of all kinds.
“Arjuna! Tell Me your choice first!” the Lord
said.

Arjuna, as expected, chose Krishna alone.
Duryodhana, at this point, was unable to believe
his luck. He had got the Navakoti Narayana army
which he was eagerly waiting for! He felt that Arjuna
had made the biggest mistake of his life. He thanked
Krishna for His offer and gleefully left the room with
dreams of winning the battle.
Krishna sported a gentle and enigmatic smile
on his lips.
But ultimately, Duryodhana, who wished for
the Navakoti Narayana army, lost the battle while
Arjuna, who opted for the weaponless Krishna alone
won the battle.
This incident shows that the Lord appears to
sleep on certain occasions to ensure that His glances
don’t fall on evil forces like Duryodhana. NIMISHA
means One who sleeps. The Lord appears to be
somnolent to the sinful people.
At the same time, the Lord never hesitates
to wake up from His sleep to bless His devotees.
Thirumazhisai Piraan, the fourth of the mystic saints
Azhwars, went to Kumbhaghonam to have darshan
of the Lord Shaarngapani, also known as
Aaraavamudhaazhwan – the insatiable nectar.
He was amused by the lying posture of the
Lord and asked Him, “Are Your Feet tired because
of walking so many miles in Trivikrama, Rama,
Krishna incarnations? Is Your Divine body worn off
due to Your efforts while lifting the Mother Earth
in Varaha incarnation? You appear to be taking
rest here at the banks of Cauvery! I, Your devotee,
have come all the way to have Your darshan! Rise
from Your Adi Sesha couch and speak a few words
to me!”
The Lord immediately rose from His bed to
bless the Azhwar. He then requested the Lord to
remain in that position itself. Therefore, abiding by
the words of His devotee, the Lord chose to be

This sloka means the Moolavarat, who had till then
enjoyed the beauty of the hind part of the Divine
body of the Utsavar, wanted to enjoy the beauty
of the Utsavar’s front part also. Therefore He rose
up and peeped into the front side of the Utsavar.
Lord, thus seems to be sleepy for the sinful souls
who enjoy enmity to Him and His devotees but
ever agile for His devotees and so is called NIMISHA.
Sri Parasara Bhagavan in Vishnupuana says that
the Lord appears to be in spiritual slumber which
again is nothing but His own sport contemplating
on His own self the Vasudeva. Perhaps this indicates
His planning this sports in His incarnation as
Vasudeva. His sloka runs thus

I would like to remind VAK Readers about my
preamble to the current series a few months
ago where I pointed out that out of all the four
Judgements Justice Indu Malhotra’s judgement
stands out as a custodian of Dharma. The rest
of the Learned Judges wrote a demonic
judgement with no mind to protect Sanathana
Dharma. In writing their judgements these
Learned Judges did not seem to have
exercised their wisdom and thought that they
can create a new Dharma book overwriting
the existing one. What they have not
understood is that the Almighty is not
subservient to them and he does not have to
follow their judgement in blessing the devotees.
Devotees have to still follow the tenets of the
religion or dharma sashtra to please the Lord
and not the Supreme Court judgements. A
similar situation happened long long ago in
the ancient times when a powerful demon king
not only wanted to change the Dharma shastras
to his favour but also made people practice
it and also wanted himself to be anointed as
the Lord of the Lords and become the Almightly
himself. He tortured the whole world and had
to be ultimately corrected by the Lord of the
Lords by taking the form of Narasimha. The
whole story of Hiranyakashipu and Prahlada
is about how materialistic people or Rajasa
and Thaamasa character people are torturing
the Sattvic spiritual beings and ultimately the
consequence they face. Sattvic and devotional
environment is very essential to protect
Dharma in this whole country or for that matter
any world. If there is Sattvic and devotional
environment and attitude to not harm or cause
pain to others, the Lord himself will come to
protect such devotees and vanquish the hatred
coming from Raajasa and Thaamasic people.

excellence in his current birth. When His father
Hiranyakashipu went to perform penance at
Mandhara mountain, the Devas army lead by
Devendra attacked the city of Asuras and made
them run helter-skelter. They destroyed the
palace of Hiranyakashipu, imprisoned and
abducted queen Kayadhu. At this time Kayadhu
was pregnant and was having Prahlada in her
womb.

At that time, by chance Devarshi Narada was
passing by and when he saw this scene he
went and advised Devendra to release
Kayadhu as it was not a proper deed to take
other ’s wife as prisoner. He said “Oh!
Devendra, you should not take this innocent
and blemishless wife of some one else along
with you. She is a pathivratha and release
her at once”.
For this Devendra replied “Oh! Holy one, she
is bearing my enemy in the womb. How can
I spare him? Let Kayadhu stay with me till
she gives birth to the child and after that when
she hands over the child to me and I eliminate
him I will release her.”
Sage Narada replied “Devendra! The person
in the womb of Kayadhu is free from sins and
is of sattvic character. He is a great soul unlike
his father. He has no influence of his father’s
characters. He is very powerful and he cannot
be killed by you”
Listening to the great advise of Narada with
devotion and expressing his respect to his
guru, Devendra released Kayadhu and left to
his abode. Narada also took Kayadhu to his
Ashram, consoled her and requested her to
stay in his Ashram till Hiranyakashipu returns
from his penance. She was also fearlessly

living in the ashrama of Devarshi Narada. More
over, in order to have a proper child birthing,
she was serving the sage with great devotion.
She was desiring that her child birthing should
happen only after her husband returns. She
believed that this can be made possible if she
serves the sage with devotion and hence she
was performing these duties with a purpose.
Sage Narada also bestowed her the power
of holding the child birth till Hiranyakashipu
returns. In order to eliminate her distress and
also to provide good knowledge to Prahlada,
Sage Narada taught Kayaadhu about devotion
to Lord Narayana, Dharma, knowledge about
soul and body etc. This teaching was also
received by Prahlada from the womb of his
mother. As waiting for this circumstance, his
great deeds of previous birth started giving
fruits and Prahlada under the great devotional
environment of Sage Narada became Lord
Narayana’s devotee from the womb itself. This
is the reason why even today pregnant ladies
are advised to listen to good stories about Lord

Kayadhu back to his palace where the child
Prahlada was born. Even when he was a child
Prahlada's mind was always with Lord, he
never played like a normal child. He was
oblivious to the world and always engrossed
in the devotion to Lord. He was time and again
hugged by Lord Narayana and due to the hug,
he was always thinking of Lord. Even he did
his daily chores like eating, sitting, drinking
walking, sleeping, he was not having any
realization of them. He was always possessed
by Lord Narayana. Some times he would cry
thinking of Lord and sometimes he would laugh
in joy given by Lord Narayana. Sometimes
he will sing his praise and sometimes he would
dance in joy. Prahlada was always in great
love experience with Lord and was not

Ramanuja’s Journey to Sharada Peeth – Kashmir

Lord Ramanuja, the great Vaishnavite seer whose
1000 th year birth day was celebrated this year
throughout India with pomp and glory. He was a
seer who brought to light the concept of the whole
universe as one family : Vasudhaiva kutumbakam
and brought to light the right understanding and
interpretation of Vedas and established equal
chance for all living beings to attain salvation at
the end of the current birth by surrendering before
the Lord – Saranagathi. In order to putforth his
understanding Lord Ramanuja had to first understand
what his predecessor Acharyas have done to
explain the Vedas. On this account he visited
atleast twice to Sharada Peetham of Kashmir which
was the seat of Goddess Saraswathi and a huge
store house of learning known as Shree Bhandaram.
VAK is attempting to bring the interesting items
of this effort of Lord Ramanuja to its readers.
Story so far:
Obtaining the ordainment of Lord Varadaraja of
Kanchi, Lord Ramanuja and Kuresa set out to study
Boudhayana Vrutti Grantha at Sharada peetham
in Kashmir. They had taken a fast route and
reached Kashmir in just about 6 months time from
Kanchi travelling almost everyday. They reached
Chakradhara theertham at the outskirts of Kashmir
and had been well received by a learned scholar
Keshavacharya who till recently served as the Prime
Minister of the King. When they had the darshan
of Lord Chakradhara there, Kshitiraja arrived in
the temple and was camping. Keshavacharya was
planning to take his help to help Lord Ramanuja.
He was trying to understand how Boudhayana vrutti
Grantha is important and missed the attention of
the great saint Yamunacharya. A plausible
explanation provided to this seemed to be due
to foreign invasions and unrest. While the
discussions were happening a stealth person with
royal looks visited the place, escaped and was
captured. Next early morning when the three people
went to Chakradhara theertha for morning rituals
they met the royal family member Kshitiraja who
was one of the Satraps and cousin of King
Ananthaditya who agreed to learn about their mission
and help. They completed the morning rituals during
which certain rare events happened showing the
greatness of Lord Ramanuja. They were conversing
about white lotus in the Chakradhara theertha…
Lord Ramanuja smiled with Radiance and said to

“Swamy! Whenever I see the white Lotus known
as Pundareeka in Sanskrit I get a feeling of having
the sight of Lord Narayana’s beautiful eyes. It is
said in the Chandogya Upanishad that there is Lord
resident in the Sun and he has golden body, golden
hair, golden moustache, golden nails and all in gold
with golden radiance. His eyes are radiant and
beautiful like the white lotus. That is why the Lord
is known as Pundareekaaksha (úÏlg∫yN˛Áq:) in Vedas,
Upanishads, puranas and itihaasas. The white lotus
in Chakradhara theertha among the shining gold
colour waters due to Sun rays in the morning reminds
me of Lord himself. There are lots of black bees
going around and sitting on the beautiful lotus flower.
This reminds me of Lord’s black Pupil in the eyes.
Thiruppan Azhwar also known as Munivaahana after
having the great darshan of Lord’s eyes, described
this elaborately for our benefit for the first time and
recorded it in his Amalanaadipiraan songs. He
described Lord’s eyes having black pupil, large
flowered and radiant like the white lotus with the
dark red veins in them resembling the dark red
veins in Lord’s eyes. I was dumbfound at this sight
and great are those saints who daily have the sight
of Lord’s eyes in the form of white lotus”
“Oh! Great Saint! You are also one among them I
think as you can see Lord’s beauty everywhere.
I am also aware of the verse you are referring to
in Chandogya Upanishad as I learnt from Trigartha
school. No teacher gave me this meaning in this
form. The teachers there were following the
commentaries written by Sri Adi Sankara and they
told me a different meaning which I am not able
to even say in front of the divine being such as
you. I am unable to tolerate when the students
in the agrahaara near Vijayeshwar Mutt close to
this kingdom recite these verses along with the
meanings as suggested by the great saint in the
past.” responded Kesavacharya.
Lord Ramanuja smiled and looked at Kuresha.
Kuresha responded “Yes. This is quite well known.
My Acharya refuted them even while he was a student
at Kancheepuram under the famous Yadavaprakasa
who wrote the Vaijayanti dictionary”.

“The key issue there is how to decipher the verse
:oÀÆ ÆsÁ N˛õÆÁÃÊ úÏ©g∫yN˛™zƒ™uqmy People have Sanskrit
dictionary meaning for words which was constructed
based on general usage of words. As per the
dictionary Kapi (N˛uú) means monkey and Aasam
( EÁÃÊ ) means buttocks. Although the word
Pundareekam (úÏ l g∫yN˛Ê) means white lotus as per
famous Amara Simha’s dictionary, it also can be
referred to general lotus. The meaning thus proposed
was Lord’s eyes were like red lotus which was red
like the buttocks of the monkey. Eventhough many
learned scholars were aware of the obscene
interpretation of this verse none could suggest an
alternative to the interpretation given by Sri Adi
Sankara. The same became school text. It was
for the first time Lord Ramanuja, my guru through
great devotion provided the first proper meaning
to this verse. He said Kapi (N˛uú) means Sun. This
line exists in Taittariya Aranyakam as N˛uúƒ|ßuÀo
oz\å where the commentator Bhattabhaskara followed
the vedic dictionary given by Yaska and stated the
word (N˛uú) means Sun. The word itself denotes Sun
as such and also one can derive it via the fact
that Sun drinks water known as in Sanskrit NÊ ˛
uú§oyuo N˛uú: Hence NÊ ˛ õÆÁÃÊ úÏ l g∫yN˛ means white
lotus bloomed due to Sun. This is the best
interpretation taking care of all specific meaning
items like white lotus for Pundareekam (úÏlg∫yN˛Ê) .
Now when my Acharya saw this rare sight of white
Lotus in the pond of Chakradhara theertha shining
in sun, it seemed to him like the Lord stood in
there and hence his engrossment “.

wonderful interpretation” said Keshavacharya.

temple bells were ringing and it was Naivedhyam
time for the Lord during the third pooja of the day.
A large set of devotees were waiting for the Lord’s
screen to be removed and mangala aarthi to be
performed. Keshavacharya took his two revered
guests and made them stand very close to the
screen to have a special darshan of the Lord and
also to specially honour them in the temple.
Kshitiraja was also standing in the royal row along
with his beautiful queen Taramathi. It was a great
sight. There was an orchestra with thirty two types
of different musical instruments who were singing
the song. There was a gallery in which professional
dancers were there who just paused their
performance and were waiting for the Lord’s
naivedhyam to be over to continue further.
When the Naivedhyam concluded the bells stopped.
The screen was taken off and Lord Chakradhara
with his consorts was visible to all devotees. The
bells rang again in different way now to signify the
large Aarathi. Amidst Sukla Yajurveda Manthras
and manthras of three Vedas the Arathi and devotional
chores of the Lord were completed. At that time
Kesavacharya signaled the main temple priest and
they came with Lord’s first theertham and prasadam
and a shesha vastram for Lord Ramanuja. He was
given full temple honours. Kesvacharya told all the
devotees that here is a great learned saint who
has immense powers and knowledge to properly
interpret Vedas and we will all be benefitted by
him. He should be patronized here and he will stay
for a few days to complete his mission.
Once all the main devotional chores got completed,
all the devotees came and prostrated before Lord
Ramanuja. The first among them was Kshitiraja along
with his consort. Lord Ramanuja blessed all the
devotees. After all this he delivered a speech on
purpose of life for people and how one should get
devoted to Lord of Lords. Many devotees listened

Temple deities are citizens, have Constitutional rights
A New Zealand river revered by the Maori has been
recognised by Parliament as a “legal person”, in a move
believed to be the world’s first. The river has been
granted the same legal rights as a human being.
The local Maori tribe of Whanganui in the North Island
has fought for the recognition of their river—the third-
largest in New Zealand—as an ancestor for 140 years.
Hundreds of tribal representatives wept with joy when
their bid to have their kin awarded legal status as a
living entity was made into law.
According to news reports, the reason the locals had
taken this approach was because they had always
considered the river as their ancestor. They were quoted
as saying that they fought to find an approximation in
law so that everyone else could understand that treating
the river as a living entity, from their perspective, was
the right way to approach it as opposed to treating it
from the perspective of ownership and management,
which had been the traditional model for a century. The
new status accorded to the river meant abusing or
harming it was equivalent to harming the tribe.
In India, the Ganga river, considered sacred by more
than 1 billion Indians, has become the first non-human
entity in India to be granted the same legal rights as
people. A court in Uttarakhand has ordered that the
Ganga and its main tributary, the Yamuna, should be
accorded the status of living human entities. The
decision, which was welcomed by environmentalists,
means that polluting or damaging the rivers will be
legally equivalent to harming a person. The judges cited
the example of the Whanganui river in this context.
Why are we talking of rivers and their rights? The reason
is the recent Supreme Court judgement on Sabarimala,
which denied any rights to the Deity. The Travancore
covenant signed by Government of India was with Lord
Padmanabhaswamy. This was made clear by the then
ruler to V.P. Menon and Sardar Patel that he was only
acting on the behalf of the Deity as His servant,
Padmanabha Dasa.
The rights and privileges of all such rulers including the
Ruler of all Rulers, Lord Padmanabhaswamy Deity was
protected in our Constitution by the Constituent
Assembly, as advised by Sardar Patel in his address to
the Constituent Assembly.
The Supreme Court, in the famous Privy Purse
judgement in 1971 interpreting the Constitutional
guarantees given to rulers held that “The Rulers who
were before integration of their States aliens qua the
Dominion Government are now citizens.”
Even though the 26th Amendment to the Constitution
removed the privileges and rights due to all rulers in an
immoral act, the Supreme Court in a 1993 judgement
upheld the 26th Amendment of the Constitution,
approving the statement of objects of the amendment
as “The distinction between the erstwhile Rulers and
the citizenry of India has to be put an end to so as to
have a common brotherhood.”
Prior to the 26th amendment of the Constitution, only
Lord Padmanabhaswamy Deity, who was the ruler of
the Travancore State, became Citizen as per the ratio of
the Privy Purse judgement, by virtue of the 26th
Amendment of the Constitution.

The SC judgement ratio upholding the conversion of
Ruler to Citizen of Anantha Padmanabhaswamy under
Article 14 of the Constitution is to create a common
brotherhood. From this decision, all temple deities
should now be considered as citizens, as there cannot
be a distinction between one Hindu deity and another in
our Constitution under Article 14.
In the Citizenship Act of 1955, Section 2(f) reads as
follows: “‘person’ does not include any company or
association or body of individuals, whether incorporated
or not”.
In Section 2(31) of the Income Tax Act of 1961 “person”
was defined including “artificial juridical persons” and
the SC held in a 1969 judgement that Hindu deities can
be taxed as per this definition.
In view of the above, since Section 2(f) of the Citizenship
Act of 1955 did not bar Hindu deities as juristic persons
from the definition of the term “person”, clearly there is
no bar for the Central government to register Hindu deities
as citizens under Section 5(a).
In view of the fact that the Central government granted
citizenship to Lord Padmanabhaswamy Deity as Ruler
when the Travancore kingdom was integrated, as held
by the SC in its 1971 judgement, and due to the 26th
Amendment of the Constitution and the ratio of the SC
judgement of 1993 upholding the same under Article 14,
it is now duty bound to register all Hindu deities as
citizens under Section 5(a) of the Citizenship Act.
The Union Government should apply the same rule as
that of the Rivers Ganga and Yamuna and register all
the temple deities as citizens so that many issues can
get resolved with this one stroke.

Sanyasis and right wing leaders come together
Thousands gathered at the meeting to address the
issue of allowing women of all ages into the Sabarimala
temple.
From a distance it looked like an orange flag was
spread across the Putharikandam Maidanam in
Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday evening. The
thousands gathered there from five districts of Kerala
for a meeting called Ayyappa Bhakta Sangamam
(Ayyappa Devotees Gathering) chose to wear saffron
coloured caps. Attended by many sanyasis from across
the country, the programme, put together by the
Sabarimala Karma Samithi, was inaugurated by
spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi. A rally taken
out by hundreds of men and women across the city,
joined the gathering. This is also the first time that
sanyasis and spiritual leaders have come together in
such a large number to support the fight against entry
of women of all ages into Sabarimala.
The crowd rose to chant her name when Mata
Amritanandamayi came to the function, and later
spoke, about those breaking traditions, without proper
knowledge of the temple rituals. Starting her speech
chanting Swamy Sharanamayappa ki jai, Mata
Amritanandamayi called the controversies surrounding

Sabarimala unfortunate. "A temple is like a child that
needs to be taken care of. Like its parents take care of
a child, a temple needs the care of the tantri and the
devotees who come there,” she said.
The gathering was welcomed by former DGP TP
Senkumar, who is a member of the Seva Bharati, a
Sangh Parivar outfit. He said that the Kerala
government and the police were disrespecting the
Supreme Court verdict which while allowing all women
to enter the Sabarimala temple, made it clear that they
should all be Hindu believers. The women who were
attempting to enter were neither Hindu, nor believers,
he claimed. Senkumar kept taking digs at the media
for asking questions about who was a believer and
who was not, and said that all their doubts would be
cleared at the meeting.
The presidential speech was given by Swami
Chidananda Puri, of the Kulathoor Advaithashramam,
who mocked the Kerala government by saying it was
only because of one man – Chief Minister Pinarayi
Vijayan – that such a gathering happened now. Several
more digs were taken at the CM, with the Swami saying
that the minister should not think he is king – this was
in reference to the CM’s speech about an instance
when a mel shanti (chief priest) was dismissed by a
king.
Other speakers too mocked and targeted the CM and
ministers, MM Mani and Kadakampally Surendran.
On stage were also KP Sasikala, Hindu Aikya Vedi state
president, BJP state president Sreedharan Pillai, film
director Viji Thampy who came forward to take a pledge
on ‘dharma raksha’ and actor Kollam Thulasi, who was
booked for making threatening remarks against women
who attempted to enter Sabarimala. Spiritual leader
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar also addressed the gathering
through a video.

‘Padmanabhaswamy temple belongs to public’
The Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple in
Thiruvananthapuram.
The Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple in Kerala is a
“public temple”, the erstwhile Travancore royal family told
the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
Arguing before a Bench of Justices U.U. Lalit and Indu
Malhotra, senior advocate Krishnan Venugopal, for the
erstwhile royals, submitted that the wealth of the
Padmanabha Swamy temple belongs to the deity.
The ex-royal family was merely managing the wealth of
the deity as ‘Padmanabha dasa’.
The submissions were part of the final round of hearings
in a batch of special leave petitions filed against a 2011
decision of the Kerala High Court.
‘No management rights’
The High Court had essentially held that upon the death
of the last ruler of the erstwhile State of Travancore on
July 20, 1991, the petitioner, His Highness Sri Marthanda
Varma, did not step into the shoes of the ruler and cannot
claim management rights over the temple under the
provisions of the Travancore Cochin Hindu Religious
Institutions Act, 1950.
The high court had passed a series of directions in
exercise of its jurisdiction as ‘parens patriae’ and
concluded that the temple, its properties and assets
would revert and vest in the State government under Article
ã¨O`À+¨OQÍ =ÙO_Õ =ºH˜Î W`«~∞° efl ‰õÄ_® ã¨O`À+¨Ñ~¨ ∞° ™êÎ_∞» .

preserve the temple and its treasures, it was the duty of
the State Government to make arrangements in the same
way as in the case of State-run temples that were handed
over to the State Devaswom Board.
During the hearing, the court made it clear that it would
not presently go into the aspect of the opening of the
secretive Kallara B and would instead focus on the main
issues challenged in the special leave petitions.
Meanwhile, the court decided to continue on without an
amicus curiae for the present. Senior advocate Gopal
Subramanium, who had in the past presented several
reports on the management of the temple and its

Lingayat seer Shivakumara Swami dies at 111
Shivakumara Swami, who was on life support, died today
at the Siddaganga Mutt in Karnataka. A renowned Lingayat
seer, Shivakumara Swami spent a large part of his life
on a mission to eradicate inequalities in education
Shivakumara Swami was battling a lung infection and
was on life support
Shivakumara Swami joined the Siddaganga Mutt in 1930
and became its seer in 1941
Shivakumara Swami was at the forefront of ensuring better

Shivakumara Swami, a much revered seer in Karnataka,
died today. Shivakumara Swami, who was a seer at the
Siddaganga Mutt, was on life support at the mutt, which
is located in Tumakuru. He was said to be suffering from
a lung infection. He was 111 years old.
Following Shivakumara Swami's death, the Karnataka
government declared a three-day state mourning. CM
HD Kumaraswamy said that also announced a one-day
holiday for all schools, colleges and government offices
in Karnataka.
Shivakumara Swami was a renowned Lingayat seer who
was known as a "walking god" among his followers. He
headed the an education society that runs more than
100 educational institutions in Karnataka.
Shivakumara Swami joined the Siddaganga Mutt in 1930.
He became the mutt's seer in 1941 after the death of his
'guru' Uddana Swami.
In April 2008 then President APJ Abdul Kalam visited the
mutt to open the 100th birthday celebrations Shivakumara
Swami. There, Kalam praised Shivakumara Swami for
being on a "tireless mission of socio-economic
development and eradication of inequalities in
education".
Reactions to Shivakumara Swami's death poured in from
different quarters of the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered
Shivakumara Swami for being at the forefront "of ensuring
better healthcare and education facilities for the
marginalised".
"He represents the best of our traditions of
compassionate service, spirituality and protecting the
rights of the underprivileged," PM Modi said in a tweet.
In another tweet, PM Narendra Modi said that he had had
"the privilege to visit the Sree Siddaganga Mutt and receive
the blessings of His Holiness Dr Sree Sree Sree
Sivakumara Swamigalu".
"The wide range of community service initiatives being
done there are outstanding and are at an unimaginably
large scale," PM Modi said.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi also tweeted his
condolences. "I am sorry to hear about the passing of
Shivakumar Swami Ji, Pontiff of the Siddaganga Mutt,"
Rahul Gandhi said.
Shivakumara Swami was "respected and revered by
millions of Indians, from all religions & communities,"
Rahul Gandhi Said. "His passing leaves behind a deep
spiritual void. My condolences to all his followers."
Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said that he was
"deeply saddened" to hear about Shivakumara Swami's
death.
Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa said
that with the death of Shivakumara Swami, the country
"has lost a great personality".
"His passing away is a great loss... He lived a full life that
is unparalleled in history," Yeddyurappa said.

on Anecdotes on Vishnu Sahasranama authored by Sri V S Karunakaran Swamy.
Sri V S Karunakaran Swamy started this mammoth never before project of explaining
the significance of the 1000 names. Since the English meaning of this hymn is
given in this work, many in this country and those living abroad, will welcome it.
Every name is a mantra by itself, some with two and some ranging up to eight
words. The hymn is an antidote for all ills.
As the author mentioned the benefits which will accrue by reciting the various
name of Vishnu, it has been practically experienced by Devotees at Chilkur Balaji
temple who are the regular readers of VAK in which these Anecdotes have been
