2. Summary

Background :

Soil texture refers to the proportion of sand, silt, and clay in a soil. A coarsetextured soil would
have low water holding capacity, high water infiltration rates, high potential for leaching, low
nutrient retention, and should respond well to supplemental irrigation. In contrast, fine-textured
soils will remain wet longer than medium- or coarse-textured soils, have slow water infiltration
rates, high potential for denitrification, and high nutrient retention. The medium-texture soils, such
as loams, silt loams, or clay loams, have a good balance of sand silt, and clay. Medium-textured
soils generally are very productive soils that allow for sufficient water infiltration.

Result :
It is resulted that soil texture is clay to silty clay. The step to determine soil texture in the field is
follow :
1. First, Handfull of soil slowly added water was squeezed. It resulted no fall apart soil form.
2. Secondly, the soil was squeezed between thumb and forefinger to form a ribbon. It showed
that it took more than 2 inch long before it was break apart.
3. Last step is to pinch a soil and add a few drop of water. Then, it was rubbed against the
palm. It gave equal to smooth soil texture feel.

Based on that simple step, it was subjectively confirmed that soil texture is clay to silty clay.

Soil Condition Handfull of soil after Ribbon-Like Soil (>2

add a water inch)

Based on Indonesia Exploratory Soil Map issued by Ministry of Agriculture, it is also stated that
soil type in Madiun is both Vertisol and Andisol. Andisol is located near Mt. Wilis, and other
Mountains in Java. Andisol is formed in volcanic ash and typically very fertile. While Vertisol is
commonly seen in paddy field soil with high clay content (>60%) and it is also consider as a fertile
soil.

Vertisol is highly distributed in from Java to Lesser Sunda Island. It is also stated in some research
journal that Madiun Vertisol is originated from Andesitic Volcanic Material. This type of fertisol is
known to have high element of Ca++ and Mg++.
