PRELIMINARY REPORT ON THE GEO-TECHNICAL

INVESTIGATIONS FOR PM-9, 6.5 TPH BOILER AT PACKAGES

LIMITED, WALTON ROAD, LAHORE

1. GENERAL

As desired by the client the site for boiler foundation was

investigated through 2-boreholes, maximum drilled upto 50 ft
depth from the present NSL.

2. SUBSOIL STRATIFICATION

The subsoil strata is given as follows:-

BH-1
00.00 - 03.50 ft. = Loose borrow fill silty sand and debris.
03.50 - 10.00 ft. = Moderately plastic stiff clayey silt trace
kankers from 3.50 to 7 ft..
10.00 - 14.00 ft. = Low plastic stiff clayey silt trace sand.
14.00 - 18.00 ft. = Moderately plastic stiff clayey silt.
18.00 - 24.00 ft. = Low plastic stiff clayey silt trace sand.
24.00 - 36.00 ft. = Medium dense sandy silt.
36.00 - 38.00 ft. = Medium dense fine silty sand.
38.00 - 50.00 ft. = Medium dense fine sand trace silt.

BH-2

00.00 - 02.00 ft. = Loose borrow fill silty sand and debris.
02.00 - 03.50 ft. = Moderately plastic medium clayey silt.
03.50 - 09.00 ft. = Moderately plastic stiff clayey silt trace
kankers from 3.50 to 7 ft.
09.00 - 14.00 ft. = Low plastic stiff clayey silt trace sand.
14.00 - 17.00 ft. = Moderately plastic stiff clayey silt.
17.00 - 30.00 ft. = Medium dense sandy silt.
30.00 - 40.00 ft. = Medium dense fine silty sand.
40.00 - 50.00 ft. = Medium dense fine sand trace silt.

3. TYPE/DEPTH OF FOUNDATION & BEARING CAPACITY
Keeping in view the prevailing field conditions, the following type
and depth of foundation is suggested for the proposed structure:-
(i) FOR BOILER
Type = Raft foundation
Depth = 6 ft from present NSL
qa = cNc/f
where qa = net safe bearing capacity with 3 safety
factor.
c(cohesion) = Undrained shear strength and is equal to
½ qu ("avg qu" = 0.96 ton/sq.ft.)
therefore c = 0.96/2 = 0.48 tons/sq.ft.
Nc = Terzaghi’s bearing capacity factor of clay
depending upon shape of footing
= 7.5 minimum
f = 3 (safety factor)
Hence qa = 0.48 x 7.5/3
qa = 1.20 tons/sq.ft.

(i) FOR OTHER ALLIED STRUCTURES

Type = Individual Footing
Depth = 5 ft from present NSL
qa = cNc/f
where qa = net safe bearing capacity with 3 safety
factor.
c(cohesion) = Undrained shear strength and is equal to
½ qu ("min qu" = 0.90 ton/sq.ft.)
therefore c = 0.90/2 = 0.45 tons/sq.ft.
Nc = Terzaghi’s bearing capacity factor of clay
depending upon shape of footing
= 6.3 minimum
f = 3 (safety factor)
Hence qa = 0.45 x 6.3/3
qa = 0.945 tons/sq.ft.
