INTRODUCTION
First impressions are crucial in life, especially our professional lives. Smiling,
hand shaking, good eye contact and straight posture are all non-verbal signs that will
help us create an excellent first impression with our business acquaintance. There are
also other things that you could do and say that would reinforce this first impression
called small talk. Small talk is conversation about things that are not important, often
between people who do not know each other well. It can be said that, small talk is
polite conversation about things that are not important, often between people who
are meeting for the first time. Engaging in small talk creates a warm rapport between
us and our visitor in a very short period. However, we must choose our topic with
caution.

The aimed of this paper was analyzed a conversation video between the
manager, the visitor, and also the boss the company. This paper was analyzed the
performances included the transcription of the conversation, topic, small talks,
offering, content included the questions and answers, and also the gesture and
expression.

There are four strategies that’ll help you make small talk in any
situation.

First, ask open-ended questions. Most people enjoy talking about


themselves -- not only are we are our favorite subjects, but it’s also
easier to discuss yourself than something you know little about.
Think about it: Would you have a harder time speaking about 14th
century glass-blowing or your favorite book? Open-ended questions
generate an interesting, dynamic conversation and encourage the
person you’re speaking with to open up.
Second, practice active listening. It’s tempting to tune out occasionally,
but you’ll forge much stronger connections if you pay attention. The
other person will notice how engaged you seem. In addition, it’s
much easier to ask relevant questions and remember details to bring
up later if you’re not listening with one ear.
Third, put away your phone. We tend to pull out our phones when
we’re feeling uncomfortable or awkward in social situations, but
nothing will sabotage your conversational efforts more quickly. Few
people will approach you if you’re scrolling through your phone -- and
you’ll send a plain message to anyone you’re already talking to that
you’re not interested.
Fourth, show your enthusiasm. Small talk might not always be the
most stress-free activity. However, if you go into it with the right
attitude, you can actually have fun. View these conversations as
opportunities to learn more about other people. You never know
whom you’ll meet or what they’ll have to share -- so embrace the
chance it’ll be an amazing discussion.

t is important to know how to engage in small talk with clients because there will
often be times when you are not talking about business, but still want to engage in
conversation with your client. You may use small talk when:

 You are with someone and waiting for someone or something to arrive before you
begin to discuss work.
 You are trying to network and need an excuse to start talking to someone new.
The goal is to connect with your client.

What does it mean to connect with someone?

You do not have to become best friends with your colleagues or clients, but you
should come across as a likeable, trustworthy person. The best way to do that is by
connecting with people. “To connect” means to join two things together.

Transcription: Small Talk (Welcoming a Visitor)
 Sang Ayu as the visitor

Lelyana:: “With..with Miss Sayu right?”


Sangayu: “Yes, I’m.”
Lelyana: “I’m Lely. I’m the distribution manager of this company. Welcome to East
Cost Company. Have a sit please!”
Sangayu: “Yes, Thank you. Nice to meet you Lely.”
Lelyana: “Nice to meet you too. How was your flight?”
Sangayu: “It was quite good but, I lost my pocket.”
Lelyana: “Oh really? I’m sorry to hear that. But, do you enjoy your trip here?”
Sangayu: “Hmm.. Ya, I try to enjoy it. But, by the way, the flight company send me a
message that, our pocket will be send to my hotel this evening. So, ya.. I think yaa..”
Lelyana: “I hope so. Your pocket will be back to you. But, if you don’t mind, would
you tell me how is your company ruin?”
Sangayu: “Eeee..Actually, I am from Thailand. I think you already known about that.
So, I come here to attent the meeting with your company. I think, we can share ee or
maybe I want to know what is your company product so, I can, I mean our company
will learn from your company because your company is a big company, so ya like that.”
Lelyana: “Thank you for your appreciation. But, I’m so sorry the meeting will be
postpone for around fifty minutes.. fifteen minutes. So that, would you like to have
some tea or coffee?”
Sangayu: “Ee..I think a cup of tea will be nice..”
Lelyana:: “A cup of tea?”
Sangayu: “Ee because in this place is hot.”
Lelyana: “Ya it’s okay. Please wait a moment I will call the staff. Pardon, a cup a tea?”
Sangayu: “Ya..”
Lelyana: “With sugar or low sugar? (Calling the staff) A cup of tea with low sugar,
please! Okay.. ee.. by the way, emm..by the way..where do you stay?”
Sangayu: “I stay in Central hotel, It’s near from your office.”
Lelyana: “Really?”
Sangayu: “Ya..”
Lelyana: “Do you book by yourself? Or by your friends?”
Sangayu: “Ee..my company already booked it for me. So, I just come to the hotel and
ya enjoy the the facility.”
Lelyana:: “If you don’t mind, I have a cottage near this company…near our company.
If you have a time I will…I will..I invite you to come to my cottage. Because it will be
better if you stay in my cottage.”
Sangayu: “Thank you so much…”
Lelyana:: “It..it’s free for you because you are our special guest.”
Sangayu: “Ya..I..Thank you so much I really appreciate it but, I just for 2 days in this
place..”
Lelyana: “Oh todays.. today?”
Sangayu: “Ya today, I mean 2 days.”
Lelyana: “Oh 2 days..”
Sangayu: “Ya today is our one day meeting right?”
Lelyana: “Ya..”
Sangayu: “I just in this city for 2 days, I only booked the hotel for 2 days. So, I think
I can’t yaa go to your cottage. Maybe in our..in my next visit ee I can ee enjoy your
cottage.”
Lelyana: “Okay. This is the tea.”
Sangayu: “Thank you so much.”
Lelyana: “Do you like it?”
Sangayu: “Ehmm..ya.”
Lelyana: “I’m sorry my boss already came.”
Sangayu: “Really? Ya.”
Lelyana: “This is my boss. I’m sorry boss.”
Artha: “Hallo, Miss Sayu.”
Sangayu: “Hallo..”
Artha: “How do get it by here?”
Sangayu: “Ee.. I booked some Grab.”
Artha: “Grab? Alright. I’m sorry before because I Have another meeting.”
Sanagayu: “Ehmm.”
Artha: “Do you have a good trip?”
Sangayu: “Yeahh.. Quite good.”
Artha: “It is the first time you come to Japan to see my company?”
Sangayu: “What do you mean? Bali?”
Artha: “Ohh yes..is..this the first time you came to Bali?”
Sangayu: “Ya.. this is the first time I came to Bali. But, I hope I can enjoy my day in
Bali.”
Artha: “By the way, where do you live here?”
Sangayu: ”In Central Hotel..”
Artha: “Oh Central Hotel.”
Sangayu: “Ya near from your office.”
Artha: “Haa.. Do you already have your drink?”
Sangayu: “Yes, your manager ee is very nice.”
Artha: “Ouu is our company is ready to serve the guest ..ee..ready to serve the guest
and ee we are..we are focus on the serve. And..”
Sangayu: “Thank you for tour service. I really enjoy it.”
Artha: “Ee do, do you receive my email for the agendas of the meeting?”
Sangayu: “Yes.. I already read it. I think, it seems good. Maybe, I cannot want to
change the schedule, so I really.. I really, I mean, I agreed with what is..what is the ee..
I mean our agenda on your email. “
Artha: “Yeah it’s good. How long you stay here?”
Sangayu: “Ee onlt 2 days..”
Artha:” Oh 2 days..hehe”
Sangayu: “Yeah It’s not long. I hope I can enjoy.”
Artha: “Maybe we can arrange to.. I want to can eat with you to have trip around Bali
to visit interesting places around Bali yeah..”
Sangayu: “Really?”
Artha: “Yeah..”
Sangayu: “Thank you so much for your service and..but maybe is cannot..I mean I
cannot .. apa..”
Artha: “Spend more days?”
Sangayu: “Yes..I have limit..limited time in Bali..”
Artha: “Ohh..”
Sangayu: “Maybe not all of the places..yaa..Maybe one or two the most popular
places.”
Artha: “Ohh you are busy because….”

Sangayu: “Hello, good afternoon I am Miss Lisa Harada from the 1st International
Bank. I want to speak with Ms Mary Jenkins.”
Juniari: “Pardon me.”
Sangayu: “I want to speak to speak with Miss Mary Jenkins.”
Juniari: “Emm..I’m so sorry Miss..
Sangayu; “Hello?”
Juniari: ”Yes? Pardon me, with whom that I’m talking about?”
Sangayu: “I want to speak with Miss. Mary Jenkins.
Juniari: “May I know your name please?”
Sangayu: “Ooh my name is Lisa Harada from the 1st International Bank.”
Juniari: “Okay. I’m so sorry Ms. Harada. Miss Mary Jenkins is not in office for now
because she is away for a business.”
Sangayu: “Ohh..Ehm..How? May I leave a message for her?”
Juniari: “Yes of course.”
Sangayu: “Ehmm..I want you to tell her that her allowance application has been
approved. So, please tell her to call me later because I want to discuss the payment
schedule.”
Juniari: “Pardon me, would you like to repeat one again, please?”
Sangayu: “Emm..Okay. Please tell her to call me later because I want to inform her,
her allowance application later has been approved. So, I want to discuss the repayment
schedule with her. Is that clear enough for you?”
Juniari: “Okay, wait a moment.”
Sangayu: “Hello?”
Juniari: “Yes?” So, you want her to call you later. May I have your number please?”
Sangayu: “Sure. My phone number is 8129993344.”
Juniari: “Pardon me..”
Sangayu: “8129993344. Is it clear enough?”
Juniari: “Eee I would like to ee confirm your message.”
Sangayu: “Yeah..”
