ABSTRACT
The number of heavy metal sources in the nature has the potential to increase pollution, especially in waters that will
accumulate in the food chain. The presence of heavy metals with high concentrations exceeding standards such as Fe
metal is very harmful because it can not be decomposed by the body. The high levels of the Fe metal can be reduced by
using an adsorbent in the adsorption process. The adsorbent used in this research is a spherical chitosan-activated
carbon composite. The purpose of this research is to know the effects of activated carbon from rubber shell on the
chitosan-activated carbon composite and the adsorption time on the decrease of Fe metal concentration. Composites
were prepared by adding 1, 2, and 3 grams of activated carbon into 1% (w/v) chitosan solution then dropped into a 3%
Tripolyphosphate-Ethanol solution mixture. The adsorption process was carried out by adding 3 grams (wet basis) of
composite into an erlenmeyer containing 50 mL of artificial coal liquid waste. The samples were stirred using a shaker
with time variations of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 minutes at a speed of 150 rpm. The samples were filtered and then
analyzed using AAS. The results showed that the longer the adsorption time was and the less activated carbon added in
the composite, the more the decrease of Fe metal concentration gets. The best condition was obtained at variation of 1
gram of activated carbon addition with adsorption time of 25 minutes which can decrease 0.1236 mg Fe
metal for each gram composite.
