DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY WILMINGTON DISTRICT, CORPS OF ENGINEERS Fo 80x 80 wunererneren ro December 10, 2001 Honorable Mike Melntyre House of Representatives Washington, D.C. 20815-3307 Dear Mr. Metntyre: | would like to inform you that a Continuing Eligibility Inspection of White Oak Flood Control Project in Biaden and Pender Counties, North Carolina, performed in September 2001, revealed maintenance deficiencies in the following areas: Unwanted vegetation ~ medium to heavy growth of tres on slopes, bb. Encroachment ~ dike has been breached in several areas by logging operations . Revetment banks ~ scour atthe toe of dike from backflow at Natmore Creek. As a result, the project was rated as Unacceptable and elasified as Inactive inthe Federal Rehabilitation and Inspection Program. The local sponsor, Lyons Swamp Drainage and Levee District, was notified ofthis by letter dated October 18, 2001 (copy attached). ‘The sponsor requested a public meeting to discuss the inspection results. Corps representatives met with the sponsor and members of the community on November 21, 2001. The sponsor indicated their intention to correct the noted deficiencies in order for the project 1 be reclassified in an Active status, Costs fo the deferred maintenance is their greatest challenge ‘The Wilmington District is working with the sponsor to assist in any way within federal regulation to accomplish this effort.
