Here is a quick look at the match-

CLASS 6A: FARRAGUT (11-1)
AT MARYVILLE (11-1)
This has the makings of the best
game in the state.
Like Maryville, Farragut has
been mostly dominant all season.
The Admirals have been tested
a few times, too, and won two of
first two rounds of this year’s
playoffs.
Comparing those scores to the
games Maryville played against
those teams in the regular sea-
son possibly provides a glimpse
of what could be the difference
on Friday — defense.
Maryville scored 42 points in
both games against Cleveland and
Ooltewah and allowed seven. The
Rebels’ defense has been strong
in the playoffs, too. They have
allowed seven points apiece to
Bearden and Science Hill.
This is a rematch of last
year’s second-round game that
Maryville won, 38-6.
that Alcoa won, 31-8, in the last
week of the regular season.
Except for their thriller against
Maryville, that game was the closest
the Tornadoes played this season.
Alcoa never trailed, but the fact it
didn’t score a touchdown until the
midway point of the second quar-
ter was enough to make a headline.
Alcoa has returned to its usual
dominant performances with a
pair of 56-0 victories in the first
two rounds of the playoffs.
Austin-East has steamrolled both
of its playoff opponents, too. The
Roadrunners have won seven of
eight games since a loss to Class
5A Fulton in early September.

Coalfield showed some moxie
in its second-round victory over
Cloudland. The Yellowjackets
scored two touchdowns in the
final five minutes, including one
with 23.2 seconds remaining for
a 29-24 victory.
This is the third consecutive
season Greenback and Coalfield
will meet in the quarterfinals.
Greenback won last year’s play-
off game, 56-34, after also win-
ning the regular season match-
up, 34-33. In 2016, Greenback beat
Coalfield, 42-27, in the regular
season and again, 28-21, in the
quarterfinals.

The Scots did not win any
corner kicks either.
Kenyon (17-1-2) outshot
Maryville, 17-4. Twelve of
its shots came in the sec-
ond half.
Kenyon didn’t need a shot
to take the lead in the fifth
minute. A cross from the
left side got hit into the net
by a Maryville player.
Though Maryville’s attack
did not generate many
chances, it stayed within
striking distance until the
53rd minute when Ken-
yon’s Max Taylor scored
on a deflected shot to make
it, 2-0.
Kenyon scored again in
the 80th minute on a header
from the center of the box.
Maryville goalkeeper
Ryan Jorgensen made five
saves in the second half and
six overall.
Maryville’s Chris Fernan-
dez, Austin Vinyard, Ran-
dy Reichenberger and Kai
Miettinen were credited
with one shot apiece.

No. 4 team cheated in
last weekend’s victory at

Jimmy Butler has his wish:
He’s out of Minnesota.
And just like that, Phila-
delphia has a new Big Three
— one that could make seri-
ous noise in the Eastern
Conference.
A person with knowl-
edge of the situation said
Saturday that Butler is
being traded to the 76ers
in a package that will send
Dario Saric and Robert
Covington to the Timber-
wolves. The person spoke
to The Associated Press
on condition of anonym-
ity because the trade had
not yet been announced by
either team and was still
pending NBA approval,
which is not expected until
Monday.
Justin Patton will also be
sent to Philadelphia, and
Jerryd Bayless and a 2022
second-round pick are also
going to Minnesota, the per-
son said.
The Athletic first reported
the agreement.
Philadelphia will become
Butler’s third team, after Chi-
cago and Minnesota. He’s a
career 16.5 point-per-game
scorer, though that is skewed
by his first two seasons that
were very meager on the
scoring front. He’s on pace
this season to average at least
20 points for the fifth con-
secutive year.

KNOXVILLE — Four
freshmen on the Tennessee
women’s basketball team
got a taste of what it’s like
playing at the collegiate
level last week.
The fourth-ranked sign-
ing class excelled in its
first test – an exhibition
game against Carson-
Newman in which the
freshmen combined for
67 points en route to 128-
59 victory.
“It just helped us a lot,”
said Tennessee freshman
Mimi Collins, who con-
tributed 16 of those points.
“Especially as freshmen,
we get to see how college
is, and we can see the com-
petition.”
On Sunday, the young
Lady Vols’ squad will have
its chance to impress again.
Only this time, the stakes
will be higher as Tennessee
takes on Presbyterian in its
season opener at 2 p.m. at
Thompson-Boling Arena.
The Lady Vols are 40-4
in season openers over the
past 44 years.
It’s the first meeting
between the two schools,
and Tennessee coach Holly
Warlick has made it clear
she isn’t going to shy away
from playing the newcom-
ers, Collins, Zaay Green,
Rae Burrell and Jazmine
Massengill.
“I recruited them to play,”
Warlick said. “They’re
coming along. They’re
going to make mistakes,
yes, but the only way they
can learn is to get out
there, and I’m going to
play them.”
Tennessee will also need
its bench to sustain its up-
tempo style of play, which
was on display against Car-
son-Newman. Tennessee’s
128 points was the fourth-
most points scored by any
Lady Vols team in an exhi-
bition game.
“We’re running, we’re
pressing, and it takes a lot
out of you,” Warlick said.
“So I’m going to play a lot
of people.”
The team is young, with
seven of the Lady Vols’ 10
active players either fresh-
men or sophomores. The
only three returning start-
ers from last year include
senior guard Meme Jack-
son and sophomores Ren-
nia Davis and Evina West-
brook.
What the team lacks in
experience, Warlick said it
makes up for in chemistry.
“Just in their excitement,
seeing how they’re excited
for each other,” Warlick
said, referring to the Car-
son-Newman game. “Not
so much when they do
something for themselves,
but when Zaay Green
blocks a shot, they’re all
going crazy. When some-
one makes a three, they’re
all going crazy. And that’s
what makes it fun.”
As for Presbyterian,
Warlick said she expects
the guards to shoot threes
and spread the floor. The
Blue Hose are coming off
a 65-47 win over Augusta
in last week’s exhibition
game in which Presbyte-
rian guard Shamani Staf-
ford scored a game-high
18 points.
“Our bigs are going to
have to come out and play,”
Warlick said. “I haven’t
seen film on them, but I
know what they did in their
exhibition game, so we’ve
just got to go out and get
our feet wet and just kind
of adjust as the game goes
on.”
As for who will provide
the Lady Vols’ with an
inside presence, Cheridene
Green, Kasiyahna Kush-
kituah, Mimi Collins and
Kamera Harris will look to
fill the shoes of Mercedes
Russell, who went on to
play in the WNBA after
last season.
“(We) really want to
continue on our intensity,
take great shots and stay
focused — those three
things,” Warlick said. “I
thought our exhibition
game was great for us. We
played a lot of people, and
we’re going to play a lot of
people but really, for the
most part, I’m pleased with
those three things.
“... But we’ve got to con-
tinue to get better.”

vick has won nine times
previously, including this
year — a week after a
different No. 4 Ford was
found to be illegal follow-
ing a victory. This track
was critical in Harvick’s
run to his first title four
years ago when he had to
win, and did, at Phoenix to
advance to the champion-
ship round.
A win isn’t required Sun-
day, and Harvick needs
only to avoid any on-track
issues to secure his tick-
et at Homestead-Miami
Speedway.
Only a quiet Sunday
drive is not Harvick’s style.
He arrived in Phoenix
without his crew chief and
car chief, both suspended
for the final two races of
the season . The berth he’d
earned into the final four
by winning last week at
Texas had been stripped
away as punishment by
NASCAR. His team has
been branded a cheat.
The situation is less than
ideal, and Harvick is dis-
interested in discussing
the penalty or the plight of
his race team. He’s instead
letting his performance
speak for itself.
He went out and won
the pole.
Then he was fastest in
both of Saturday’s practices.
It’s quite clear Harvick
but the points deduction
left him only three points
above the cutline.
Lurking right behind him
is teammate Kurt Busch,
who recognized the oppor-
tunity Harvick’s penalty
opened for the last driver to
win the Cup title in a Ford.
“This week with the pen-
alty, it’s like we won two
stages without even fir-
ing up the engine on our
car,” said Busch, cham-
pion in 2004 in the first
year of NASCAR’s playoff
system. “Now we’re equal
and the job now is to get
stage one, stage two and
to see how things pan out
for the end of the race. We
know our job is going to be
tough, but we just have to
go after it.”
While Harvick was lay-
ing the groundwork for a
rout on Sunday, his com-
petition was preparing for
an intense push for those
final three berths. Among
the drivers who haven’t
qualified for Homestead
are Kyle Busch and reign-
ing series champion Mar-
tin Truex Jr., who stood
by his car and watched as
it took his team four tries
to pass pre-qualifying
inspection. Kyle Busch,
Truex and Harvick were
NASCAR’s so-called Big
Three this year as they
dominated the regular sea-
son yet none are guaran-
teed to race for the title.
So it left Logano as the
only relaxed driver and
feeling mighty confident
about his title chances.
