PREFACE Allah mentions to us in the Holy Qur’an, “And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is over all things competent. Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding-who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], “Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” (Qur’an chapter 3 verses 189-191) Now here in these verses, Allah draws our attention to the creation of the heavens and earth, the alternation of the night and the day, the creation of the universe. HE calls our attention to their creation and their precision, and mentions those who contemplate the wonders of creation and realize that this was not created for any foolish purpose, [that Allah is exalted above doing such a thing] and they seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of Hell. Truly, when you see the design of all that Allah created, you realize it is very powerful and very precise. Something very powerful and very precise; something beyond your own calculation and imagination, cannot be foolish. It cannot be just “thrown together”. There are many examples of things that happen by chance. Let me offer one situation. If you took ten colored marbles, then numbered them one to ten and you put them inside a bag. Next, you shook that bag to mix them up. Then, closing your eyes and reaching into the bag, you tried to pull out the marbles in order-1 to 10. What is the chance of pulling out the marbles in order? Do you know what the chances are? It is twenty six million to one (26,000,000 to 1). And this is something within our ability to do. So now I ask you, what is the chance that the heavens and the earth just came together as they are [with the exact precision and orchestration in their existence]?

My dear respected brothers and sisters, we have to ask ourselves a further question. When you see a bridge, a building or an automobile, you automatically consider the person or company that constructed it. When you see a large ship, an airplane, a rocket, a satellite; you also think about how incredible it is. [You know by its design who the maker is.] When you see a super international airport, nuclear plant or an orbiting space station you have to be thoroughly impressed with the engineering dynamics that are involved. Yet, these are just things that are manufactured by human beings. So what about the human body with its massive and intricate control systems? Think about it. Think about the brain: how it thinks, functions, analyzes, retrieves and stores information, as well as distinguishes and categorizes information in a millionth of a second, all of this constantly. Think about the brain for a moment. (And don’t forget the fact that you are using your brain to consider itself!) This is the brain that made the automobile, the rocket ships, the boats, and so on. Think about the brain and who made that! Think about the heart. Think about how it pumps continuously for sixty or seventy years [taking in and discharging blood throughout the body] maintaining steady precision throughout the life of the person. Think about the kidneys and the liver and the various functions they perform. The purifying instruments of the body that perform hundreds of chemical analyses simultaneously and also controls the level of toxicity in the content of the body. All of these are done automatically. Think about your eyes, the human cameras, that adjust, focus, interpret, evaluate, discern color automatically, naturally receiving and adjusting to light and distance. Think about it-Who created them? Who has mastered their design and function? Who plans and regulates their function? Human beings do this? No, of course not. What about this universe? Think about this. This earth is one planet in our solar system, and our solar system is one [of possible many] solar systems. Our galaxy, The Milky Way, is one of the galaxies. There are ONE HUNDRED MILLION GALAXIES in the universe.

They are all in order and they are all precise. They are not colliding with each other. They are not conflicting with on another. They are swimming along in an orbit that has been set for them. Did human beings set that into motion and are human beings maintaining that precision? No, of course not. Think about the oceans, the fish, the insects, the birds, the plants, bacteria, and chemical elements that have not yet been discovered and cannot be detected even with the most sophisticated instruments. Yet each of them has a law that they follow. Did all of this synchronization, balance, harmony, variation, design, maintenance, operation and infinite numeration happen all by chance? Do these things function perfectly and perpetually also by chance? No, of course not. That would be totally illogical and foolish. In the least, it indicates that however it came to exist-it exists beyond the realm of human capability. We will all agree to that. The Being, The Almighty Power, God, The Creator who has the knowledge to design and proportion crated all of this and is responsible for maintaining it. HE is the only one that deserves praise and gratitude. If I were to give you one hundred dollars for no reason, you would at least say thank you. What about your eyes, your kidneys, your brain, your children, and your life: Who gave you all of that? Is He not worthy of praise and thanks? Is He not worthy of your worship and recognition? This book helps us to recognize The Only True Creator, to be grateful to Him, to worship Him, to surrender ourselves to Him and to obey the laws that He has determined for us.

slam is the religion perfected and chosen by God to the entire mankind. Allah ( ) is the Lord of the entire Universe, and He has entrusted the Muslims with the duty of conveying His message to all mankind. The Arabic word Daa’wah means a call or an invitation. In Islamic context, it means to strive for the propagation of Islam. The Glorious Qur’an says: “Ah! Who is more unjust than those who conceal the testimony they have from Allah? But Allah is not unmindful of what ye do!”[Qur’an chapter 2 verse 140]

It is the duty of every Muslim to convey the truth with wisdom, gentleness and to reason with that which is best. In order to convey the message of Islam, dialogue and debate become inevitable, Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Invite to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and best advice, and reason with them, if you have to, in the most courteous manner: for your Lord knows best who strays from His Way and He knows best who is rightly guided.” (Qur’an chapter 16 verse 125) Ever since the dawn of human life on this planet, Man has always sought to understand Nature, his own place in the scheme of Creation and the purpose of Life itself. In this quest for Truth, spanning many centuries and diverse civilizations, organized religion has shaped human life and determined to a large extent, the course of history. While some religions have been based on books, claimed by their adherents to be divinely inspired, others have relied solely on human experience.

Choice is Yours Al-Qur’an, the main source of the Islamic faith, is a book believed by Muslims, to be of completely Divine origin. Muslims also believe that it contains guidance for all mankind. Since the message of the Qur’an is believed to be for all times, its message is relevant to every age. A book, claiming Divine origin, is in effect, claiming to be a miracle. Such a claim should be easily verifiable in any age, according to the standards of that age. Muslims believe that the Qur’an is the last and final revelation of God, the miracle of miracles revealed as guidance to mankind. Let us therefore investigate the veracity of this belief.

ur’an is believed to be the word of God which He revealed to the unlettered (person who can neither read nor write) Prophet Muhammad ( ) about 1425 years ago, so that it could serve as a light and guidance for all creatures until the Day of Judgement. It is an incontrovertible historical truth that the text of the Holy Qur’an extant today is, syllable for syllable, exactly the same as the Holy Prophet ( ) had offered to the world as the Word of God. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Surely We have revealed this reminder (The Qur’an); and We will surely preserve it Ourself.” (Qur’an chapter 15 verse 9) Ever since the time of the Prophet ( ) till now there have been millions of Muslims who have memorized the complete Qur’an by heart. Even in countries like India there are thousands of Muslims starting from the age of six who know the complete Qur’an by heart, though their mother tongue is not Arabic language. Allah ( ) has made the Qur’an easy to remember and has preserved it in the hearts of the believers. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “And in truth We have made the Qur’an easy to remember...” (Qur’an chapter 54 verse 40)

[Sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad ( )]

llah ( ) sent His guidance with His messenger Muhammad ( ). We must worship Allah ( ) by following the way (Sunnah) of His messenger Muhammad ( ). This is the meaning of the shahaadah (testimony) that every Muslim says: Laa i laaha illallaahu Muhammadduur rasoolullah

This testimony means that no one deserves to be worshipped besides Allah ( ), and that we may only worship Allah ( ) the way that He taught us – by means of His messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him). When we follow and obey Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), we would be truly obeying Allah ( ). Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Anyone who obeys the Rasool (messenger), in fact, obeys Allah.” (Qur’an chapter 4 verse 80) Prophet Muhammad’s ( ) actions and explanations are a source of guidance forever. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “And now We have sent down the reminder to you (O Muhammad), so that you may explain clearly to mankind as to what was sent to them so that they may think about it.” (Qur’an chapter 16 verse 44) His sayings, actions, practices and explanations are a source of light for every Muslim in every age. They are preserved in the form of Sahih Hadeeth. The Hadeeth book Sahih al Bukhaari and Sahih Muslim are considered to be the most authentic sources.

here was a time, in the history of world civilizations, when ‘miracles’, or what was perceived to be a miracle, took precedence over human reason and logic. But how do we define the term ‘miracle’? A miracle is anything that takes place out of the normal course of life and for which humankind has no explanation. However, we must be careful before we accept something as a miracle. An article in ‘The Times of India’ Mumbai, in 1993 reported that ‘a saint’ by the name ‘Baba Pilot’ claimed to have stayed continuously submerged under water in a tank for three consecutive days and nights. However, when reporters wanted to examine the base of the tank of water where he claimed to have performed this ‘miraculous’ feat, he refused to let them do so. He argued by asking as to how one could examine the womb of a mother that gives birth to a child. The ‘Baba’ was hiding something. It was a gimmick simply to gain publicity. Surely, no modern man with even the slightest inkling towards rational thinking would accept such a ‘miracle’. If such false miracles are the tests of divinity, then we would have to accept Mr. P. C. Sorcar, the world famous magician known for his ingenious magical tricks and illusions, as the best God-man. The Qur’an is not a book of science but a book of ‘signs’, i.e. aayaats. There are more than six thousand ‘signs’ in the Qur’an of which more than a thousand deal with science. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Do they not consider the Qur’an (with care)? Had it been from other than Allah they would surely have found therein much discrepancy.” (Qur’an chapter 4 verse 82) Allah ( ) says, had the Qur’an been revealed by other than the Creator there would have been many contradictions. All praise be to the Lord, there is not a single contradiction in the Qur’an. We all know that many a times Science takes 14

The creation of the universe is explained by astrophysicists in a widely accepted phenomenon, popularly known as the ‘Big Bang’. It is supported by observational and experimental data gathered by astronomers and astrophysicists for decades. According to the ‘Big Bang’, the whole universe was initially one big mass (Primary Nebula). Then there was a ‘Big Bang’ (Secondary Separation) which resulted in the formation of Galaxies. These then divided to form stars, planets, the sun, the moon, etc. The origin of the universe was unique and the probability of it occurring by ‘chance’ is zero. The Qur’an contains the following verse, regarding the origin of the universe: “Do not the Unbelievers see That the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one Unit of Creation), before We clove them asunder?” (Qur’an chapter 21 verse 30) The striking congruence between the Qur’anic verse and the ‘Big Bang’ is inescapable! How could a book, which first appeared in the deserts of Arabia 1425 years ago, contain this profound scientific truth? Who could be the author of the Qur’an?

cientists say that before the galaxies in the universe were formed, celestial matter was initially in the form of gaseous matter. In short, huge gaseous matter or clouds were present before the formation of the galaxies. To describe initial celestial matter, the word ‘smoke’ is more appropriate than gas. The following Qur’anic verse refers to this state of the universe by the word dhukhan which means smoke. “Moreover, He Comprehended In His design the sky, And it had been (as) smoke: He said to it And to the earth: ‘Come ye together, Willingly or unwillingly.’ They said: ‘We do come (Together), in willing obedience.’ ” (Qur’an chapter 41 verse 11) Again, this fact is a corollary to the ‘Big Bang’ and was not known to the Arabs during the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). What then, could have been the source of this knowledge?

n early times, people believed that the earth is flat. For centuries, men were afraid to venture out too far, lest they should fall off the edge. Sir Francis Drake was the first person who proved that the earth is spherical when he sailed around it in 1597. Consider the following Qur’anic verse regarding the alternation of day and night: “Seest thou not that Allah merges Night into Day And He merges Day into Night?” (Qur’an chapter 31 verse 29) Merging here means that the night slowly and gradually changes to day and vice versa. This phenomenon can only take place if the earth is spherical. If the earth was flat, there would have been a sudden change from night to day and from day to night. The following verse also alludes to the spherical shape of the earth: “He created the heavens And the earth In true (proportions): He makes the Night Overlap the Day, and the Day Overlap the Night.” (Qur’an chapter 39 verse 5) The Arabic word used here is Kawwara meaning ‘to overlap’ or ‘to coil’– the way a turban is wound around the head. The overlapping or coiling of the day and night can only take place if the earth is spherical. The earth is not exactly round like a ball, but geo-spherical i.e. it is flattened at the poles. The following verse contains a description of the earth’s shape: “And the earth, moreover, Hath He made egg shaped.” (Al-Qur’aan chapter 79 verse 30)
Ostrich egg

The Arabic word for egg here is dahaha, which means an ostrich-egg. The shape of an ostrich-egg resembles the geo-spherical

Choice is Yours shape of the earth. Thus the Qur’aan correctly describes the shape of the earth, though the prevalent notion when the Qur’aan was revealed was that the earth is flat.

For a long time European philosophers and scientists believed that the earth stood still in the centre of the universe and every other body including the sun moved around it. In the West, this geocentric concept of the universe was prevalent right from the time of Ptolemy in the second century B.C. In 1512, Nicholas Copernicus put forward his Heliocentric Theory of Planetary Motion, which asserted that the sun is motionless at the centre of the solar system with the planets revolving around it. In 1609, the German scientist Yohannus Keppler published the ‘Astronomia Nova’. In this he concluded that not only do the planets move in elliptical orbits around the sun, they also rotate upon their axes at irregular speeds. With this knowledge it became possible for European scientists to explain correctly many of the mechanisms of the solar system including the sequence of night and day. After these discoveries, it was thought that the Sun was stationary and did not rotate about its axis like the Earth. Consider the following Qur’anic verse: “It is He Who created The Night and the Day, And the sun and the moon: All (the celestial bodies) Swim along, each in its Rounded course.” (Qur’an chapter 21 verse 33) The Arabic word used in the above verse is yasbahûn . The word yasbahûn is derived from the word sabaha. It carries with it the idea of motion that comes from any moving body. If you use the word for a man on the ground, it would not mean that he is rolling but would mean he is walking or running. If you use the word for a man in water, it would not mean that he is floating but would mean that he is swimming. Similarly, if you use the word yasbah for a celestial body such as the sun, it would not mean that it is only flying through space but 22

Choice is Yours would mean that it is also rotating as it goes through space. Most of the school text books have incorporated the fact that the sun rotates about its axis. The rotation of the sun about its own axis can be proved with the help of an equipment that projects the image of the sun on the table top so that one can examine the image of the sun without being blinded. It is noticed that the sun has spots which complete a circular motion once every 25 days i.e. the sun takes approximately 25 days to rotate around its axis. In fact, the sun travels through space at roughly 150 miles per second, and takes about 200 million years to complete one revolution around the center of our Milky Way Galaxy. “It is not permitted To the Sun to catch up The Moon, nor can The Night outstrip the Day: Each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (According to Law).” (Qur’an chapter 36 verse 40) This verse mentions an essential fact discovered by modern astronomy, i.e. the existence of the individual orbits of the Sun and the Moon, and their journey through space with their own motion. The ‘fixed place’ towards, which the sun travels, carrying with it the solar system, has been located exactly by modern astronomy. It has been given a name, the Solar Apex. The solar system is indeed moving in space towards a point situated in the constellation of Hercules (Alpha Layer) whose exact

Choice is Yours location is firmly established. The moon rotates around its axis in the same duration that it takes to revolve around the earth. It takes approximately 29½ days to complete one rotation. One cannot help but be amazed at the scientific accuracy of the Qur’anic verses. Should we not ponder over the question: “What was the source of knowledge contained in the Qur’an?”

Consider the following Qur’anic verses: “He has let free the two bodies Of flowing water, Meeting together: Between them is a Barrier Which they do not transgress.” (Qur’an chapter 55 verses19-20) In the Arabic text the word barzakh means a barrier or a partition. This barrier is not a physical partition. The Arabic word maraja literally means ‘they both meet and mix with each other’. Early commentators of the Qur’an were unable to explain the two opposite meanings for the two bodies of water, i.e. they meet and mix, and at the same time, there is a barrier between them. Modern Science has discovered that in the places where two different seas meet, there is a barrier between them. This barrier divides the two seas so that each sea has its own temperature, salinity and density. 7 Oceanologists are now in a better position to explain this verse. There is a slanted unseen water barrier between the two seas through which water from one sea passes to the other. But when the water from one sea enters the other sea, it loses its distinctive characteristic and becomes homogenized with the other water. In a way this barrier serves as a transitional homogenizing area for the two waters. This scientific phenomenon mentioned in the Qur’an was also confirmed by Dr. William Hay who is a well-known marine scientist and Professor of Geological Sciences at the University of Colorado, 25

Choice is Yours U.S.A. The Qur’an mentions this phenomenon also in the following verse: “And made a separating bar between the two bodies Of flowing water?” (Qur’an chapter 27 verse 61) This phenomenon occurs in several places, including the divider between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean at Gibralter. But when the Qur’an speaks about the divider between fresh and salt water, it mentions the existence of “a forbidding partition” with the barrier. “It is He Who has Let free the two bodies Of flowing water: One palatable and sweet, And the other salty and bitter; Yet has He Made a barrier between them, And a partition that is forbidden To be passed.” (Qur’an chapter 25 verse 53) Modern science has discovered that in estuaries, where fresh (sweet) and saltwater meet, the situation is somewhat different from that found in places where two seas meet. It has been discovered that what distinguishes fresh water from salt water in estuaries is a “pycnocline zone with a marked density discontinuity separating the two layers.” This partition (zone of separation) has salinity different from both the fresh water and the salt water. This phenomenon occurs in several places, including Egypt, where the river Nile flows into the Mediterranean Sea.

n Geology, the phenomenon of ‘folding’ is a recently discovered fact. Folding is responsible for the formation of mountain ranges. The earth’s crust, on which we live, is like a solid shell, while the deeper layers are hot and fluid, and thus inhospitable to any form of life. It is also known that the stability of the mountains is linked to the phenomenon of folding, for it was the folds that were to provide foundations for the reliefs that constitute the mountains. Geologists tell us that the radius of the Earth is about 3,750 miles and the crust on which we live is very thin, ranging between 1 to 30 miles. Since the crust is thin, it has a high possibility of shaking. Mountains act like stakes or tent pegs that hold the earth’s crust and give it stability. The Qur’aan contains exactly such a description in the following verse: “Have We not made The earth as a wide Expanse, And the mountains as pegs?” (Qur’an chapter 78 verses 6-7) The word awtad means stakes or pegs (like those used to anchor a tent); they are the deep foundations of geological folds. A book named ‘Earth’ is considered as a basic reference textbook on geology in many universities around the world. One of the authors of this book is Frank Press, who was the President of the Academy of Sciences in the USA for 12 years and was the Science Advisor to former US President Jimmy Carter. In this book he illustrates the mountain in a wedgeshape and the mountain itself as a small part of the whole, whose root is deeply entrenched in the ground.

Choice is Yours According to Dr. Press, the mountains play an important role in stabilizing the crust of the earth. The Qur’aan clearly mentions the function of the mountains in preventing the earth from shaking: “And We have set on the earth Mountains standing firm, Lest it should shake with them.” (Qur’an chapter 21 verse 31) The Qur’aanic descriptions are in perfect agreement with modern geological data.

he surface of the earth is broken into many rigid plates that are about 100 km in thickness. These plates float on a partially molten region called aesthenosphere. Mountain formations occur at the boundary of the plates. The earth’s crust is 5 km thick below oceans, about 35 km thick below flat continental surfaces and almost 80 km thick below great mountain ranges. These are the strong foundations on which mountains stand. The Qur’aan also speaks about the strong mountain foundations in the following verse: “And the mountains Hath He firmly fixed.” (Qur’an chapter 79 verse 32) A similar message is contained in the Qur’an in 88:19, 31:10 and 16:15

n the Qur’an, Allah ( ) reveals the creation of the human. The first human being was created by Allah ( ) shaping clay into human form and breathing a soul into it: Your Lord said to the angels, “I am going to create a human being out of clay. When I have formed him and breathed My Spirit into him, fall down in prostration to him!” (Qur’an chapter 38 verses 71-72) “Then inquire of them: Is it they who are stronger in structure or other things We have created? We created them from sticky clay.” (Qur’an chapter 37 verses 11) When the human body is examined today, it may be discovered that many elements present on the earth are also to be found in the body. Living tissues contain 95% carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur, with a total of 26 different elements.

In another verse of the Qur’an Allah ( ) says: “We created man from an extract of clay.” (Qur’an chapter 23 verse 12) The Arabic word “sulala”, translated as “extract” in the verse, means “representative example, essence.” As we have seen, the information revealed in the Qur’an 1,425 years ago confirms what modern science tells us-the fact that the same elements are employed in human creation as those found in the soil.

We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?” (Qur’an chapter 21 verse 30) Only after advances have been made in science, do we now know that cytoplasm, the basic substance of the cell is made up of 80% water. Modern research has also revealed that most organisms consist of 50% to 90% water and that every living entity requires water for its existence. Was it possible 14 centuries ago for any human-being to guess that every living being was made of water? Moreover would such a guess be conceivable by a human being in the deserts of Arabia where there has always been scarcity of water? “And fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two.” (Qur’an chapter 13 verse 3) Fruit is the end product of reproduction of the superior plants. The stage preceding fruit is the flower, which has male and female organs (stamens and ovules). Once pollen has been carried to the flower, they bear fruit, which in turn matures and frees its seed. All fruits therefore imply the existence of male and female organs; a fact that is mentioned in the Qur’an. In certain species, fruit can come from non-fertilized flowers (parthenocarpic fruit) e.g. bananas, certain types of pineapple, fig, orange, vine, etc. They also have definite sexual characteristics.

It may also be referring to a phenomenon like electricity in which the atoms consist of negatively – and positively – charged electrons and protons. “Glory to Allah, Who created in pairs all things that The earth produces, as well as Their own (human) kind And (other) things of which They have no knowledge.” (Qur’an chapter 36 verse 36) The Qur’an here says that everything is created in pairs, including things that the humans do not know at present and may discover later.

“Now let man but think from what he is created! He is created from A drop emitted - Proceeding from between The back bone and the ribs.” (Qur’an chapter 86 verses 5-7) In embryonic stages, the reproductive organs of the male and female, i.e. the testicles and the ovaries, begin their development near the kidney between the spinal column and the eleventh and twelfth ribs. Later they descend; the female gonads (ovaries) stop in the pelvis while the male gonads (testicles) continue their descent before birth to reach the scrotum through the inguinal canal. Even in the adult after the descent of the reproductive organ, these organs receive their nerve supply and blood supply from the Abdominal Aorta, which is in the area between the backbone (spinal column) and the ribs. Even the lymphatic drainage and the venous return goes to the same area. Refer to (Qur’an and Modern Science-Compatible or Incompatible? – by Dr. Zakir Naik) for more details concerning embryology mentioned in the Qur’an.

onsider the following Qur’aanic verse: “And before Solomon were marshaled His hosts – of Jinns and men And birds, and they were all Kept in order and ranks. “At length, when they came To a (lowly) valley of ants, One of the ants said: ‘O ye ants, get into Your habitations, lest Solomon And his hosts crush you (Under foot) without knowing it.’” (Qur’an chapter 27 verses 17-18)

In the past, some people would have probably mocked at the Qur’aan, taking it to be a fairy tale book in which ants talk to each other and communicate sophisticated messages. In recent times, research has shown us several facts about the lifestyle of ants, which were not known earlier to humankind. Research has shown that the animals or insects whose lifestyle is closest in resemblance to the lifestyle of human beings are the ants. This can be seen from the following findings regarding ants: (a) The ants bury their dead in a manner similar to the humans. (b) They have a sophisticated system of division of labour, whereby they have managers, supervisors, foremen, workers, etc. (c) Once in a while they meet among themselves to have a ‘chat’. (d) They have an advanced method of communication among themselves. (e) They hold regular markets wherein they exchange goods. (f ) They store grains for long periods in winter and if the grain begins to bud, they cut the roots, as if they understand that if 37

Choice is Yours they leave it to grow, it will rot. If the grains stored by them get wet due to rains, they take these grains out into the sunlight to dry, and once these are dry, they take them back inside as though they know that humidity will cause development of root systems and thereafter rotting of the grain.

“Does man think that We Cannot assemble his bones? Nay, We are able to put Together in perfect order The very tips of his fingers.” (Qur’an chapter 75 verses 3-4) Unbelievers argue regarding resurrection taking place after bones of dead people have disintegrated in the earth and how each individual would be identified on the Day of Judgment. Almighty Allah ( ) answers that He can not only assemble our bones but can also reconstruct perfectly our very fingertips. Why does the Qur’an, while speaking about determination of the identity of the individual, speak specifically about fingertips? In 1880, fingerprinting became the scientific method of identification, after research done by Sir Francis Golt. No two persons in the world can ever have exactly the same fingerprint pattern. That is the reason why police forces worldwide use fingerprints to identify the criminal. 1425 years ago, who could have known the uniqueness of each human’s fingerprint? Surely it could have been none other than the Creator Himself!

t was thought that the sense of feeling and pain was only dependent on the brain. Recent discoveries prove that there are pain receptors present in the skin without which a person would not be able to feel pain. When a doctor examines a patient suffering from burn injuries, he verifies the degree of burns by a pinprick. If the patient feels pain, the doctor is happy, because it indicates that the burns are superficial and the pain receptors are intact. On the other hand if the patient does not feel any pain, it indicates that it is a deep burn and the pain receptors have been destroyed. The Qur’an gives an indication of the existence of pain receptors in the following verse:

“Those who reject Our signs, We shall soon Cast into the Fire; As often as their skins Are roasted through, We shall change them For fresh skins, That they may taste The Penalty: for Allah Is Exalted in Power, Wise.” (Qur’an chapter 4 verse 56) Prof. Tagatat Tejasen, Chairman of the Department of Anatomy at Chiang Mai University in Thailand, has spent a great amount of time on research of pain receptors. Initially he could not believe that the Qur’an mentioned this scientific 40

Choice is Yours fact 1,425 years ago. He later verified the translation of this particular Qur’anic verse. Prof. Tejasen was so impressed by the scientific accuracy of the Qur’anic verse, that at the 8th Saudi Medical Conference held in Riyadh on the Scientific Signs of Qur’an and Sunnah, he proclaimed in public: “There is no God but Allah ( ) and Muhammad ( ) is His Messenger.” There are more than a thousand aayaats in the Glorious Qur’an, containing scientific facts (Refer to Qur’an and Modern Science-Compatible or Incompatible?) Many facts mentioned in the Qur’an have been discovered in the last few centuries. But Science has not advanced to a level where it can confirm every statement of the Qur’an. Science makes no categorical statement, since it has no advance to a level, where it can either prove or disprove the other statements mentioned in the Qur’an. The existence of the hereafter, which is mentioned in the Qur’an, falls in the portion where science has no answer. If one is waiting to see all that is mentioned in the Qur’an and then embraces Islam then that will not do good to a person to believe then, if he believed not before, nor earned good (by deeds of righteousness) through its Faith. Allah ( ) says: “Are they waiting for the angels or your Rabb to come down to them or are they waiting to be given a certain sign of your Rabb! On the Day when that certain sign of your Rabb appears, the belief will not profit that soul which did not believe before, or who, while professing to believe did not do good deeds”. Say to them: “Wait if you will; we too are waiting.” (Qur’aan chapter 6 verse 158) The Story related in the Qur’an where in Pharaoh, an Egyptian King regarded himself as a deity and responded with slanders and threats to Prophet Musa’s (peace be upon him) calls for him to believe in Allah. This arrogant attitude lasted until he was faced with the threat of death through drowning.

Choice is Yours The Qur’an relates that Pharaoh immediately turned to belief when faced with Allah’s ( ) punishment: We brought the tribe of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his troops pursued them out of tyranny and enmity. Then, when he was on the point of drowning, he [Pharaoh] said: “I believe that there is no god but Him in Whom the tribe of Israel believes. I am one of the Muslims.” (Qur’an chapter 10 verse 90) However, this last-minute conversion was not accepted, for it was not sincere. According to the Qur’an, Allah ( ) exclaimed: “What, now! When previously you rebelled and were one of the corrupters? Today we Pharoh’s body in the Egyptian Museum will preserve your body so you can be a Sign for people who come after you. Surely many people are heedless of Our Signs.” (Qur’an chapter 10 verses 91-92) The information that Pharaoh’s corpse would serve as a sign for later generations may be regarded as an indication that his body would not decay. On display in the Royal Mummies Chamber of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo is a mummified body believed to be that of this tyrant. In all likelihood, Pharaoh’s body floated to shore after being drowned, was found and mummified by the Egyptians, and then carried to a previously prepared burial chamber. 42

Choice is Yours The Qur’an is not merely a book of science. It has got the past stories of the prophets, such as Prophet Adam, Prophet Noah, Prophet Abraham, Prophet Moses, Prophet Jesus and also Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them). Qur’an has got teachings for mankind. We’ll discuss on the misconceptions which many non Muslims have in their minds, in the following chapter.

1. Definition of Polygamy Polygamy means a system of marriage whereby one person has more than one spouse. Polygamy can be of two types. One is polygyny where a man marries more than one woman, and the other is polyandry, where a woman marries more than one man. In Islam, limited polygyny is permitted; whereas polyandry is completely prohibited. 2. Qur’an is the only religious scripture in the world that says, “marry only one”. The Qur’an is the only religious book, on the face of this earth, that contains the phrase ‘marry only one’. There is no other religious book that instructs men to have only one wife. In none of the other religious scriptures, whether it be the Vedas, the Ramayan, the Mahabharat, the Geeta, the Talmud or the Bible does one find a restriction on the number of wives. According to these scriptures one can marry as many as one wishes. It was only later, that the Hindu priests and the Christian Church restricted the number of wives to one. Many Hindu religious personalities, according to their scriptures, had multiple wives. King Dashrat, the father of Rama, had more than one wife. Krishna had several wives. In earlier times, Christian men were permitted as many wives as they wished, since the Bible puts no restriction on the number of wives. It was only a few centuries ago that the Church restricted the number of wives to one. Polygyny is permitted in Judaism. According to Talmudic law, Abraham had three wives, and Solomon had hundreds of wives. The practice of polygyny continued till Rabbi Gershom ben Yehudah (960 C.E to 1030 C.E) issued an edict against it. The Jewish Sephardic communities living in Muslim countries 46

Choice is Yours continued the practice till as late as 1950, until an Act of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel extended the ban on marrying more than one wife. *Interesting Note: - As per the 1975 census of India Hindus are more polygynous than Muslims. The report of the ‘Committee of The Status of Woman in Islam’, published in 1975 mentions on page numbers 66 and 67 that the percentage of polygamous marriages between the years 1951 and 1961 was 5.06% among the Hindus and only 4.31% among the Muslims. According to Indian law only Muslim men are permitted to have more than one wife. It is illegal for any non-Muslim in India to have more than one wife. Despite it being illegal, Hindus have more multiple wives as compared to Muslims. Earlier, there was no restriction even on Hindu men with respect to the number of wives allowed. It was only in 1954, when the Hindu Marriage Act was passed that it became illegal for a Hindu to have more than one wife. At present it is the Indian Law that restricts a Hindu man from having more than one wife and not the Hindu scriptures. Let us now analyze why Islam allows a man to have more than one wife. 3. Qur’an permits limited polygyny As I mentioned earlier, Qur’an is the only religious book on the face of the earth that says ‘marry only one’. The context of this phrase is the following verse from Surah Nisa of the Glorious Qur’an: “Marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one.” (Qur’an chapter 4 verse 3) Before the Qur’an was revealed, there was no upper limit for polygyny and many men had scores of wives, some even hundreds. Islam put an upper limit of four wives. Islam gives a man permission to marry two, three or four women, only on the condition that he deals justly with them. (In the same chapter i.e. Chapter 4 verse 129 says: 47

Choice is Yours “Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women....”.) Therefore polygyny is not a rule but an exception. Many people are under the misconception that it is compulsory for a Muslim man to have more than one wife. Broadly, Islam has five categories of Do’s and Don’ts: (a) ‘Fard’ i.e. compulsory or obligatory (b) ‘Mustahab’ i.e. recommended or encouraged (c) ‘Mubah’ i.e. permissible or allowed (d) ‘Makruh’ i.e. not recommended or discouraged (e) ‘Haraam’ i.e. prohibited or forbidden Polygyny falls in the middle category of things that are permissible. It cannot be said that a Muslim who has two, three or four wives is a better Muslim as compared to a Muslim who has only one wife. 4. Average life span of females is more than that of males By nature males and females are born in approximately the same ratio. A female child has more immunity than a male child. A female child can fight the germs and diseases better than the male child. For this reason, during the pediatric age itself there are more deaths among males as compared to the females. During wars, there are more men killed as compared to women. More men die due to accidents and diseases than women. The average life span of females is more than that of males, and at any given time one finds more widows in the world than widowers. 5. India has more male population than female due to female foeticide and infanticide India is one of the few countries, along with the other 48

Choice is Yours neighbouring countries, in which the female population is less than the male population. The reason lies in the high rate of female infanticide in India, and the fact that more than one million female foetuses are aborted every year in this country, after they are identified as females. If this evil practice is stopped, then India too will have more females as compared to males. 6. World female population is more than male population In the USA, women outnumber men by 7.8 million. New York alone has one million more females as compared to the number of males, and of the male population of New York one-third are gays i.e. sodomites. The U.S.A as a whole has more than twenty-five million gays. This means that these people do not wish to marry women. Great Britain has four million more females as compared to males. Germany has five million more females as compared to males. Russia has nine million more females than males. God alone knows how many million more females there are in the whole world as compared to males. 7. Restricting each and every man to have only one wife is not practical Even if every man got married to one woman, there would still be more than thirty million females in U.S.A who would not be able to get husbands (considering that America has twenty five million gays). There would be more than four million females in Great Britain, 5 million females in Germany and nine million females in Russia alone who would not be able to find a husband. Suppose my sister happens to be one of the unmarried women living in USA, or suppose your sister happens to be one of the unmarried women in USA. The only two options remaining for her are that she either marries a man who already has a wife or becomes ‘public property’. 49

Choice is Yours There is no other option. All those who are modest will opt for the first. Most women would not like to share their husband with other women. But in Islam when the situation deems it really necessary Muslim women in due faith could bear a small personal loss to prevent a greater loss of letting other Muslim sisters becoming ‘public properties’. 8. Marring a married man preferable to becoming ‘public property’ In Western society, it is common for a man to have mistresses and/or multiple extra-marital affairs, in which case, the woman leads a disgraceful, unprotected life. The same society, however, cannot accept a man having more than one wife, in which women retain their honourable, dignified position in society and lead a protected life. Thus the only two options before a woman who cannot find a husband is to marry a married man or to become ‘public property’. Islam prefers giving women the honourable position by permitting the first option and disallowing the second. There are several other reasons, why Islam has permitted limited polygyny, but it is mainly to protect the modesty of women.

lot of people, including some Muslims, question the logic of allowing Muslim men to have more than one spouse while denying the same ‘right’ to women.

Let me first state emphatically, that the foundation of an Islamic society is justice and equity. Allah has created men and women as equal, but with different capabilities and different responsibilities. Men and women are different, physiologically and psychologically. Their roles and responsibilities are different. Men and women are equal in Islam, but not identical. Surah Nisa’ Chapter 4 verses 22 to 24 gives the list of women with whom Muslim men can not marry. It is further mentioned in Surah Nisa’ Chapter 4 verse 24 “Also (prohibited are) women already married.” The following points enumerate polyandry is prohibited in Islam: the reasons why

1. If a man has more than one wife, the parents of the children born of such marriages can easily be identified. The father as well as the mother can easily be identified. In case of a woman marrying more than one husband, only the mother of the children born of such marriages will be identified and not the father. Islam gives tremendous importance to the identification of both parents, mother and father. Psychologists tell us that children who do not know their parents, especially their father undergo severe mental trauma and disturbances. Often they have an unhappy childhood. It is for this reason that the children of prostitutes do not have a healthy childhood. If a child born of such wedlock is admitted in school, and when the mother is asked the name of the father, she would have to give two or more names! I am aware that recent advances in science have made it possible for both the mother and father to be identified with the help 51

Choice is Yours of genetic testing. Thus this point which was applicable for the past may not be applicable for the present. 2. Man is more polygamous by nature as compared to a woman. 3. Biologically, it is easier for a man to perform his duties as a husband despite having several wives. A woman, in a similar position, having several husbands, will not find it possible to perform her duties as a wife. A woman undergoes several psychological and behavioral changes due to different phases of the menstrual cycle. 4. A woman who has more than one husband will have several sexual partners at the same time and has a high chance of acquiring venereal or sexually transmitted diseases which can also be transmitted back to her husband even if all of them have no extra-marital sex. This is not the case in a man having more than one wife, and none of them having extramarital sex. The above reasons are those that one can easily identify. There are probably many more reasons why Allah, in His Infinite Wisdom, has prohibited polyandry.

he status of women in Islam is often the target of attacks in the secular media. The ‘hijaab’ or the Islamic dress is cited by many as an example of the ‘subjugation’ of women under Islamic law. Before we analyze the reasoning behind the religiously mandated ‘hijaab’, let us first study the status of women in societies before the advent of Islam 1. In the past women were degraded and used as objects of lust The following examples from history amply illustrate the fact that the status of women in earlier civilizations was very low to the extent that they were denied basic human dignity: a. Babylonian Civilization: The women were degraded and were denied all rights under the Babylonian law. If a man murdered a woman, instead of him being punished, his wife was put to death. b. Greek Civilization: Greek Civilization is considered the most glorious of all ancient civilizations. Under this very ‘glorious’ system, women were deprived of all rights and were looked down upon. In Greek mythology, an ‘imaginary woman’ called ‘Pandora’ is the root cause of misfortune of human beings. The Greeks considered women to be subhuman and inferior to men. Though chastity of women was precious, and women were held in high esteem, the Greeks were later overwhelmed by ego and sexual perversions. Prostitution became a regular practice amongst all classes of Greek society. c. Roman Civilization: When Roman Civilization was at the zenith of its ‘glory’, a man even had the right to take the life of his wife. Prostitution 53

Choice is Yours and nudity were common amongst the Romans. d. Egyptian Civilization: The Egyptian considered women evil and as a sign of a devil. e. Pre-Islamic Arabia: Before Islam spread in Arabia, the Arabs looked down upon women and very often when a female child was born, she was buried alive. 2. Islam uplifted women and gave them equality and expects them to maintain their status. Islam uplifted the status of women and granted them their just rights 1425 years ago. Islam expects women to maintain their status. Hijaab for men People usually only discuss ‘hijaab’ in the context of women. However, in the Glorious Qur’an, Allah ( ) first mentions ‘hijaab’ for men before ‘hijaab’ for the women. The Qur’an mentions in Surah Noor: “Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do.” (Qur’an chapter 24 verse 30) The moment a man looks at a woman and if any brazen or unashamed thought comes to his mind, he should lower his gaze. Hijaab for women. The next verse of Surah Noor, says: “And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must 54

Choice is Yours ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons...” (Qur’an chapter 24 verse 31)

3. Six criteria for Hijaab. According to Qur’an and Sunnah there are basically six criteria for observing hijaab: 1. Extent: The first criterion is the extent of the body that should be covered. This is different for men and women. The extent of covering obligatory on the male is to cover the body at least from the navel to the knees. For women, the extent of covering obligatory is to cover the complete body except the face and the hands up to the wrist. If they wish to, they can cover even these parts of the body. Some scholars of Islam insist that the face and the hands are part of the obligatory extent of ‘hijaab’. All the remaining five criteria are the same for men and women. 2. The clothes worn should be loose and should not reveal the figure. 3. The clothes worn should not be transparent such that one can see through them. 4. The clothes worn should not be so glamorous as to attract the opposite sex. 5. The clothes worn should not resemble that of the opposite sex. 6. The clothes worn should not resemble that of the unbelievers i.e. they should not wear clothes that are specifically identities or symbols of the unbelievers’ religions.

Choice is Yours 4. Hijaab includes conduct and behaviour among other things Complete ‘hijaab’, besides the six criteria of clothing, also includes the moral conduct, behaviour, attitude and intention of the individual. A person only fulfilling the criteria of ‘hijaab’ of the clothes is observing ‘hijaab’ in a limited sense. ‘Hijaab’ of the clothes should be accompanied by ‘hijaab’ of the eyes, ‘hijaab’ of the heart, ‘hijaab’ of thought and ‘hijaab’ of intention. It also includes the way a person walks, the way a person talks, the way he behaves, etc. 5. Hijaab prevents molestation The reason why Hijaab is prescribed for women is mentioned in the Qur’an in the following verses of Surah Al-Ahzab: “O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad); that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Qur’an chapter 33 verse 59) The Qur’an says that Hijaab has been prescribed for the women so that they are recognized as modest women and this will also prevent them from being molested. 6. Example of twin sisters Suppose two sisters who are twins, and who are equally beautiful, walk down the street. One of them is attired in the Islamic hijaab i.e. the complete body is covered, except for the face and the hands up to the wrists. The other sister is wearing western clothes, a mini skirt or shorts. Just around the corner there is a hooligan or ruffian who is waiting for a catch, to tease a girl. Whom will he tease, the girl wearing the Islamic Hijaab or the girl wearing the skirt or the mini? Naturally he will tease the girl wearing the skirt or the mini. Such dresses are an indirect invitation to the opposite sex for 56

Choice is Yours teasing and molestation. The Qur’an rightly says that hijaab prevents women from being molested. 7. Capital punishment for the rapists Under the Islamic Shariah, a man convicted of having raped a woman, is given capital punishment. Many are astonished at this ‘harsh’ sentence. Some even say that Islam is a ruthless, barbaric religion! I have asked a simple question to hundreds of non-Muslim men. Suppose, God forbid, someone rapes your wife, your mother or your sister. You are made the judge and the rapist is brought in front of you. What punishment would you give him? All of them said they would put him to death. Some went to the extent of saying they would torture him to death. To them I ask, if someone rapes your wife or your mother you want to put him to death. But if the same crime is committed on somebody else’s wife or daughter you say capital punishment is barbaric. Why should there be double standards? 8. Western society falsely claims to have uplifted women Western talk of women’s liberalization is nothing but a disguised form of exploitation of her body, degradation of her soul, and deprivation of her honour. Western society claims to have ‘uplifted’ women. On the contrary it has actually degraded them to the status of concubines, mistresses and society butterflies who are mere tools in the hands of pleasure seekers and sex marketeers, hidden behind the colourful screen of ‘art’ and ‘culture’. 9. USA has one of the highest rates of rape United States of America is supposed to be one of the most advanced countries of the world. It also has one of the 57

Choice is Yours highest rates of rape in any country in the world. According to a FBI report, in the year 1990, every day on an average 1756 cases of rape were committed in U.S.A alone. Later another report said that on an average everyday 1900 cases of rapes are committed in USA. The year was not mentioned. May be it was 1992 or 1993. May be the Americans got ‘bolder’ in the following years. Consider a scenario where the Islamic hijaab is followed in America. Whenever a man looks at a woman and any brazen or unashamed thought comes to his mind, he lowers his gaze. Every woman wears the Islamic hijaab, that is the complete body is covered except the face and the hands up to the wrist. After this if any man commits rape he is given capital punishment. I ask you, in such a scenario, will the rate of rape in America increase, will it remain the same, or will it decrease? 10. Implementation of Islamic Shariah will reduce the rate of rapes Naturally as soon as Islamic Shariah is implemented positive results will be inevitable. If Islamic Shariah is implemented in any part of the world, whether it is America or Europe, society will breathe easier. Hijaab does not degrade a woman but uplifts a woman and protects her modesty and chastity.

t is a common complaint among some non-Muslims that Islam would not have millions of adherents all over the world, if it had not been spread by the use of force. The following points will make it clear, that far from being spread by the sword, it was the inherent force of truth, reason and logic that was responsible for the rapid spread of Islam. 1. Islam means peace. Islam comes from the root word ‘salaam’, which means peace. It also means submitting one’s will to Allah ( ). Thus Islam is a religion of peace, which is acquired by submitting one’s will to the will of the Supreme Creator, Allah ( ). 2. Sometimes force has to be used to maintain peace. Each and every human being in this world is not in favour of maintaining peace and harmony. There are many, who would disrupt it for their own vested interests. Sometimes force has to be used to maintain peace. It is precisely for this reason that we have the police who use force against criminals and antisocial elements to maintain peace in the country. Islam promotes peace. At the same time, Islam exhorts it followers to fight where there is oppression. The fight against oppression may, at times, require the use of force. In Islam force can only be used to promote peace and justice. 3. Opinion of historian De Lacy O’Leary. The best reply to the misconception that Islam was spread by the sword is given by the noted historian De Lacy O’Leary in the book “Islam at the cross road” (Page 8):

Choice is Yours “History makes it clear however, that the legend of fanatical Muslims sweeping through the world and forcing Islam at the point of the sword upon conquered races is one of the most fantastically absurd myth that historians have ever repeated.” 4. Muslims ruled Spain for 800 years. Muslims ruled Spain for about 800 years. The Muslims in Spain never used the sword to force the people to convert. Later the Christian Crusaders came to Spain and wiped out the Muslims. There was not a single Muslim in Spain who could openly give the adhan, that is the call for prayers. 5. 14 million Arabs are Coptic Christians. Muslims were the lords of Arabia for 1400 years. For a few years the British ruled, and for a few years the French ruled. Overall, the Muslims ruled Arabia for 1400 years. Yet today, there are 14 million Arabs who are Coptic Christians i.e. Christians since generations. If the Muslims had used the sword there would not have been a single Arab who would have remained a Christian. 6. More than 80% non-Muslims in India. The Muslims ruled India for about a thousand years. If they wanted, they had the power of converting each and every non-Muslim of India to Islam. Today more than 80% of the population of India are non-Muslims. All these nonMuslim Indians are bearing witness today that Islam was not spread by the sword. 7. Indonesia and Malaysia. Indonesia is a country that has the maximum number of Muslims in the world. The majority of people in Malaysia are Muslims. May one ask, “Which Muslim army went to Indonesia and Malaysia?” 60

Choice is Yours 8. East Coast of Africa. Similarly, Islam has spread rapidly on the East Coast of Africa. One may again ask, if Islam was spread by the sword, “Which Muslim army went to the East Coast of Africa?” 9. Thomas Carlyle. The famous historian, Thomas Carlyle, in his book “Heroes and Hero worship”, refers to this misconception about the spread of Islam: “The sword indeed, but where will you get your sword? Every new opinion, at its starting is precisely in a minority of one. In one man’s head alone. There it dwells as yet. One man alone of the whole world believes it, there is one man against all men. That he takes a sword and try to propagate with that, will do little for him. You must get your sword! On the whole, a thing will propagate itself as it can.” 10. No compulsion in religion. With which sword was Islam spread? Even if Muslims had it they could not use it to spread Islam because the Qur’an says in the following verse: “Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from error” (Qur’an chapter 2 verse 256) 11. Sword of the Intellect. It is the sword of intellect. The sword that conquers the hearts and minds of people. The Qur’an says, “Invite (all) to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious.” (Qur’an chapter 16 verse 125) 12. Increase in the world religions from 1934 to 1984. An article in Reader’s Digest ‘Almanac’, year book 1986,

Choice is Yours gave the statistics of the increase of percentage of the major religions of the world in half a century from 1934 to 1984. This article also appeared in ‘The Plain Truth’ magazine. At the top was Islam, which increased by 235%, and Christianity had increased only by 47%. May one ask, which war took place in this century which converted millions of people to Islam? 13. Islam is the fastest growing religion in America and Europe. Today the fastest growing religion in America is Islam. The fastest growing religion in Europe in Islam. Which sword is forcing people in the West to accept Islam in such large numbers? 14. Dr. Joseph Adam Pearson. Dr. Joseph Adam Pearson rightly says, “People who worry that nuclear weaponry will one day fall in the hands of the Arabs, fail to realize that the Islamic bomb has been dropped already, it fell the day MUHAMMED ( ) was born”.

t is often hurled at Muslims, either directly or indirectly, during any discussion on religion or world affairs. Muslim stereotypes are perpetuated in every form of the media accompanied by gross misinformation about Islam and Muslims. In fact, such misinformation and false propaganda often leads to discrimination and acts of violence against Muslims. A case in point is the anti-Muslim campaign in the American media following the Oklahoma bomb blast, where the press was quick to declare a ‘Middle Eastern conspiracy’ behind the attack. The culprit was later identified as a soldier from the American Armed Forces. Let us analyze this allegation of ‘fundamentalism’ and ‘terrorism’: 1. Definition of the word ‘fundamentalist’ A fundamentalist is a person who follows and adheres to the fundamentals of the doctrine or theory he is following. For a person to be a good doctor, he should know, follow, and practise the fundamentals of medicine. In other words, he should be a fundamentalist in the field of medicine. For a person to be a good mathematician, he should know, follow and practise the fundamentals of mathematics. He should be a fundamentalist in the field of mathematics. For a person to be a good scientist, he should know, follow and practise the fundamentals of science. He should be a fundamentalist in the field of science. 2. Not all ‘fundamentalists’ are the same One cannot paint all fundamentalists with the same brush. One cannot categorize all fundamentalists as either good or bad. Such a categorization of any fundamentalist will depend 63

Choice is Yours upon the field or activity in which he is a fundamentalist. A fundamentalist robber or thief causes harm to society and is therefore undesirable. A fundamentalist doctor, on the other hand, benefits society and earns much respect. 3. I am proud to be a Muslim funda-mentalist I am a fundamentalist Muslim who, by the grace of Allah, knows, follows and strives to practise the fundamentals of Islam. A true Muslim does not shy away from being a fundamentalist. I am proud to be a fundamentalist Muslim because, I know that the fundamentals of Islam are beneficial to humanity and the whole world. There is not a single fundamental of Islam that causes harm or is against the interests of the human race as a whole. Many people harbour misconceptions about Islam and consider several teachings of Islam to be unfair or improper. This is due to insufficient and incorrect knowledge of Islam. If one critically analyzes the teachings of Islam with an open mind, one cannot escape the fact that Islam is full of benefits both at the individual and collective levels. 4. Dictionary meaning of the word ‘fundamentalist’ According to Webster’s dictionary ‘fundamentalism’ was a movement in American Protestanism that arose in the earlier part of the 20th century. It was a reaction to modernism, and stressed the infallibility of the Bible, not only in matters of faith and morals but also as a literal historical record. It stressed on belief in the Bible as the literal word of God. Thus fundamentalism was a word initially used for a group of Christians who believed that the Bible was the verbatim word of God without any errors and mistakes. According to the Oxford dictionary ‘fundamentalism’ means ‘strict maintenance of ancient or fundamental doctrines of any religion, especially Islam’.

Choice is Yours Today the moment a person uses the word fundamentalist he thinks of a Muslim who is a terrorist. 5. Every Muslim should be a terrorist Every Muslim should be a terrorist. A terrorist is a person who causes terror. The moment a robber sees a policeman he is terrified. A policeman is a terrorist for the robber. Similarly every Muslim should be a terrorist for the antisocial elements of society, such as thieves, dacoits and rapists. Whenever such an anti-social element sees a Muslim, he should be terrified. It is true that the word ‘terrorist’ is generally used for a person who causes terror among the common people. But a true Muslim should only be a terrorist to selective people i.e. antisocial elements, and not to the common innocent people. In fact a Muslim should be a source of peace for innocent people. 6. Different labels given to the same individual for the same action, i.e. ‘terrorist’ and ‘patriot’ Before India achieved independence from British rule, some freedom fighters of India who did not subscribe to nonviolence were labeled as terrorists by the British government. The same individuals have been lauded by Indians for the same activities and hailed as ‘patriots’. Thus two different labels have been given to the same people for the same set of actions. One is calling him a terrorist while the other is calling him a patriot. Those who believed that Britain had a right to rule over India called these people terrorists, while those who were of the view that Britain had no right to rule India called them patriots and freedom fighters. It is therefore important that before a person is judged, he is given a fair hearing. Both sides of the argument should be heard, the situation should be analyzed, and the reason and the intention of the person should be taken into account, and then the person can be judged accordingly.

It is a religion of peace whose fundamentals teach its followers to maintain and promote peace throughout the world. Thus every Muslim should be a fundamentalist i.e. he should follow the fundamentals of the Religion of Peace: Islam. He should be a terrorist only towards the antisocial elements in order to promote peace and justice in the society.

‘Vegetarianism’ is now a movement the world over. Many even associate it with animal rights. Indeed, a large number of people consider the consumption of meat and other nonvegetarian products to be a violation of animal rights. Islam enjoins mercy and compassion for all living creatures. At the same time Islam maintains that Allah has created the earth and its wondrous flora and fauna for the benefit of mankind. It is up to mankind to use every resource in this world judiciously, as a niyaamat (Divine blessing) and amaanat (trust) from Allah ( ). Let us look at various other aspects of this argument. 1. A Muslim can be a pure vegetarian A Muslim can be a very good Muslim despite being a pure vegetarian. It is not compulsory for a Muslim to have nonvegetarian food. 2. Qur’an permits Muslims to have non-vegetarian food The Qur’an, however permits a Muslim to have nonvegetarian food. The following Qur’anic verses are proof of this fact: “O ye who believe! Fulfil (all) obligations. Lawful unto you (for food) are all four-footed animals with the exceptions named.” (Qur’an chapter 5 verse 1) “And cattle He has created for you (men): from them Ye derive warmth, and numerous benefits, And of their (meat) ye eat.” (Qur’an chapter 16 verse 5) “And in cattle From within their drink; there are, benefits for you; chapter 23 verse 21) (too) ye have an instructive example: bodies We produce (milk) for you to in them, (besides), numerous (other) and of their (meat) ye eat.” (Qur’an

Choice is Yours 3. Meat is nutritious and rich in complete protein Non-vegetarian food is a good source of excellent protein. It contains biologically complete protein i.e. all the 8 essential amino acid that are not synthesized by the body and should be supplied in the diet. Meat also contains iron, vitamin B1 and niacin. 4. Humans have Omnivorous set of teeth If you observe the teeth of herbivorous animals like the cow, goat and sheep, you will find something strikingly similar in all of them. All these animals have a set of flat teeth i.e. suited for herbivorous diet. If you observe the set of teeth of the carnivorous animals like the lion, tiger, or leopard, they all have a set of pointed teeth i.e. suited for a carnivorous diet. If you analyze the set of teeth of humans, you find that they have flat teeth as well as pointed teeth. Thus they have teeth suited for both herbivorous as well as carnivorous food i.e. they are omnivorous. One may ask, if Almighty God wanted humans to have only vegetables, why did He provide us also with pointed teeth? It is logical that He expected us to need and to have both vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian food. 5. Human beings can digest both vegetarian and nonvegetarian food The digestive system of herbivorous animals can digest only vegetables. The digestive system of carnivorous animals can digest only meat. But the digestive system of humans can digest both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. If Almighty God wanted us to have only vegetables then why did He give us a digestive system that can digest both vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian food? 6. Hindu scriptures give permission to have nonvegetarian food a. There are many Hindus who are strictly vegetarian. They think it is against their religion to consume non-vegetarian food. But the true fact is that the

Choice is Yours Hindu scriptures permit a person to have meat. The scriptures mention Hindu sages and saints consuming non-vegetarian food. b. It is mentioned in Manu Smruti, the law book of Hindus, in chapter 5 verse 30 “The eater who eats the flesh of those to be eaten does nothing bad, even if he does it day after day, for God himself created some to be eaten and some to be eater.” Again next verse of Manu Smruti, that is, chapter 5 verse 31 says “Eating meat is right for the sacrifice, this is traditionally known as a rule of the gods.” Further in Manu Smruti chapter 5 verse 39 and 40 says “God himself created sacrificial animals for sacrifice, ..., therefore killing in a sacrifice is not killing.” e. Mahabharata Anushashan Parva chapter 88 narrates the discussion between Dharmaraj Yudhishthira and Pitamah Bhishma about what food one should offer to Pitris (ancestors) during the Shraddha (ceremony of dead) to keep them satisfied. Paragraph reads as follows: “Yudhishthira said, “O thou of great puissance, tell me what that object is which, if dedicated to the Pitiris (dead ancestors), become inexhaustible! What, (if offered) lasts for all time? What, indeed, is that which (if presented) becomes eternal?” “Bhishma said, “Listen to me, O Yudhishthira, what those Havis are which persons conversant with the rituals of the Shraddha (the ceremony of dead) regard as suitable in view of Shraddha and what the fruits are that attach to each. With sesame seeds and rice and barely and Masha and water and roots and fruits, if given at Shraddhas, the pitris, O king, remain gratified for the period of a month. With fishes offered at Shraddhas, the pitris remain gratified for a period of two months. With the

Choice is Yours mutton they remain gratified for three months and with the hare for four months, with the flesh of the goat for five months, with the bacon (meat of pig) for six months, and with the flesh of birds for seven. With venison obtained from those deer that are called Prishata, they remain gratified for eight months, and with that obtained from the Ruru for nine months, and with the meat of Gavaya for ten months, With the meat of the bufffalo their gratification lasts for eleven months. With beef presented at the Shraddha, their gratification, it is said, lasts for a full year. Payasa mixed with ghee is as much acceptable to the pitris as beef. With the meat of Vadhrinasa (a large bull) the gratification of pitris lasts for twelve years. The flesh of rhinoceros, offered to the pitris on anniversaries of the lunar days on which they died, becomes inexhaustible. The potherb called Kalaska, the petals of kanchana flower, and meat of (red) goat also, thus offered, prove inexhaustible. So but natural if you want to keep your ancestors satisfied forever, you should serve them the meat of red goat. f. g. h. Rig Veda -10:16:7 - Agni is a Vedic God and is described as fed on Ox and cow. Rig Veda - 10:86:13 - Indra eats bulls. Rig Veda - 10:86:14 - Indra says, “They have cooked for me fifteen bulls and twenty, so that I may eat the fats as well. Both sides of my belly are full.” Brhadaranyaka Upanishad - 6:4:18 - He who wishes ‘May a son born to me ,who will be a reputed scholar, attend assemblies, speak words that one likes to hear, be versed in all the Vedas and attain full longevity” should have rice cooked with beef that of a young mature bull and with his wife eat it mixed with ghee. Then they will be able to produce such a son.

Choice is Yours 7. Hinduism was influenced by other religions Though Hindu Scriptures permit its followers to have non-vegetarian food, many Hindus adopted the vegetarian system because they were influenced by other religions like Jainism. 8. Even plants have life

Certain religions have adopted pure vegetarianism as a dietary law because they are totally against the killing of living creatures. If a person can survive without killing any living creature, I would be the first person to adopt such a way of life. In the past people thought plants were lifeless. Today it is a universal fact that even plants have life. Thus their logic of not killing living creatures is not fulfilled even by being a pure vegetarian. 9. Even plants can feel pain They further argue that plants cannot feel pain; therefore killing a plant is a lesser crime as compared to killing an animal. Today science tells us that even plants can feel pain. But the cry of the plant cannot be heard by the human being. This is due to the inability of the human ear to hear sounds that are not in the audible range i.e. 20 Hertz to 20,000 Hertz. Anything below and above this range cannot be heard by a human being. A dog can hear up to 40,000 Hertz. Thus there are silent dog whistles that have a frequency of more than 20,000 Hertz and less than 40,000 Hertz. These whistles are only heard by dogs and not by human beings. The dog recognizes the master’s whistle and comes to the master. There was research done by 71

Choice is Yours a farmer in U.S.A. who invented an instrument which converted the cry of the plant so that it could be heard by human beings. He was able to realize immediately when the plant itself cried for water. Latest researches show that the plants can even feel happy and sad. It can also cry. 10. Killing a living creature with two senses less is not a lesser crime Once a vegetarian argued by saying that plants only have two or three senses while the animals have five senses. Therefore killing a plant is a lesser crime than killing an animal. Suppose your brother is born deaf and dumb and has two senses less as compared to other human beings. He becomes mature and someone murders him. Would you ask the judge to give the murderer a lesser punishment because your brother has two senses less? In fact you would say that he has killed a “masoom”, an innocent person, and the judge should give the murderer a greater punishment. In fact the Qur’an says: “O ye people! Eat of what is on earth, lawful and good.” (Qur’an chapter 2 verse 168) 11. Over population of cattle If every human being was a vegetarian, it would lead to overpopulation of cattle in the world, since their reproduction and multiplication is very swift. Allah ( ) in His Divine Wisdom knows how to maintain the balance of His creation appropriately. No wonder He has permitted us to have the meat of the cattle.

he Islamic method of slaughtering animals, known as Zabiha has been the object of much criticism from a large number of people. One may consider the following points, which prove that the Zabiha method is not only humane but also scientifically the best: 1. Islamic method of slaughtering animal Zakkaytum is a verb derived from the root word Zakah (to purify). Its infinitive is Tazkiyah which means purification. The Islamic mode of slaughtering an animal requires the following conditions to be met: a. Animal should be slaughtered with sharp object (knife) The animal has to be slaughtered with a sharp object (knife) and in a fast way so that the pain of slaughter is minimised. b. Cut wind pipe, throat and vessels of neck Zabiha is an Arabic word which means ‘slaughtered’. The ‘slaughtering’ is to be done by cutting the throat, windpipe and the blood vessels in the neck causing the animal’s death without cutting the spinal cord. c. Blood should be drained The blood has to be drained completely before the head is removed. The purpose is to drain out most of the blood, which would serve as a good culture medium for micro organisms. The spinal cord must not be cut because the nerve fibres to the heart could be damaged during the process causing cardiac arrest, stagnating the blood in the blood vessels.

Choice is Yours 2. Blood is a good medium for germs and bacteria Blood is a good media of germs, bacteria, toxins, etc. Therefore the Muslim way of slaughtering is more hygienic as most of the blood containing germs, bacteria, toxins, etc. that are the cause of several diseases are eliminated. 3. Meat remains fresh for a longer time Meat slaughtered by Islamic way remains fresh for a longer time due to deficiency of blood in the meat as compared to other methods of slaughtering. 4. Animal does not feel pain The swift cutting of vessels of the neck disconnects the flow of blood to the nerve of the brain responsible for pain. Thus the animal does not feel pain. While dying, the animal struggles, writhers, shakes and kicks, not due to pain, but due to the contraction and relaxation of the muscles defecient in blood and due to the flow of blood out of the body. Let us now discuss on the portion of the Qur’an wherein Allah says the purpose of life, the description of Paradise, the description of Hell and many more.

llah ( ) is the Creator of the people, the animals, and the plants and trees. Allah ( ) is the Creator of the Earth, its planets, its mountains, its valleys, its rivers, and its oceans. Allah ( ) is the Creator of the sun, the moon, and all the planets and stars in the skies. Allah ( ) is the Creator of everything. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Such is Allah, your Lord. There is no God save Him, the Creator of all things, so worship Him. And He taketh care of all things.”(Qur’an chapter 6 verse 102)

We must worship Him because He is the only true God. Allah ( ) is merciful to us and would not let us fall into confusion. He gives us the best guidance. He tells us all we need to know in order to live a happy life. Most importantly, He tells us our true goal in life and the reason that this world was created. Allah ( ) says: “I created the jinn and humankind only that they might worship Me. I seek no livelihood from them, nor do I ask that they should feed Me. Lo! Allah! He it is that giveth livelihood, the Lord of unbreakable might.” (Qur’an chapter 51 verses 56-58) This means, that we must obey Allah ( ) and worship Him. This is the reason for which we have been created. Allah ( ) does not need any food or help from us. He is the One who gives food and help. He gave us everything that we have. He wants us to be good so as to deserve His reward. This must be our main goal in life. All other goals should be secondary and supportive to this great goal.

The characteristics of Allah ( ) mentioned in the Qur’an:

1. Say: He is Allah the One and Only; 2. Allah the Self Sufficient Master. 3. He begetteth not, nor is He begotten; 4. And there is none like unto Him. (Qur’an chapter 112 verses 1-4) “He is Allah , One (Al-Ahad).’’ meaning, He is the One, the Singular, Who has no peer, no assistant, no rival, no equal and none comparable to Him. This word (Al-Ahad) cannot be used for anyone in affirmation except Allah the Mighty and Majestic, because He is perfect in all of His attributes and actions. (Allah As-Samad.) This means the One Whom all of the creation depends upon for their needs and their requests. He is the Master Who is perfect in His sovereignty, the Most Noble Who is perfect in His nobility, the Most Magnificent Who is perfect in His magnificence, the Most Forbearing Who is perfect in His forbearance, the All-Knowing Who is perfect in His knowledge, and the Most Wise Who is perfect in His wisdom. He is the One Who is perfect in all aspects of nobility and authority. He is Allah, glory be unto Him. These attributes are not befitting anyone other than Him. He has no co-equal and nothing is like Him. Glory be to Allah, the One, the Irresistible. “As-Samad” is the Master Whose control is complete.’’ He begets not, nor was He begotten. Allah’s names Allah’s names are called the excellent names because they are all good and wonderful. Such as “Ar- Rahmaan” The Compassionate, “Ar-Raheem” The Merciful, “Al-Muhaymin” The Protector, “Al-Khaliq” The Creator, “Ar-Razzaaq” The Sustainer, “As-Samee” The All-Hearing, “Al-Baseer” The AllSeeing, “Al-Khabeer” The Aware, “Al-Hayy” The Ever living, etc .Allah’s excellent names are found in the Qur’an and true Hadeeths of the prophet. Nobody is allowed to make up names for Allah. Allah’s Apostle said, “Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one.” (Sahih Al Bukhaari volume 3 no.894) Qualities with bodily names of Allah Allah ( ) tells us that He has some qualities that have bodily names. However, these qualities would not have bodily meaning when they are applied to Allah ( ). We cannot imagine how these qualities are for Allah ( ), because this is beyond our human ability. We know for sure that Allah’s qualities are not like any of His creation. And we know for sure that His qualities are most supreme and perfect. We only describe Allah ( ) with the qualities with bodily names that He used to describe Himself. But we may not conclude from this that Allah has a body, because He does not say this about Himself. Among Allah’s qualities with bodily names are the face, 77

Allah ( ) says: “(After Allah destroys this world), there will remain the face of your Lord that is of majesty and honor.” (Qur’an chapter 55 verse 27) Allah’s eyes Allah ( ) has real eyes. His eyes are most perfect. Yet, they are totally different from the eyes of the creation. Allah ( ) says: “It (Noah’s arc) sailed under the watch of Our eyes, as a reward for those who were rejected (by the disbelievers)”. (Qur’an chapter 54 verse 14) We must always remember that Allah’s qualities are not like ours or other creations. So, we may not think of Allah’s eyes as having color, muscles, or eyelids. These qualities are made by Allah, and they only apply to His creation. His eyes are nothing like this. Allah’s hand Allah ( ) has real hands. He ( ) Adam (peace be upon him) with Iblees (Satan)! What prevented yourself to the one whom I have hands?” (Qur’an chapter 38 verse 75) Seeing Allah In this life, no one can see Allah ( ). This is how Allah made the people. Even the prophets were not able to see Him. Allah tells us about Moses (peace be upon him): When Moses came to Our appointed place and his “Rabb” spoke to him, he asked: “O my Lord! Give me power of sight to see You.” He answered: “You cannot see Me. Look at the mountain; if it remains firm in its place then soon you might be able to see Me”. The Prophet ( ) looked up at the moon and said to them: “You will surely be able to see your Lord (in paradise), just as you can now see this full moon. It will not hurt you to look at Him.”(Sahih Al Bukhaari volume 1 no. 547) So it will be very easy for the believers to see Allah. Looking at Him will not be hard. And only the believers in Paradise can see Allah. Allah is above the Heavens Allah ( ) tells that He is above the heavens: “Do ye feel secure that He Who is in heaven will not cause you to be swallowed up by the earth when it shakes (as in an earthquake)?” (Qur’an chapter 67 verse 16) Allah ( ) is higher than all of the creation. He is above everything and nothing is above Him. He is above the mountains, the stars, the sky, and the heavens.

t is very ungrateful to worship anyone besides Allah ( ) or instead of Allah ( ). Doing this is like thanking someone for a favor that someone else did.

Allah ( ) has created mankind. And to worship another with Him, whether it be a stone, tree, sun, moon, prophet, sheikh, star, angel or other is the greatest sin mentioned by Allah ( ), the Most High. The Almighty says: “Surely Allah does not forgive shirk (associating any partner with Him); and may forgive sins other than that if He so pleases. This is because one who commits shirk with Allah, does indeed invent a great sinful lie.” (Qur’an chapter 4 verse 48) We must worship Allah ( ) alone and ask help from Him alone. “O’Allah! You Alone we worship and You Alone we ask for help.” (Qur’an chapter 1 verse 5) Allah ( ) states that He alone brings benefit or harm, and that He does what He wills with His creatures, none can resist His judgment or prevent what He decrees. “If Allah afflicts you with any harm, none can relieve you other than Him; and if He blesses you with happiness, you should know that He has power over everything.” (Qur’an chapter 6 verse 17) Benefit and harm only come from Allah ( ) alone and no one shares with His power over these things. Therefore, He is the one who deserves to be worshipped alone, without ascription of partners. Allah ( ) says: “You shall not pray to others than Allah who can neither benefit nor harm you, for if you do, you shall certainly become one of the wrongdoers.” (Qur’an chapter 10 verse 106)

Choice is Yours It is strictly forbidden to wear rings, twines and the like seeking protection. People worship man and man created statues. These deities can neither help themselves nor help others in dire straits. For instance, when a statue is dropped from a height it breaks. When dropped in the sea it sinks. When made to lie down it can’t stand up by itself. It needs help from another person to stand up. Can that be God? Can God be harmed? The men whom people consider to be deities need to eat, need to sleep, need to go to the bathroom, need to rest, they get illness, they get hurt and they die. They are ignorant about so many things. They can’t create even a fly. Can they be the creator of the worlds? Are they the one’s who give life to man? Any normal person can come to a conclusion that these deities don’t have the characteristics of God in the least bit. But man refuses to accept the truth. After realizing the truth, adamantly clinging on to the falsehood is going to do no good to a person. It is necessary to acknowledge the truth and act accordingly. These deities can’t help man in this world, then how can they help man in the hereafter. God All Mighty has given us a chance to change ourselves from the false beliefs. If man fails to utilize this opportunity it is he the loser and not God All Mighty.

Today we find in the Arabian Peninsula, the Arabs who used to be impoverished herders of camels and sheep are competing in building the tallest tower blocks. 2. The Mosques would be like palaces. This is clearly the case, even though the Prophet ordered simplicity in the houses of Allah ( ), the mosques have become more and more fantastic, with golden domes, marbled floors, lavish carpets and chandeliers.. 3. Say to them: “Wait if you will; we too are waiting.”(Qur’an chapter 6 verse 158)

he dead people will be raised from their graves in their original shape and bodies, and life will be restored to them. This is called ‘Resurrection’. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “I swear by the Day of Resurrection, and I swear by the self reproaching soul! Does man think Dead to Live that We shall not be able to put his bones together? Why not? We are able to put together, in perfect order, the very tips of his fingers.” (Qur’an chapter 75 verses 1-4) Allah ( ) will resurrect every human being, whether he was of the ancient or modern people, whether he died young or old, and whether he was buried in his grave or was eaten by fish in the sea or beasts in the jungle. Allah ( ) will not forget or neglect anyone. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you forth all together. Indeed, Allah is capable of doing things.” (Qur’an chapter 2 verses 148)

Judgment is the time when Allah ( ) will rate every person according to what he did in his first life. It is the time of harvesting the outcome of one’s work in this life. Small and big deeds of a person will be presented. Allah ( ) says: “On that Day men shall proceed in sorted out groups to be shown their ‘Book of Deeds’. Then, whoever has done an atom’s weight of good shall see it there, and whoever has done an atom’s weight of evil shall see it there.” (Qur’an chapter 99 verses 6-8) Nothing is hidden from Allah ( ). Allah ( ) says: “He Alone has the keys of the unseen treasures, of which no one knows except Him. He knows whatever is in the land and in the sea; there is not a single leaf that falls without His knowledge, there is neither a grain in the darkness of the earth nor anything fresh or dry which has not been recorded in a Clear Book.” (Qur’an chapter 6 verse 59)

aradise is the spacious and magnificent place that which Allah ( ) has prepared for His servants who believe in Him and follow His commandments. It is a reward for the truthful, faith and righteous actions.

The luxuries of Paradise are such that no human eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no heart can imagine. Therefore, in what follows, we can only see very little glimpses from the bright beams of Paradise. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “No one knows what delights of the eye have been kept hidden for them as a reward for their good deeds.” (Qur’an chapter 32 verses 17) Paradise has gates through which the believers will enter. Once inside, the believers will never come out again nor will they wish to! That will be the end of their worries and concerns. Paradise will last eternally. There will be no end to its glory, its pleasures, or its dwellers. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “As for those who fear their Rabb, they shall be led towards paradise in groups. When they reach there, its gates will be opened, and its keepers will say: ‘Peace be upon you! You have done well, now enter to live therein forever’.” (Qur’an chapter 39 verse 73) Paradise has numerous rivers filled with various good drinks. They flow beneath the palaces and dwellings of the people of Paradise so they can reach and drink from them whenever they wish. The most common substances flowing in the Paradise’s rivers are: pure water, milk, non intoxicating wine, and honey – all, most sweet and refreshing. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Here is the parable of the paradise which the righteous have been promised: it has rivers the water of which will never be stagnant, rivers of milk whose taste never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of honey pure and clear. Can such people be compared to those who shall dwell in hell forever, and they will be given scalding water which will cut their intestines into pieces?” (Qur’an chapter 47 verse 15) Unlike the disbelievers whose family ties will be ended on Resurrection Day, the believers in Paradise will enjoy a pleasurable family life. They will be reunited with their righteous relatives. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Gardens of perpetual bliss: they shall enter there as well as the righteous among their fathers their spouses and their offspring: and angels shall enter unto them from every gate (with the salutation):” (Qur’an chapter 13 verse 23) The people of Paradise will have all that they desire and that delights the eyes. They will eat the choicest food. They will recline peacefully and joyfully under the shades of magnificent trees whose branches hang low and heavy with fruits waiting to be picked. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Surely the righteous shall dwell amidst cool shades and springs and shall have whatever fruits they desire. We shall say to them: “Eat and drink to your heart’s content, this is the reward for your good deeds.” Thus shall We reward the righteous.”(Qur’an chapter 77 verses 41-44) The people of Paradise will wear garments of silk and heavy brocade trimmed with pure gold. They will adorn themselves with bracelets of gold, and pearls. Everything in Paradise will give the impression of great luxury. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Allah will admit those who believe and work righteous deeds to Gardens beneath which rivers flow: they shall be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearls; and their garments there will be of silk.” (Qur’an chapter 22 verse 23) Nothing in Paradise is similar to what is in this world. Paradise’s magnificence is beyond our perception or comprehension.

ell is the place of great torture that Allah ( ) has prepared for the disbelievers and the disobedient people. The disbelievers live in this life like cattle, running after their bodily needs and pleasures while neglecting the most important goal and enjoyment of all: true servitude to the Lord of the worlds. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Verily Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to Gardens beneath which rivers flow; while those who reject Allah will enjoy (this world) and eat as cattle eat; and the Fire will be their abode.” (Qur’an chapter 47 verse 12)

The people of Hell will not be allowed to die and rest, because death will have already been slain in front of their eyes. Thus, they will live an eternal life of misery and humiliation – a life worse than death! Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “But as for those who disbelieve, for them is fire of hell; it taketh not complete effect upon them so that they can die, nor is its torment lightened for them. Thus We punish every ingrate.” (Qur’an chapter 35 verse 36) The skins of the disbelievers will be completely burnt in Hell. Their skins will continuously be renewed so that the disbelievers will continue to taste the pain. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Those who reject Our Signs We shall soon cast into the fire: as often as their skins are roasted through We shall change them for fresh skins that they may taste the penalty: for Allah is Exalted in Power Wise.” (Qur’an chapter 4 verse 56) The people of Hell will eat and drink, but what kind of food and drink! Their food will not satisfy their hunger, and their drink will not quench their thirst – rather, they will both add to their pain and suffering. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: 92

Choice is Yours “They will receive no food, except a poisonous and thorny plant that neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.” (Qur’an chapter 88 verses 6-7) In addition their food will be filthy. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “So no friend hath he here this Day. Nor hath he any food except the corruption from the washing of wounds. Which none do eat but those in sin.” (Qur’an 69:35-37) Furthermore, their drink will be so hot that it will burn and cut their stomach and intestines to pieces. And when they beg for something to cool down their roasting bodies, they will only receive more dirty boiling water on their heads and faces that will add to their agony. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Say: (It is) the truth from the Lord of you (all). Then whosoever will, let him believe, and whosoever will, let him disbelieve. Lo! We have prepared for disbelievers Fire. Its tent encloseth them. If they ask for relief, they will be relieved with water like molten lead which burneth the faces. Wretched is the drink and evil is the resting place!” (Qur’an chapter 18 verse 29) While the people of Paradise will be enjoying splendid garments and lavish jewelry, the people of Hell will be confined in garments of fire and iron shackles and chains. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “These are the two adversaries (the believers and disbelievers) who dispute with each other about their Rabb: as for the disbelievers, garments of Fire will be cut out for them, boiling water will be poured over their heads.” (Qur’an chapter 22 verse 19) And Allah ( ) says: “Now, if there is anything that feels strange, then strange is their saying: “What! When we will become dust, could we then be raised to a new life again?” They are the people who have denied their Rabb, they are the ones who will have yokes around their necks and they are the ones who will be the inmates of hellfire to live therein forever.” (Qur’an 13 verse 5) 93

Choice is Yours The disbelievers will beg of the people of Paradise to give them some of their food or drink. But even though it is so horrible, it will be hard to avoid it because of the desires that surround it. Desires attract people to this venomous place – except for those who have clear sight and ability to distinguish between falsehood and truth.

slam is an Arabic word which comes from the word ‘Salaam’ which means ‘Peace’. It also means submission to the will of Allah - the Almighty God. In short Islam means peace acquired by submitting ones will to Allah ( ). In fact, Islam is the oldest religion on the face of the earth. Islam is a religion since time immemorial. It is a religion of the very first human on earth. Qur’an is the only religious scripture that is in its original form since the time of its revelation about 1425 years back. No other religious book has remained untampered, uncorrupted or uninterpolated for such a long time. [For example: Bible - King James Version - 66 books Bible - Roman Catholic - 73 books Bible - Good news - 81 books or 87 books. The complete Bible, i.e. the Old Testament and New Testament put together, contains 73 books. However, the Protestant Bible i.e. the King James Version, contains only 66 books as they consider 7 books of the old testament to be ‘apocrypha’, i.e. of doubtful authority. Therefore the Old Testament of the Catholics contains 46 books and that of Protestants 39 books. However the New Testament of both these sects contains 27 books. The King James Version of the Bible considered as most authentic and popular Bible of the world has been revised about more than five times because it had severe defects.

They renamed King James Version as "Revised Standard Version" and when we read the PREFACE of this Revised Standard Version, they write in Paragraph no.7, "Yet the King James Version has grave defects." More shockingly they confess about the mistakes in the New Testament in paragraph no.18 and write, “The King James Version of the New Testament was based upon a Greek text that was marred by mistakes, containing the accumulated errors of fourteen centuries of manuscript copying." 32 eminent scholars of Christianity backed by 50 denominations have removed the verse from 1st John - 5:7 considering it to be an interpolation, concoction and corruption in the word of God. If one read the non- revised King James Version, we find the verse in 1st John - 5:7 but on reading Revised Standard Version we can find that 1st John - 5:8 has become 1st john - 5:7. Similarly if we read Gospel of John – 3:16 we find Jesus referred to as ‘begotten son of God’ but the word ‘begotten’ is removed in the Revised Standard Version. If we read King James Version- Gospel of Mark – chapter 16 has verse 1 – 20. Howbeit they buried him in the city of David, but not in the sepulchres of the kings”. (2nd Chronicles 21:20-21) “(Son)Forty and two years old [was] Ahaziah when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also [was] Athaliah the daughter of Omri”. (2nd Chronicles 22:2 contradicts) Father was thrity two years when he began to reign. He reigned for eight years and dies at the age of forty. Immediately son takes over and began to reign at the age of forty two. How can the son be two years older than the father ? 2. The age of Ahaziah when he began to reign.

“Forty and two years old [was] Ahaziah when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also [was] Athaliah the daughter of Omri”. (2nd Chronicles 22:2) “Two and twenty years old [was] Ahaziah when he began
to reign; and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name [was] Athaliah, the daughter of Omri king of Israel”. (2nd kings 8:26) Was Ahaziah forty two years or Twenty two years when he began to reign. Either one of the two is wrong or both are wrong.

One of the two is wrong or both of them are wrong. 4. How many children Michal the daughter of Saul have? “Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death”. Choice is Yours The original text that was read by the companions of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him written in Arabic language is preserved and maintained till date. The Qur’an is the only religious scripture on the face of the earth that is memorized by Muslims of about 6 years of age and above. Moreover, the copy of the Qur’an written by the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is still preserved. One such copy is still preserved in a museum in London. The last prophet and messenger is Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets; and Allah is Aware of all things.” (Qur’an chapter 33 verse 40) There have been many generations of people since Aadam peace be upon him. In every generation, there have been many nations spread all over Earth. Allah ( ) would not neglect any of them. He made sure that all of them received guidance. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Certainly We have sent you (O Muhammad) with the Truth as a bearer of good news and as a Warner, for there has not been a nation which has not had a Warner.” (Qur’an chapter 35 verse 24) “And for every nation there is a messenger.” (Qur’an chapter 10 verse 47) “By Allah! We sent messengers before you (O Muhammad) to other nations; but shaitan made their deeds seem fair to them so they did not believe, he is their patron today, and they shall have a painful punishment.” (Qur’an chapter 16 verse 63) From the above, we realize that a large prophets must have passed over Earth between Muhammad (peace be upon them). We do not them. Allah ( ) mentions some of his prophets number of Aadam and know all of but not all. 99

Choice is Yours Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Revelations were also sent to those messengers whom We have already mentioned to you and to those whose name We have not mentioned;” (Qur’an chapter 4 verse 164) Allah ( ) tells us that He sent revelations to each one of His messengers. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: Say: “We believe in Allah and that which is revealed to us; and what was revealed to Ibrahim (Abraham), Isma’il (Ishmael), Ishaq (Isaac), Ya’qoob (Jacob) and their descendants, and that which was given to Musa (Moses), Isa (Jesus) and other Prophets from their Rabb. We do not discriminate any of them, and to Allah we have surrendered ourselves (in Islam).” (Qur’an chapter 2 verse 136) “O Muhammad, We have sent revelations to you just as We sent to Nuh (Noah) and the Prophets who came after him; We also sent revelations to Ibrahim (Abraham), Isma`il (Ishmael), Ishaq (Isaac), Ya’qoob (Jacob), his descendants, Isa (Jesus), Ayub (Job), Yunus (Jonah), Haroon (Aaron) and Sulaiman (Solomon), and to Dawood (David) We gave the Zaboor(Psalms).” (Qur’an chapter 4 verse 163) Allah’s ( ) revelations are teachings that He told to His prophets to guide their nations and show them what to do in their life. Allah ( ) mentions in the above verse that He revealed the Zaboor to Daawood (peace be upon him). Similarly, Allah ( ) says to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): “He has revealed to you this Book with the Truth, confirming the scripture which preceded it, as He revealed the Taurat (Torah) and Injeel (Gospel).” (Qur’an chapter 4 verse 3) Allah ( ) did not tell us the names of all the books that He sent down to His messengers. He only told us of 4, namely Taurat (Old Testament), Zaboor (Psalms), Injeel (new testament) and Qur’an. The scripture that Allaah ( ) sent down to Ibraaheem(Abraham) (peace be upon him) were 100

Choice is Yours in the form of sheets(suhufs). In early times, there was no paper. The people wrote on leather, wood, and other things. They would usually write on separate sheets or leafs that were not bound into books. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “This surely is mentioned in the early scripture - the sheets of Ibraaheem and Moosaa.” (Qur’an chapter 87 verses 18-19) In addition to not following Allah’s ( ) books, some people do more evil: they change the books so that no one would be able to tell what Allah ( ) actually said. This is one of the greatest sins and acts of Kufr (disbelief ) Some of the men made up writings and said that these writings were part of scriptures. They changed Allah’s ( ) words, and this made Him extremely angry with them. Allah ( ) says: “Woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say: “This is from Allah,” so that they may sell it for a petty price! Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they have earned.” (Qur’an chapter 2 verse 79) Anyone who changes Allah’s ( ) words deserves a great punishment, especially when they do it in order to please the wicked people and gain some money. Allah ( ) ordered the people of the scripture to accept the Qur’an and follow it. If they do not do this, He will severely punish them. Allah says in Qur’an: “O people of the Book (Jews and Christians)! Believe in what We have now revealed (The Qur’an), confirming your own scriptures, before We obliterate your faces and turn them backward, or lay Our curse on you as We laid Our curse on the Sabbath-breakers: and remember that Allah’s command is always executed.” (Qur’an chapter 4 verse 47) The last book from Allah ( ) is the Qur’an. All are required to believe in it, and follow it. As for the previous books from Allah ( ), we should believe that they were sent down by Allah ( ). At one time, they were correct. But they 101

Choice is Yours were later changed by evil people. Because of this, we cannot follow them. Also, there is no need to follow them because Qur’an covers all of their teachings and more. The people of the scripture have changed their books. The books that they now have are not exactly what were revealed by Allah ( ). They contain some truth mixed with some falsehood. When we hear or read something from the previous scriptures, we should be careful and should not quickly say that it is right or wrong. There are three possibilities, 1. If what we read agrees with Islam, it may be truly from Allah ( ). But we cannot be sure that Allah ( ) said it. 2. If it does not clearly agree or disagree with Islam, We say that it could possibly be Allah’s ( ) saying, but we cannot be sure of this either. 3. If it disagrees with Islam, it cannot be from Allah ( ). Allah ( ) promised to protect the Qur’an from all harm and changes. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “Surely We have revealed this reminder (The Qur’an); and We will surely preserve it Ourself.” (Qur’an chapter 15 verse 9) And Allah ( ) tells us that no falsehood can come to the Qur’an from any direction. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: “No falsehood can approach it from before or from behind. It is a revelation from the One Who is Wise and Praiseworthy.” (Qur’an chapter 41 verse 42) Allah ( ) fulfilled his promise and preserved the Qur’an. The Qur’an is now exactly the same as it was revealed to the prophet. Unlike the other scriptures, Qur’an is the same in any part of the world. Allah ( ) tells the people of the scripture to come to a common thing which is present in the scriptures. Allah ( ) says in the Qur’an: Say: “O people of the Book! Let us get together on what is common between us and you: that we shall worship none but Allah; that we shall not associate any partners with Him; that we shall not take from among ourselves 102

Choice is Yours any lords beside Allah.” If they reject your invitation then tell them: “Bear witness that we are Muslims (who have surrendered to Allah).” (Qur’an chapter 3 verse 64) The common thing which Allah ( ) mainly emphasizes is to worship none but Allah ( ), not to associate gods with Him in worship and not to consider any save Him as God. Let us see if such common terms are present in the previous scriptures that we know and from those we do not know.

llah ( ) is our Creator and Lord. We must worship Him because He is the only true God. We must learn that He has the greatest power and knowledge because He can take care of us and everything else. Therefore believing in Allah ( ) means three important things: 1. 2. Allah ( ) is the Creator and Master of everything. He is the true Lord. Allah ( ) has the best and greatest qualities. Many of His great qualities are clear from the greatness and beauty of the things that He created. No one deserves our complete love and obedience but Allah ( ). We need to obey Him and serve Him in the best way. We need to worship Him in the best way. We need to worship Him as He tells us. He is our only true God.

A person without this belief is totally lost and confused. He behaves like a scared rabbit in the middle of a thunderstorm, running here and there without a purpose or an aim. A person who knows Allah ( ) is clear about himself and his purpose in life. He walks in sure steps in the right direction. He lives a happy life because he knows what he should do and how to do it. When one truly understand and believe in these three things, his faith will be good and strong. Whoever seeks other than what Allah ( ) has legislated, it will not be accepted from him, and in the hereafter he will be one of the losers. Allah ( ) says: “If anyone is looking for a religion other than Islam, then let it be known that it will not be accepted from him; and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.” (Qur’an 3 verse 85) Allah ( ) stated that if the people do not believe in His messenger (peace be upon him) and follow not what 108

It will not be accepted of them, even if they paid the earth’s full of gold as ransom. Allah ( ) says: “Guard yourselves against the day on which one soul shall not avail another, no intercession shall be accepted, no ransom shall be taken and no help shall be given.” (Qur’an 2 verse 48) Whoever does an evil deed and abides purposefully in his error, coming on the day of resurrection with no good deeds, only evil deeds, then he will be among the people of the fire. And those who believe in Allah ( ) and His messengers (peace be upon them) and perform good deeds that confirm with the Islamic Law, they shall be among the people of Paradise. Allah ( ) says: “Those who commit evil and become encircled in sin are the inmates of Hellfire; they shall live there forever. As for those who believe and do good deeds, they will be the residents of Paradise and live there forever.” (Qur’an 2 verses 81-82) Allah ( ) points out the insignificance of the idols and the ignorance of those who worship them. Even if all the idols and false gods were to come together to create a fly, they would not be able to do that. They are unable to create a fly and, moreover, they are unable to resist it to take revenge against it if it were to take anything from the good and perfumed thing on which it lands. If they wanted to recover that, they would not be able to, even though the fly is the weakest and most insignificant of Allah’s ( ) creatures. Allah ( ) says: “O mankind! Here is an example for your understanding, so listen to it carefully. Those deities whom you call besides Allah, cannot create a single fly, even if they all combined their forces, rather, if a fly snatches away anything from them they cannot even get it back; how 109

Choice is Yours feebleminded are the suppliants and how powerless are those whom they supplicate!” (Qur’an 22 verse 73) When a person dies while still being a disbeliever and polytheist, his sorrow and repentance shall not avail him. If he were to ransom himself, even with the earth’s fill of gold, it will not be accepted from him. Joining others in worship with Allah ( ) is a great Zulm (wrong) indeed. And Allah ( ) says not to force anyone to become Muslim, for Islam is plain and clear, and its proofs and evidence are plain and clear. Therefore, there is no need to force anyone to embrace Islam. Rather, whoever Allah ( ) directs to Islam, opens his heart for it and enlightens his mind, will embrace Islam with certainty. Allah ( ) say: Certainly, We have destined many Jinns and human beings for hell; those are the ones who have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, they have ears with which they do not hear. They are like animals - or even worse than them, because they are those who are heedless. (Qur’an chapter 7 verse 179) NOW IT IS UPTO AN INDIVIDUAL
