1. General
The FOMAX is a secure server router. It connects the Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) devices to the aircraft over
a secure Internet Protocol (IP) router
The FOMAX also gives:
- A Wi-Fi connection from the EFBs to the aircraft parameters and to the board/ground communication
channel
- An acquisition function to decode and keep the ARINC 717 Digital Aircraft Condition Monitoring System
(ACMS) Recorder (DAR) frames and then send them to the ground through the FOMAX communication
channel.
The FOMAX unit makes air-ground-air data communication possible, is an interface with the avionic
subsystems and supplies application server functions.

(2) Air/ground interfaces
There are three primary air/ground interfaces:
(a) The air/ground wireless-communication interfaces:
For the air/ground communication, the FOMAX uses the cellular gatelink with one antenna
for Airbus and one antenna for the Airline.
Cellular gatelink for Airbus is part of the basic aircraft definition but other communication
devices are optional for the Airlines. For their activation, it is necessary to use the FOMAX
configuration and the FOMAX Airline customization.

(b) PDL:
- The PDL is the source of the data loading process. It is connected to the FOMAX with
the ARINC 615-A plug.
(c) PMAT:
- The PMAT is the source of all the FOMAX maintenance/administrative tasks.

(3) Ground segments

The FOMAX is a service provider for Pilot EFB.
The FOMAX system supplies some software modules to install into the Airline ground segments
that follow:
- Airline FOMAX VPN end-point for secured communications between the aircraft and the
Airline Ground
- Secure file transfer protocol server to retrieve data from the aircraft applications
- GODART tool which receives the security assurance requirements for suppliers, quick
access recorder, DAR and ACMS reports
- Monitoring Application Programming Interface (API) to monitor aircraft connectivity and
activity with the ground
- Other FOMAX tools (monitoring Human-Machine Interface (HMI) or maintenance HMI, etc.).
B. FOMAX Software Components
The FOMAX has the software components that follow:
- FOMAX core software-component (64TA/SW1)
- FOMAX configuration-data software-component (64TA/SW2)
- Airline FOMAX customization-data software-component (64TA/SW3)
- Airbus FOMAX customization-data software-component (64TA/SW4).
(1) FOMAX core software-component (64TA/SW1)
The FOMAX core software-component is the operational software that makes the FOMAX operate
correctly. It makes the data loading of the ARINC 665 field-loadable software-component
possible. It includes the Operating System (OS) (SE-Linux), the basic services and commercial
off-the-shelf software.
The FOMAX core software-component contains the definition of the zero-state. It gives the
default condition of the unit until the configuration data and customization data-software
components are uploaded and activated.
The FOMAX zero-state has the end-user functions that follow:
- Data loading
- Health monitoring and web API.
All the other functions are stopped.
The FOMAX is in the zero-state in the conditions that follow:
- If the FOMAX core software-component is uploaded, and the FOMAX customization data
and/or the FOMAX configuration-data software is not uploaded
- If a new FOMAX core software-component is installed
- If the applicable "zero-state" flag is activated in the uploaded customization software
component.
(2) FOMAX configuration-data software-component (64TA/SW2):
- It configures the FOMAX core-software parameters to adapt the FOMAX to the Airbus
aircraft configuration and to optimize the FOMAX.
- It is an Airbus-approved software component uploaded as an ARINC 665 field-loadable
software-component. It gives the settings that follow:
(a) The network configuration:
- The addressing parameters and rules applicable to each interface
(b) The cabin router and ATSU interface settings
(c) The DAR frame speed-adjustment
(d) The activation/deactivation of the optional functions:
- The SATCOM and the Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System
(ACARS).
(3) Airline FOMAX customization-data software-component (64TA/SW3):
- It contains FOMAX core software-parameters to adapt the FOMAX to the Airline
requirements.
- It is a User Modifiable Software (UMS).
- The operator must upload it to the FOMAX without the aid of Airbus, Rockwell Collins or the
other authorities.
- The Airline customization does not change the Airbus customization.
This software component gives the settings that follow:
(a) The Wi-Fi access-point Service Set Identifier (SSID) and the password
(b) The Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card identification and the password for the cellular
gatelink

(c) The routing policy:

- The communication channel priority can change with the location and the flight phase.
(d) Virtual private network-settings for the board/ground communication with the related
certificate
(e) Virtual DAR (VDAR) recording start and stop conditions, compression and encryption
settings.
(4) Airbus FOMAX customization-data software-component (64TA/SW4):
- It contains FOMAX core software-parameters to adapt the FOMAX to the Airbus
requirements.
- It is a UMS.
- The operator must upload it to the FOMAX without the aid of Airbus, Rockwell Collins or the
other authorities.
- The Airbus customization does not modify the Airline customization.
This software component gives the settings that follow:
- The Wi-Fi access-point SSID and the password
- The SIM card identification and the password for the cellular gatelink
- The routing policy: the communication channel priority can change with the location and
the flight phase (only cellular gatelink is managed by Airbus).
(a) The virtual private network-settings for the board/ground communication with the related
certificate
(b) The VDAR recording start and stop conditions, compression and encryption settings.
(c) The list of parameters received on A429.
C. FOMAX Features
(1) The FOMAX has:
(a) The aircraft parameter-acquisition function
(b) The A834-ADBP aircraft parameter for the mobile devices
(c) The Wi-Fi access point in the cockpit
(d) The communication functions that follow:

2 Administration function manages the FOMAX status, hardware and software part
numbers
3 FOMAX monitoring and log management.
4. Power Supply
In normal conditions, the FOMAX is supplied with 115VAC-400Hz, thus it starts and stops with the aircraft.
The FOMAX includes a reset function through a discrete input. This function is not used, but it is possible to
do a reset of the FOMAX as follows:
- With a circuit breaker, or
- With a software function.
An electronic maintenance device that contains the Local Maintenance Function (LMF) application connected
to the FOMAX, starts the reset.
In this condition, the reset of the FOMAX will occur only at software level. If this electronic maintenance
device does not use this module, the "reset" software function does not operate.

with the hypertext transfer protocol.
2 The ARINC 834 bus:
- The FOMAX gives access to the ARINC 429 data, the discrete status and the
platform parameters through the ARINC 834-4 ADBP protocol. The EFB
components use this interface to retrieve the parameters that are necessary for
the flight operation applications and to set the communication with the ground.
