Q1: Define work?
Ans: Work is done when a force acting on a body displaces it in the direction of a force.
Work is a scalar quantity .It depends on the force acting on a body, displacement of the body and the angle
between them.
Mathematically; work done = Force x displacement
W= F S
Q2: Define Joule?
Ans: The amount of work is one joule when a force of one Newton displaces a body through one meter in
the direction of force.
1J=1Nx1m
1 KJ = 1000 J = 103 J
1 M.J = 1000000 J = 106 J
Q3: Define Energy?
Ans: A body possesses energy if it is capable to do work. E.g water running down the stream has the ability
to do work, so it possesses energy. Energy can be transformed from one form to another
Q4: Write form of energy?
Ans: Energy exists in various forms such as, Mechanical energy, Heat energy, light energy, sound energy,
electrical energy, chemical energy and nuclear energy etc.
Q5: Define kinetic energy?
Ans: The energy possessed by a body due to its motion is called kinetic energy. For example energy of
moving air and energy of running water has kinetic energy.
1
K.E = ------- m v2
2
Q6: Define potential energy?
Ans: The energy possessed by a body due to its Position is called its potential energy. For example stored
water possesses potential energy due to its height. Similarly a stretched bow has potential energy due to its
stretched position.
P.E = mgh
Q7: Which energy is released by nuclear power plant?
Ans: A nuclear power plant uses the energy released in nuclear reactor such as fission to generate electric
power
Q8: Define efficiency?
Ans: Efficiency of a system is the ratio of required form of energy obtained from a system as output to the
total energy given to it as input. Required form of output
% Efficiency = --------------------------------------- x 100
Total input energy

## Q9: Define power?

Ans: Power is defined as the rate of doing work. Power is a scalar quantity. SI unit of power is watt.
Mathematically, Work done
Power P = --------------------------
Time taken
W
Power P = --------------------------
T

## Q10: Define watt?

Ans: The power of a body is one watt, if it does work at the rate of one joule per second.
Bigger unit of power are kilowatt (kW),mega watt ( MW) etc.

1 kW = 1000 W = 103 W
1 MW = 1000000 W = 106 W
1 hp = 746 W

## Q10: Why are fossil fuels called non-renewable resources?

Ans: Fossil fuels are known as non-renewable resources because it took millions of years for them to attain
the present form. Examples of fossil fuels are coal, petroleum etc.

## Q11: When does a force do work? Explain

Ans: When a force acting on a body displaces it through some distance “ S” in the direction of force , it does
work on a body. Sometimes the force and displacement do not have the same direction. In this case , force
“ F” is making an angle θ with the surface on which body is moved, Resolving F into its perpendicular components
Fx and Fy as;
Fx = F cos θ
Fy = F sin θ
In this case, force and displacement are not parallel then only the X- component “ Fx” parallel to the surface
causes the body move on the surface and Y- component Fy.
Hence;
W=FxS
W = ( F Cos θ ) S
W = FS Cos θ
Q12: Why do we need energy?
Ans: (1): Energy is used by us to perform many activities of life.
(2): Energy is necessary for running and walking for humans
Q13: Which form of energy is most preferred and why?
Ans: Solar energy is most preferred energy because sunlight does not pollute the environment in any way.

Q14: Name five devices that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy?
Ans: These are as under;

(1) Juicer Machine (2) Washing machine (3) Electric motor (4) Ceiling fan (5) Electric grinder

## Q15: Name a device that converts mechanical energy in to electrical energy?

Ans: Generator is a device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.

## Q1: Define Kinetic energy and drive its equation?

Ans: The energy possessed by a body due to its motion is called kinetic energy. For example energy of
moving air and energy of running water has kinetic energy.
1
K.E = ------- m v2
2
Explanation: Consider a body of mass “ m” moving with velocity “ V” . The body stops after moving through
some distances “ S” due to some opposing force such as force of friction acting on it. The body possesses
kinetic energy and is capable to do work against opposing force “F” until all of its kinetic energy is used up.
Since , K.E = FS ----------------------------(1)
Vi = V
Vf = 0
As F = ma
F
a=- -----------
m

Since motion is opposed, hence, Value of acceleration “a” will be negative, so using 3rd equation of motion
2 a s = Vf2 – Vi 2
F
2 (- ------- ) S = (0)2 – (V)2
m

F
m/2 x 2 (- ------- ) S = – V2 x m/2 ( Multiply both sides by “m” and divide by “2” we get)
m
1
F S = ------ mv2 ------------------------------(2)
2

1
K.E = ------ mv2
