Go figure: Curly cherry
provides that little extra
By Jennifer Hicks

C herry hasn’t lost any of its luster,

according to hardwood suppliers
interviewed by Woodshop News.
But most keep a small supply of
figured cherry to really make a design statement.
“Regular cherry has a beautiful color and all
that but when you add that figure, it just adds
a tremendous amount of life to the wood,” says
Lou Irion of Irion Lumber in Wellsboro, Pa.
“Obviously the straight grain cherry is al-
ways more popular because for one thing
there’s more of it. Less than 1 percent of cher-
ry cut has good figure. But the difference is
people tend to get excited about the curly
cherry, much more than they do with the
straight cherry.”
Steve King of Yankee Pine Lumber Corp.
in Rowley, Mass., says that because figured
cherry often comes in small batches, one-off
pieces also tend be the only option.
“I sold some figured the other day and it was
just enough to do a bar top,” says King. “We
sell it when we get it. When furniture people

a time, you can have longer ducting runs, es-
pecially longer flex hose runs which are a real
killer when it comes to dust collection perfor-
mance,” says product manager Mike Ledda.
Even better, Letta says the flexibility of the
Smart Boost system eliminates the need for
an oversized system, a huge cost saver in
any woodshop.
“If you’re stuck with a fixed RPM system,
you’re essentially stuck with that performance
when you built that shop. So if your tools
change or your ducting layout changes, your
performance is based around what you had
to start. And that can essentially form a choke
point for how you’re building out your sys-
tem,” adds Ledda.
Smart Boost is also available on Oneida’s
High Vacuum dust collection system specifi-

lengths of flex hose and mixed dust port sizes
are common and high-static pressures are es-
sential for maintaining a clean cutterhead, ac-
cording to the company.
All of Oneida’s collectures have true HEPPA
filtration that offer up to twice the static
pressure of competing dust collectors, notes
Ledda. The Dust Gorilla Pro models range in
price from $2,799 to $3,179.

Tooling around
New aggregate heads, chucks, spindles and router bits
can increase your digital fabrication capabilities

By John English

I
f you didn’t catch it at AWFS last summer, Benz Inc., (benztooling.
com) introduced a couple of adjustable angle head systems at the
show. The Flex 5 and Flex 5 Plus were previously available only
in Europe, and are now being sold in North America. What makes
them unique is their ability to change output angles in seconds, using
the movement of the C axis. An onboard braking system locks the
output angle in the desired position and, once locked, the C axis can be
used to rotate the aggregate head within the horizontal plane. These are
heavy-duty, automatic, adjustable angle heads with oil bath lubrication.
With a maximum input speed of 15,000 rpm and a 1 to 1 gear ratio,
both heads are ideally suited for sawing, drilling and routing. They
provide a sawing swivel range from 0 to 90 degrees and a routing
swivel range from 0 to 100 degrees. These heads cannot be retrofitted,
so woodshops interested in outfitting a CNC router with either one
should contact an OEM machine builder to ask for additional details
and pricing.
GDP/GUHDO (guhdo.com) has introduced a new generation indus-
trial diamond (PCD) router bit. The two-flute opposite shear design
on a solid carbide tool body runs quiet and it also provides an excel-
lent finish (top and bottom) on double sided panels, according to
the company. Suitable for nesting operations and feed speeds in the
range of 500 ipm, the solid tip design ensures a consistently smooth
edge. The company says that ordering this tool on an HSK heat shrink
tool holder can increase its life by up to 30 percent. Sizes are available
from 8mm to 1/2 .
The company has also introduced a cost-effective solution for pro-
totypes and small runs – it’s a new corrugated head adapter for CNC
(called the Series 4524) that comes in 40, 60 and 80mm widths and is
supplied on an HSK-F63 heat shrink tool holder for use with 5/16 cor-
rugated knives. The carrier body is steel because the corrugations ma-
chined into an aluminum head would eventually wear out, and knives
could become dislodged.
Amana Tool (amanatool.com) has introduced a couple of new afford-
able, high performance, heavy-duty spoilboard inserts. They are the
3-11/32” diameter RC-2259 and the 2” diameter RC-2255, which can
also be used to chamfer edges and surface timber slabs. The 2259 has
four-sided solid carbide insert knives (rotatable), and it can plunge to
1/4” and then start resurfacing. It is also capable of removing very thin
layers of material (less than 0.001” per pass).

num and plastics.
And CMT Orange Tools (cmtutensili.com)
has introduced a device that throws dust up
from a CNC cutter into an extractor hose.
Known as a KDE, it can be easily installed
and removed as a clamping nut. The health
and safety benefits are obvious, and it also
improves tool performance and cut quality by
removing excess waste that the tool doesn’t
have to re-cut numerous times. It is recom-
mended for nesting and routing operations,
and simply replaces the standard clamping
nut. It works on many standard collet chucks
and router bits and is available for some spe-
cialty collets. A thick ceramic coat gives KDE
an anti-corrosion, anti-friction and ant-static
surface. The tool body is a light alloy, and
the device delivers good results even at low
revolutions: it works from 6,000 to 20,000 rpm
in chipboard, coated chipboard, MDF, solid
surfaces, OSB and HPL.

Chucks and spindles

The Swedish company ETP Transmission
AB (etp.se) has been in business for more
than 35 years and has recently introduced
the G2 Combo 16/30 HSK 63F. The G2 lets
a woodshop enjoy all the benefits of using
a hydraulic chuck for router bits and a hy-
draulic arbor for profile tools, at the same
time. One can also use reduction sleeves in
the 16mm chuck, and run several smaller,
frequently used shaft sizes.
Precision Drive Systems (spindlerepair.com)
supplies and repairs spindle motors nation-
wide from its headquarters in North Carolina.
Now the company has a new West Coast loca-
tion in Arlington, Wash., and it has also added
an online store. By the way, PDS has also
begun offering repairs on an extensive range
of main and scoring saw arbors.
Last fall, the German manufacturer Leuco

I use shellac as a binder because it allows me to erase whatever I have
done by simply wiping with a rag and alcohol. Another trick is after
I am satisfied with the color, I seal it with a light coat of lacquer. This
allows me to work on the second layer, but I can still erase it without
affecting the first layer.
Most touchups require two or three layers of color, working from the
lightest to darkest. I add some fine graining with the brush or a grain-
ing pen, which is a fine-tipped marker with similar pigments.

Other methods
There are a variety of application techniques you can use in addition
to brushing. You can dab with your finger or rag to blend in or blur
the painted line. Adding a puddle of alcohol before or after is great for
blurring or creating a gradient of color, much like water coloring.
A common mistake is to apply too many layers, which will muddy
the match or leave a noticeable mound.
If your existing finish is shellac, color matching and erasing becomes
more tedious. I recommend testing the color match using a clear piece
of Mylar on top of your project wood.
Most woods change in color over time, so you might have a perfect
match one day and later the touchup looks lighter. With a high chatoy-
ance wood, color touchups are almost impossible. Chatoyance is the
shimmery, three-dimensional effect that you see in curly maple or ribbon-
striped sapele. The effect is caused by how light reflects off the grain,
making the wood look lighter or darker depending on the viewing angle.
In both scenarios, I don’t recommend trying to match the wood. In-
stead, I match an existing defect like a knot or mineral stain.
Other touchup tools include markers and colored pencils. Markers
are available with or without a finish and are great for onsite repairs.
Unfortunately, the tips harden with use and its more difficult to blend
the finish. Markers without finish require a protective coating. Colored
pencils are a good substitute in a pinch, but it is important to get soft
lead types.
With these simple techniques and some practice, most repairs can be
concealed and fixed with minimal effort.

While there have been some
bumps in the road, Damon
Rebhahn’s custom cabinet
shop in Atlantic Beach, Fla.,
has been going strong for
nearly 25 years

By Jennifer Hicks

H
ard work and dedication has paid off for Damon Rebhahn,
owner of River City Custom Cabinetry in Atlantic Beach,
Fla., a coastal city adjacent to Jacksonville. Specializing in
kitchens, baths and other home cabinetry products, his
company offers turnkey services to the residential market.
Rebhahn started the business in 1994 at 23 years old when he
rented a 3,000-sq.-ft. space and pounded the pavement for custom-
ers. It has grown to have more than 30 employees and $3 million in
annual sales.
“It took a lot of hard work, a lot of late nights but I wasn’t tied
down to a family at that time. Obviously when you start something
like this you’ve got to give 110 percent, so the first three to four
years I worked until midnight, sometimes 2 a.m.,” says Rebhahn.

STARTING OFF
Originally from La Crosse, Wis., Rebhahn moved to Jacksonville
in sixth grade where his father was stationed in the U.S. Navy. He
took an interest in woodworking in middle school, participating in
state competitions and making an elaborate grandfather’s clock. In
high school, he made reproductions of Queen Anne furniture.
Through a work study program in grades 11 and 12, he secured
a job as a finisher at a cabinet shop. He also worked in the shop’s
building and production departments while attending classes at the
University of North Florida.
When a friend’s parents sought his expertise building their house,
he didn’t think twice about opening his own shop. He used that job
and several references to gain new clients and the work snowballed.
By 2001, he built his 15,000-sq.-ft. shop from the ground up.
“Mostly all of our clients are residential builders and interior
designers for homes around here and in Ponte Vedra Beach, with
some down by Palm Beach and a few in Orlando. It’s all residential.
We don’t get into commercial. The average homes we work start at
$800,000 and go up into the $5-6 million range.”

TURNKEY SHOP
Offering full design, build, finish and installation services, nothing
is subbed out at River City.
“We used to sub out doors and other components but we had is-
sues bringing those prefabricated parts here with this humidity. In
2003, we started manufacturing our own,” says Rebhahn.

The transition began when we tried to make those old

Decorative accents
In a throwback to hand tools, today’s designers are remembering that
carved and molded accents can be painted. But unlike the corbels and
columns of old, this generation of accents is milled on CNCs or cast in
foam and plastic. That means the parts are more reliably identical, mak-
ing them easier to incorporate and build around.
Osborne Wood Products (osbornewood.com) has recently added five
very attractive shelf brackets that feature a hardwood top and back
plate with a curved front. Inside the triangle formed by these elements
is one of several scrollwork high-density fiber plates. They come in
cherry, oak and maple, and a paintable alder version.
Brown Wood (brownwoodinc.com) has collected thousands of turned
and carved decorative wood components in its Designs of Distinction
catalog. The company has been supplying woodshops since 1927.
Designers who are reaching to outfit cabinets in the most modern
of styles might want to think about adding a few aluminum and glass
doors to their casework. Mixed in with painted or laminated surfaces,
they hint at industrial chic. Element Designs (element-designs.com) has
added several new inserts and finishes to its contemporary product
lines this year. Among them are leather inserts from EcoDomo and a
new matte black finish, called Onyx.
Sliding barn doors are back, too. Even big box stores are carrying
hardware kits, and a sliding door added to a work or living space can
pick up the style and finish of surrounding casework. Outwater (outwa-
ter.com) offers a number of kits online.
A. Lewis Manufacturing Co. has recently introduced a couple of
dozen new embossed moldings available in most Appalachian hard-
woods plus alder, mahogany and pine. Lewis also manufactures cus-
tom profiles and produces rosettes and a number of rope moldings. Glideware’s pull-out storage for pots and pans.
Electrical upgrades
In the age of smart phones and tech hungry clients, charging ports
that hide in drawers or pop out of countertops are becoming main-
stream. Nobody does that better than Doug Mockett & Co. (mockett.
com), a supplier that also has a lot of answers when it comes to hiding
cables. The catalog is chock full of wireless chargers, pop-up power
docks, and under desk units. One of the newest additions is the PC-
S77A-23G, a 20-amp outlet built into a pop-up cylinder that is mounted
in a kitchen countertop.
LED lighting is also hot right now and Outwater offers a wide range
of options. For example, the company has a closet rod kit that can be
customized to any length in 2” increments. The lights are actually in-
side the rod itself, so when they are turned on they illuminate the cloth-
ing that hangs beneath.
On a larger scale, Hera Lighting (heralighting.com) designs, develops
and manufactures lighting solutions specifically for cabinets, furniture
and displays. Among its new offerings is FlexSheet-LED, which is ex-
actly what it sounds like – a flexible, customizable sheet containing sev-
eral small LED lights. It comes in two different light outputs and can be
cut along grid marks to create custom sizes and shapes. Multiple sheets
can even be tiled together to illuminate large surface areas. The flexibil-
ity of the sheet also allows for easy installation on curved surfaces.
A product from Tresco Lighting (trescolighting.com) has similar ap-
plications but is built in a different way. The company, which has been
part of Rev-A-Shelf since 2011, offers a dimmable, commercial-grade
Snap panel that is sold in 12” squares. Those in turn can be snapped
(folded and broken along pre-set lines) into 3” squares and connected
back in any configuration using simple connectors.

Marine Diesel Maintenance
& Troubleshooting
The diesel engine is the beating heart of
your vessel, whether you cruise under
power or sail. They are economical and
reliable, yet there are a number of ways in
which they can fail. This course is designed
to impart the mechanical know-how
to venture past the sight of land or
destinations beyond the range of SeaTow.

Boat Handling
For many of us, the most stressful part of
boating is docking. For the first time we
are offering a TrawlerFest staple—Boat
Handling in Close Quarters—online. This
course, which can be taken at your own
pace, will teach you the ins and outs of
handling your boat around docks and
marinas, whether you’re a new boat owner
or have owned one for years.

Fundamentals of Seamanship:
Navigation Rules
Rules of the Road is an in-depth course
that dives into the Navigational Rules of
boating. Instructor Robert Reeder, will
review each rule in detail, citing both inland
and international distinctions, and teaching
the safe operation of both recreational and
commercial vessels in US and International
waters.
