Kedves Nyelvtanuló!

Az Origó középfokú írásbeli angol nyelvvizsgán azt várják a nyelvvizsgázótól,


hogy bizonyítsa, hogy mind az olvasott szöveg értése, mind az íráskészség,
mind pedig az angolról magyarra közvetítés (fordítás) tekintetében
rendelkezik középfokú tudásszinttel. Ez azt jelenti, hogy ha például egy
eredeti angol nyelvű cikket olvasol, azt megfelelően tudod értelmezni,
megtalálni benne a keresett információs elemeket. Az íráskészséget
tekintve, szabatosan fogalmazva, helyes angolsággal meg tudsz írni egy
levelet vagy fogalmazást. Ezen kívül szótár segítségével szépen le tudsz
fordítani egy angol szöveget úgy, hogy az magyarul is jól hangozzon.

Természetesen, a sikeres vizsgához nem tökéletes megoldást kell elérni,


hanem a feladatok összértékét tekintve 60%-ot meghaladó teljesítményt.

Mivel a középfokú nyelvvizsgát megszerezni nem könnyű, érdemes sokat


gyakorolni azokat a feladat típusokat, amelyek előfordulnak a vizsgán.
Minden nyelvvizsgán nagy előnyt jelent, ha ott úgy jelenünk meg, hogy
előtte már nagy feladatmegoldó rutint szereztünk.

Olvasáskészség 1

Olvasás utáni szövegértés készséget mérő feladat. A szöveg után megadott kérdésekre kell válaszolni
magyarul. A válaszoknál térjünk ki a kérdéshez tartozó összes információs elemre.
Ebben a részben a maximálisan elérhető pontszám: 20 pont.

Olvasáskészség 2

Ez egy úgynevezett lyukas szöveg típusú feladat. A szöveg után található elemek (szavak vagy
szókapcsolatok) listájából választva kell kiegészíteni a szöveget. Egy elemet csak egyszer lehet
felhasználni. Figyelem! A listán 12 választható elem van, viszont csak 10 üres hely. Így értelemszerűen 2
elemet nem kell felhasználni.
Ebben a részben a maximálisan elérhető pontszám: 10 pont.

Íráskészség 1

Íráskészséget mérő feladat. Egy kb. 17-20 soros levél írása megadott szempontok alapján. Két téma
lehetőség közül kell egyet kiválasztani, és azt kidolgozni. Az írásnál minden megadott szempontra ki kell
térni, de nem feltétlenül azonos sorrendben. A megoldás értékelése négy szempont figyelembevételével
történik: tartalom, kommunikatív hatás, kifejezésmód és nyelvhelyesség.
A levél írásakor be kell tartani a levél formai előírásait (dátum, megszólítás, üdvözlő formula, aláírás)!
Ebben a részben a maximálisan elérhető pontszám: 20 pont.

Íráskészség 2

Feladat a megadott utasítások alapján egy 8-10 soros szöveg írása. A szöveg típusa lehet: üzenet, rövid
vélemény, értékelés, internetes hozzászólás.
Ebben a részben a maximálisan elérhető pontszám: 10 pont.

Közvetítés

Ebben a részben egy megadott angol nyelvű szöveget kell lefordítanod magyarra. Itt azt kell
bizonyítanod, hogy képes vagy a szöveget tartalmilag pontosan és szöveghűen visszaadni úgy, hogy az a
magyar olvasó számára érthető és különösebb erőfeszítés nélkül követhető legyen.
Ebben a részben a maximálisan elérhető pontszám: 15 pont.

A középfokú írásbeli vizsgán maximálisan elérhető összpontszám: 75 pont. A sikeres vizsgához a


megfelelési határ (60%): 45 pont.

A vizsga feladatainak megoldásához egy- vagy kétnyelvű nyomtatott szótár használható.

Making a difference

Making the transition into college is a challenge even under the best of circumstances.
Imagine how much more difficult it must be when a young person has no family to support
him or her to help pave the way, no "Bank of Mom and Dad" to fall back on, no loved one to
simply listen at the end of a difficult day.
Thousands of young people aging out of the foster care system are in exactly that
position. They share the same hopes, dreams and determination as their peers in traditional
families. Yet, studies show that without support only a handful of the 26,000 teens leaving
foster care after age 18 have a chance of getting a college degree.
The Orphan Foundation of America (OFA) provides former foster children with the
emotional and social support so vital to the success of all college students. OFA relies on the
efforts of individuals and companies. There are several effective ways individuals and firms
can help thousands of young people to make a successful transition into adulthood.
Companies can sponsor an OFA scholarship that will cover the cost of tuition, books
and living expenses for a student struggling to make ends meet and achieve academically at
the same time. Each year, 2,000 young people apply for OFA scholarships funded by
individuals, foundations and corporations.
"The hardest part of coming out of the foster care system is not having a family base,"
says Sharim Grimes, who received a scholarship from OFA and is currently a finance major at
Howard University in Washington, D.C. "There are times you really need to talk to someone,
and you don’t have the proper resources. But OFA has been there every step of the way for
me and thousands of others, and it has definitely made a positive impact in our lives. I am
successful; I’m graduating next year. And I could not have done it without OFA."
It is also a good idea to host an intern at your company through OFA’s InternAmerica
program, which helps foster youth gain real-world job experience and germinate their careers.
Individuals can mentor a student through OFA’s national online volunteer mentoring
program. All mentors are welcome, and there is a special need for male African American
mentors. Through online contact, mentors let young people know that someone cares about
them and is ready to help them cope with the challenges of college.
You can also participate in OFA’s Red Scarf Project by knitting a red scarf or by
donating money. From September through December, the organization collects red scarves to
include in its Valentine’s Day care packages.

India Wins the Asian Space Race to Mars

India has successfully placed a spacecraft into orbit of the “Red Planet.” The spaceship
travelled hundreds of millions of kilometres from Earth over a 10-month period. The
spacecraft will take pictures of the Martian surface. It will also attempt to identify the amount
of methane in the planet’s atmosphere.

Scientists have been following the flight from the command centre of the Indian Space
Research Organization in Bangalore. The spaceship has been named “Mangalyaan,” which
means Mars craft in the Hindi language. The scientists cheered and shook hands as the
spacecraft entered into the orbit of Mars. “If you look at the success rate of missions to Mars,
there have been 51 missions, and more than half of them failed. So the possibility of India’s
Mars mission succeeding was less than the flip of a coin. And that India managed to do it in
its first attempt really shows the hard work and confidence which the Indian space agency had
in its own program,” Victor Beattie from the command centre said.

Hi Ann,

It’s been so long since our last visit, and I thought I’d write to you to see how
everything is. So, how are you and the family doing? If I remember correctly, Lucy is
just about to start kindergarten, right? That must be exciting; she was always such a
bright girl. And what grade is Jimmy going into? 7th or 8th? He’s growing up so fast.
They both are, really.

My kids are getting ready for the school year as well. Tom just mentioned you guys the
other day while we were at the park. He remembered how Lucy was throwing the
pebbles last time and asked when he’d get to play with her again. I really hope that I can
tell him you’ll all be visiting soon. You should drive up for a weekend out with us.
There’s a new restaurant in town, and I think you’d like it; it’s very simple and cozy.

We all miss you very much, Ann, and the family is welcome to come visit any time at
all. I hope all is well with everyone. Please send hellos from all of us to your family.

People can have good jobs, money or good looks. However, if they become sick, those
things don't mean a thing. That’s why I believe our health is very important.
I think that our lifestyle plays an important role in our health. One of the things I do to
be healthy is to get enough sleep. If we don't sleep well, or enough, it hurts our body. It
is during sleep that our body restores itself. I also eat good foods. We need milk
products, meat, fruit and vegetables bread and cereals. I don't eat much fat or sugar.
Another thing that is very important is water. I drink 2 litres of water every day.
Exercise is also very good for both our body and mind. I go to the gym twice a week. I
like swimming, so I go to the swimming pool when I have the time. And when the
weather is good, I often go for a jog or a long walk, too.

India nyerte az ázsiai űrversenyt a Marsra

India sikeresen körpályára állított egy űrrepülőt a “Vörös Bolygó” körül. Az űrhajó 10
hónap alatt több száz millió kilométert tett meg a Földtől. Az űrrepülő a Mars
felszínéről fog képeket készíteni. Ezen kívül, megkísérli meghatározni a bolygó
légkörében található metán mennyiségét is.

A tudósok Bangalore-ból, az Indiai Űrkutató Szervezet irányító központjából követték


végig a repülést. Az űrhajót “Mangalyaan” –nak nevezték el, ami hindi nyelven Mars
repülőt jelent. A tudósok ujjongtak és kezet ráztak, amint az űrrepülő körpályára állt a
Mars körül. „Ha megnézzük a Mars küldetések sikerességi arányát, eddig 51 Mars
küldetés volt, és ezeknek több mint a fele kudarccal végződött. Így annak az esélye,
hogy India Mars küldetése sikerüljön kisebb volt, mintha feldobtunk volna egy érmét.
És az, hogy Indiának sikerült ezt első próbálkozásra megcsinálni valóban tükrözi a
kemény munkát, és azt a bizalmat, melyet az indiai űrügynökség táplált saját programja
iránt.” – mondta Victor Beattie az irányító központból.

Working as tour guides


Job loss and the lack of new job opportunities are devastating many baby boomers, forcing an
unprecedented number to seek early retirement. As a result, the most affluent generation in
history now has serious problems.
The Social Security Administration reports that in the past few years, early retirement
claims have soared to record levels. Baby boomers opting to retire at age 62 are settling for as
much as 25 percent less in income per month than if they waited to retire at age 66. What can
baby boomers and retirees do to supplement their incomes when traditional jobs are
unavailable?
"Consider becoming a professional tour director," says Ted Bravos, chief executive
officer of International Tour Management Institute (ITMI). "Even during these uncertain
times, travel and tour companies are seeking qualified people. Boomers possess the life
experience and maturity that makes them terrific tour directors." In the U.S. alone, the travel
industry creates over 17 million jobs.
Professional tour directors earn an average of $150 to $350 per day plus all-expense-
paid trips. And, it does not matter where the tour director lives, because many tour companies
pay for travel from their home to the tour destination and back. Tour directors can determine
how many days each year they wish to work and which areas of the country or the world they
wish to experience.
Since its inception in 1976, ITMI has launched thousands of travel careers. ITMI
alumni are sought after by major tour operators such as Adventures by Disney, Australian
Pacific Touring, Globus & Cosmos, Tauck World Discovery and Princess Cruise Lines, to
name a few.
What does a tour director do? Tour directors represent the travel organizer for whom
they work. They prepare commentaries and briefings about each area and are prepared to
answer commonly asked questions and deal with everyday problem solving. Most
importantly, good tour guides relate well to people. They set the tone and ensure that
participants enjoy themselves.
How can someone become a professional tour director? ITMI's certified program has
two parts. In the first part, students learn all aspects of tour directing in two short weeks.
Because over 60 percent of the program is conducted in the field, participants receive the
intensive real-world experience.
In the second part, individual sessions help students identify their immediate and long-

friends a helping hand. But you can do even more than that!

Many people participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). It is a four-day annual
event during which thousands of volunteers around the world record information about the
species of birds they see. The information backyard bird-watchers gather assists scientists in
better understanding the movement of species around the globe, how well different species
are - or aren't - doing and how factors like climate change are affecting bird populations.

Bird populations are so diverse, large and widespread that it would be virtually impossible for
scientists to gather all the data they need without help from backyard bird enthusiasts who
participate in the GBBC. The information individuals gather is of great importance because
fluctuations in bird populations are often the earliest signs of greater environmental changes.

Working as tour guides
Job loss and the lack of new job opportunities are devastating many baby boomers, forcing an
unprecedented number to seek early retirement. As a result, the most affluent generation in
history now has serious problems.
The Social Security Administration reports that in the past few years, early retirement
claims have soared to record levels. Baby boomers opting to retire at age 62 are settling for as
much as 25 percent less in income per month than if they waited to retire at age 66. What can
baby boomers and retirees do to supplement their incomes when traditional jobs are
unavailable?
"Consider becoming a professional tour director," says Ted Bravos, chief executive
officer of International Tour Management Institute (ITMI). "Even during these uncertain
times, travel and tour companies are seeking qualified people. Boomers possess the life
experience and maturity that makes them terrific tour directors." In the U.S. alone, the travel
industry creates over 17 million jobs.
Professional tour directors earn an average of $150 to $350 per day plus all-expense-
paid trips. And, it does not matter where the tour director lives, because many tour companies
pay for travel from their home to the tour destination and back. Tour directors can determine
how many days each year they wish to work and which areas of the country or the world they
wish to experience.
Since its inception in 1976, ITMI has launched thousands of travel careers. ITMI
alumni are sought after by major tour operators such as Adventures by Disney, Australian
Pacific Touring, Globus & Cosmos, Tauck World Discovery and Princess Cruise Lines, to
name a few.
What does a tour director do? Tour directors represent the travel organizer for whom
they work. They prepare commentaries and briefings about each area and are prepared to
answer commonly asked questions and deal with everyday problem solving. Most
importantly, good tour guides relate well to people. They set the tone and ensure that
participants enjoy themselves.
How can someone become a professional tour director? ITMI's certified program has
two parts. In the first part, students learn all aspects of tour directing in two short weeks.
Because over 60 percent of the program is conducted in the field, participants receive the
intensive real-world experience.
In the second part, individual sessions help students identify their immediate and long-
term objectives, and determine which tour operators will best meet their goals.
The instructors also help students with resume preparation and assist them in
arranging interviews with prospective employers. Many graduates secure their first

Dear Al,

I am so excited because it’s Christmas next week. I know that in your country
Christmas is not celebrated by many families, but it is the most important and most
enjoyed holiday of the year in Hungary. And it is my favourite holiday, too!
Here it is celebrated by everyone, not just by those who are religious. People view
Christmas as a time for being together with their relatives. Children, parents, and
grandparents gather to exchange presents and to eat special foods. Unlike in many
Western countries, in Hungary we give each other presents on Christmas Eve, which is
the evening of December 24th. Last year I got a new tablet computer for Christmas. I
was so happy! I don’t know what I’ll get this year. We always keep it a secret what we
will give each other.
Families also celebrate by sharing a big meal. In my family, we usually eat fish
soup, turkey or stuffed cabbage. Fortunately, I love all of them.
Another Christmas tradition is the Christmas tree. We put a small tree inside the
house and decorate it with various pretty objects. Nowadays, many people use an
artificial tree instead of a real one, but I don’t like it. We always buy a real tree.

The Bayview Restaurant is a beautiful restaurant, the service is great as is the food. But
be prepared to wait in line. We came on a Friday night and the place was full. We
waited 20 minutes for a table as it is not only a popular restaurant but also a very small
one. All the waiters are polite and extremely attentive. They really make sure you're
taken care of during your visit.
I liked the idea that they served green tea on ice instead of water, which was really
refreshing. On the menu, you can find a wide range of dishes: soups, starters, main
courses and desserts. The food we ate was very delicious, and the portions were not
small at all. We loved the desserts. My strawberry dessert was among the best I have
ever tasted.
All in all, we were really satisfied and will definitely return to this place!

megrendezett négy napos esemény, melyben világszerte több ezer önkéntes jegyez le
információkat azokról a madárfajokról, melyeket lát. Az az információ, melyet a kerti
madár megfigyelők gyűjtenek, segíti a tudósokat jobban megérteni a fajok mozgását a
Föld körül, hogy a különböző fajok mennyire jól – vagy nem jól - érzik magukat, és
hogy az olyan tényezők, mint a klímaváltozás hogyan befolyásolják a madár
populációkat.

A madár populációk annyira különbözőek, hatalmasak és szétterjedtek, hogy


gyakorlatilag lehetetlen lenne a tudósok számára, hogy összegyűjtsék az összes
szükséges adatot a GBBC-ben résztvevő lelkes madár megfigyelők segítsége nélkül. Az

Doping
A report says some Kenyan athletes are using banned drugs to win sporting events. Kenyan
runners won marathons in the American cities of Boston and Chicago. After the races,
scientists tested blood samples taken from the winners. The samples showed the presence of
an illegal substance. Officials call such substances performance-enhancing drugs, or PEDs.
Researchers say PEDs can help athletes perform at a higher level. Use of the drugs is called
“doping.”
The report was the work of an anti-doping group. The group says it found that doping was
becoming a serious issue in Kenya. Now, some Kenyan athletes are worried about the report
and news stories about the test results. They say the incident could damage the image of
Kenyans as the fastest long-distance runners in the world.
Kenya’s Rita Jeptoo has won the Chicago Marathon twice. She has also won the Boston
Marathon three times. And a Kenyan man and woman finished first in the male and female
events at the New York marathon in November.
But in late October, reports said Rita Jeptoo had tested positive for EPO. That is the same
drug that American athlete Lance Armstrong admitted he had used to help him win cycling
races. Ms. Jeptoo was the best-known Kenyan athlete to ever test positive for a banned
substance.
She denies having taken EPO. And the sport’s governing committee in Kenya says the test
results are not yet final. But the results surprised many people in Kenya’s sports community.
John Mwithiga has been training Kenyan athletes for 25 years. Some of those he has trained
hold national records. He says doping has become a problem only recently. He says that even
before the recent test results, some people had begun to believe that Kenyan runners were
using banned substances.
Those accusations hurt Mr. Mwithiga. He says the athletes he trains do not use illegal
substances. He says they work hard and have natural talent. He blames people who come
from other countries to manage Kenyan athletes for the increased use of banned drugs.
Moni Wekesa is a sports law and medicine expert at the Institute of Capacity Building in
Nairobi. He led the anti-doping group that released its report last month. The report said
Kenya has almost no controls in place to prevent doping. Mr. Wekesa said it was easy for the
athletes to get banned drugs -- including from stores in Kenya, and most athletes do not have
enough information to make the right choices.
According to Mr. Wekesa it is not fair to say that all Kenyan athletes are using banned drugs
as the use of PEDs is more common in the West. But a closer examination of the performance
of Kenyan athletes could be very good for the country.
The Associated Press news agency says the report has been given to the Kenyan government
and to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Africa office. The AP noted that some members of
the country’s rugby and soccer teams were found to be using banned substances. The report
said some soccer players were using marijuana, cocaine and steroids.
In early November, a Kenyan cabinet minister admitted the country had a doping problem.
The minister announced plans to open an anti-doping agency by the end of this year.

Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor made over sixty films during her long career in Hollywood. She was famous
for her striking beauty, violet eyes and shining black hair, but was equally known for her
complex private life and eight marriages. Beginning in the 1980s, she also raised millions of
dollars to support AIDS research.

Elizabeth Taylor played the queen of Egypt in the 1963 movie “Cleopatra” and earned over
one million dollars for her work. At the time, this was the most money ever paid to an actor
for a single film. It was also one of the most costly movies ever made. “Cleopatra” was a
larger-than-life movie for a larger-than-life actress.

Moreover, “Cleopatra” received a great deal of attention for bringing together Elizabeth
Taylor and Richard Burton. In spite of the fact that both stars were married to other people at
the time, they began a widely publicized love affair while filming the movie. Burton and
Taylor would eventually marry and divorce each other twice. They made many movies
together and led a life of extreme fame and wealth.

Taylor later said she remained madly in love with Burton for her entire life and added that she
would have married him a third time had he not died unexpectedly in 1984.

Doping
A report says some Kenyan athletes are using banned drugs to win sporting events. Kenyan
runners won marathons in the American cities of Boston and Chicago. After the races,
scientists tested blood samples taken from the winners. The samples showed the presence of
an illegal substance. Officials call such substances performance-enhancing drugs, or PEDs.
Researchers say PEDs can help athletes perform at a higher level. Use of the drugs is called
“doping.”
The report was the work of an anti-doping group. The group says it found that doping was
becoming a serious issue in Kenya. Now, some Kenyan athletes are worried about the report
and news stories about the test results. They say the incident could damage the image of
Kenyans as the fastest long-distance runners in the world.
Kenya’s Rita Jeptoo has won the Chicago Marathon twice. She has also won the Boston
Marathon three times. And a Kenyan man and woman finished first in the male and female
events at the New York marathon in November.
But in late October, reports said Rita Jeptoo had tested positive for EPO. That is the same
drug that American athlete Lance Armstrong admitted he had used to help him win cycling
races. Ms. Jeptoo was the best-known Kenyan athlete to ever test positive for a banned
substance.
She denies having taken EPO. And the sport’s governing committee in Kenya says the test
results are not yet final. But the results surprised many people in Kenya’s sports community.
John Mwithiga has been training Kenyan athletes for 25 years. Some of those he has trained
hold national records. He says doping has become a problem only recently. He says that even
before the recent test results, some people had begun to believe that Kenyan runners were
using banned substances.
Those accusations hurt Mr. Mwithiga. He says the athletes he trains do not use illegal
substances. He says they work hard and have natural talent. He blames people who come
from other countries to manage Kenyan athletes for the increased use of banned drugs.
Moni Wekesa is a sports law and medicine expert at the Institute of Capacity Building in
Nairobi. He led the anti-doping group that released its report last month. The report said
Kenya has almost no controls in place to prevent doping. Mr. Wekesa said it was easy for the
athletes to get banned drugs -- including from stores in Kenya, and most athletes do not have
enough information to make the right choices.
According to Mr. Wekesa it is not fair to say that all Kenyan athletes are using banned drugs
as the use of PEDs is more common in the West. But a closer examination of the performance
of Kenyan athletes could be very good for the country.
The Associated Press news agency says the report has been given to the Kenyan government
and to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Africa office. The AP noted that some members of
the country’s rugby and soccer teams were found to be using banned substances. The report
said some soccer players were using marijuana, cocaine and steroids.
In early November, a Kenyan cabinet minister admitted the country had a doping problem.
The minister announced plans to open an anti-doping agency by the end of this year.

Dear Pam,

This has been a different week than usual. Last Tuesday my school orchestra
travelled to the capital city, where we went to perform in a competition and we went
everywhere in the city after that. On Tuesday evening we went to the Hard Rock Cafe
and got to listen to a new rock band. It was like a two-and-a-half-hour performance, but
they were unbelievable! It was great!
The next day we attended the actual competition and were ranked number two, so
we were very happy, of course. And after that we went to an amusement park for about
nine hours and rode just about every ride there. On Thursday morning we visited the
zoo and saw all sorts of animals from all over the world. It was very interesting.
On Thursday evening we got back on the bus and rode four hours all the way
home. The bus ride was so long because of the heavy traffic, so it felt good to be back in
my little old hometown.
I like to go on short trips like this because they are so much fun. We can do and
see a lot of exciting things. Plus, on Friday we didn’t have to go to school because we
arrived home quite late on Thursday evening!

very satisfying to find the missing parts of their collection, especially when the stamps

Elizabeth Taylor játszotta Egyiptom királynőjét az 1963-as Kleopátra című filmben, és


több mint egymillió dollárt keresett a munkájával. Akkoriban ez volt a legtöbb pénz,
amit valaha kifizettek egy színésznek egyetlen filmért. Ez volt az egyik legköltségesebb

The service offers a few tips on how to avoid and manage stress:

* While change can be good for you, it’s a good idea to plan ahead for major life changes.
* Know your own limitations for how much you can juggle at once and don’t be afraid to say
no to new responsibilities when you already have enough on your plate.
* Communicate and talk with others about your feelings of stress.

Why Exercise Is Important

Health experts have long noted the importance of physical activity. Exercise not only
improves your appearance, it can also make you healthier. Exercise helps to reduce the risk of
some diseases including heart disease, stroke, type-two diabetes, osteoporosis and even some
kinds of cancer.

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in several countries. High blood pressure
and high cholesterol levels in blood can increase your risk of heart disease. Medical experts

Physical activity is also known to increase the release of endorphins. These chemicals reduce
feelings of pain as well as help people feel happier and more peaceful.

Dear Sam,

How are you? I hope you’re doing well. It's been a while since I've heard from
you. I am writing this letter to let you know that I have changed my job.
Do you remember when you were here on holiday, I always talked about how I
hated my office job? I was really fed up with sitting in an office and writing boring
financial reports all day. It was clear I needed a change. So, finally, I decided to quit
that job. I took a part-time course and trained to be a tour guide. Now I'm working full-
time for a travel agency which organizes sightseeing tours in Budapest. I’m enjoying
this job a lot, so I think it was a very good decision to change my career. I love meeting
people who come from all over the world and showing them this beautiful city.
However, I have to admit that the work presents some challenges as well. I would
say that for me, the most difficult aspect of the job is dealing with complaints. You
know, there are some tourists who are never satisfied with anything and complain about
everything. Fortunately, it rarely happens and most of the tourists I meet are very nice
and friendly people.
So, how about you? I hope you'll have a chance to visit Hungary again soon. In
the meantime, please write and let me know what's new with you.

I agree with this statement. These days it is quite hard to find a family that does not
have a TV set. And the television plays an important role in the everyday life of many
families. Many people spend much more time in front of the television than they spend
together with other family members.
Some parents even use the TV as a babysitter. When they come home from work and
feel very tired, they simply turn on the television and everything is done. This way they
don’t have to play with their children or have long conversations with their spouse after
a hard working day,- the kids are quiet and the parents are happy. It is so simple that it
has become an integral part of family life.
However, I don’t think it’s a good thing. In my opinion, family members should spend
more time communicating with each other instead of watching another episode of their
favourite TV series.

Airline helps children

Cebu Pacific (CEB), noted for its various breakthroughs in the local airline industry like fun
games on board (fun flights) and on-time flight (sometimes even ahead of time), has again
engaged in charity work, sharing its blessings and accomplishments gained throughout the
year.
Every Christmas, CEB employees bring joy to the children of NK in Welfareville,
Mandaluyong City. NK is a national centre for youth with special needs. It currently serves as
home to 234 children aged 7 to 17 years old, who are abandoned, orphaned, or maltreated.
Small cottages around the compound, neat and well-maintained by the children
themselves, are their temporary haven. "We look at what the children need and we try to
provide them with whatever we can manage to give through the help of the people and
organizations," said Charito Paraan, directress of NK.
Aside from shelter and basic needs, the center also provides legal and educational
assistance of the children as well as helps them develop their talents and skills.
"The relationship between CEB and NK, which began in 1999, stemmed from the
collective efforts of CEB executives. These were focused towards the basic needs of children
and what the airline can do to help provide these essentials," said Bong Mojica, CEB general
manager.
The endeavour commenced in 1999 when the company facilitated the installation of a
communication system that made inter-cottage communication inside the compound possible.
Television sets to replace the old inoperative units in the various cottages were
donated the following year, along with medicines. On their third year, a lawn mower, stainless
steel eating utensils and medicines were the company’s gifts to the kids.
It was in 2002 when NK transferred to their current location in Welfareville,
Mandaluyong City after about 32 years in Pasay City, prompting CEB to donate their floor
polishers to help clean and prepare the cottages. Last year CEB donated R50,000 worth of
PTB (Pulmonary Tuberculosis) drugs to the kids. It was also the year when the company
helped fly three brothers to Davao to be reunited with their relatives after three years of
staying here in Manila for treatment for hemophilia.
Christmas is extra special for CEB and the kids. To show their appreciation for these
blessings, every year the kids prepare an exclusive Christmas program especially for CEB.
In turn, CEB collects loads of toys and other items all wrapped up for the holidays
from volunteer employees and executives.
"Support for institutions that protect the welfare of children, like NK will continue to
be a core component of CEB’s commitment to the nation and society," Mojica said.

Recycling

Outdoor fun in the form of barbecues, concerts and running events is a great way to enjoy the
summer. However, these activities can also generate a substantial amount of trash. Bottles,
cans and other materials from public events are often thrown away, but they present a great
opportunity to help the community and the environment through recycling.

Americans are accustomed to recycling at home and in the workplace. Last year Americans
recycled 85 million of the 254 million tons of garbage generated. More than 37 percent of
plastic soft drink bottles and 49 percent of all aluminum beverage cans are recycled each year.
Still, recyclable materials used at outdoor events -- such as glass and plastic bottles or paper
cups -- often end up in the trash.

Recycling and waste reduction conserve natural resources, yield energy savings and reduce
greenhouse gas emissions. Manufacturing goods from recycled materials typically requires
less energy than producing an item from virgin material, thus reducing the amount of
greenhouse gases that are produced. The energy savings from recycling can be substantial:
The 85 million tons that Americans recycled saved enough energy to power more than 7
million U.S. homes for a year.

Dear Julie,

Many thanks for your letter. It was great to hear from you. You asked me to tell you all
about my news, so here goes.
The big news is that I have finally moved to New York. Do you remember that in
my last letter I told you of my plan to move to the USA? A friend of mine got me a job
here as a waitress in her father’s restaurant. It’s not the most exciting job in the world, I
know, but at least this way I had the opportunity to come and live here.
This change of lifestyle is huge! Firstly, all the buildings here are very tall and the
sun is almost hidden and you know how much I love sunshine! Secondly, at night, the
city gets very noisy and it's hard for me to sleep but I guess I'll get used to it.
I only work in the evenings and I have plenty of time in the morning, so I decided
to attend a language school to improve my English. The course started last Monday. I
don't know anyone at the school and, at the moment, I'm alone at breaks, but I don't
worry too much about it! I'm sure I'll make new friends soon.
Despite all the difficulties I'm now facing, there are lots of interesting things to do
here. New York City is so exciting!

Kings Park is an absolute must visit while you are in the city. The views over the city
are spectacular. There is a great photo opportunity, so make sure you bring a camera!
There are some really great walks to take and you can spend hours exploring the park. It
is a perfect place for families with young children, too. There are a lot of playgrounds.
You can take guided tours of the park, which provide more information about the
plants. These tours are available three times a day, and they are completely free. We
went for a guided walk in the afternoon. It was very interesting. The guide was very
well prepared and enthusiastic.
If you have the time, I would also recommend visiting the park again at night because
the views of the city skyline in the sunset and dark are fantastic.

A szórakozás a szabadban – kerti sütögetések, koncertek és futóversenyek formájában –


remek módja annak, hogy élvezzük a nyarat. Azonban ezek a tevékenységek hatalmas
mennyiségű szemetet is termelhetnek. A nyilvános eseményekről származó palackokat,
fémdobozokat, és egyéb anyagokat gyakran a szemétbe dobják, pedig ezek nagyszerű
lehetőséget kínálnak arra, hogy az újrahasznosításon keresztül a közösség és a
környezet javára váljanak.

Az amerikaiak hozzá vannak szokva az újrahasznosításhoz az otthonaikban és a


munkahelyeken. Tavaly a keletkezett 254 millió tonna szemétből az amerikaiak 85
milliót újrahasznosítottak. Minden évben az üdítőitalos műanyagpalackok több mint
37%-át, az alumínium italos- dobozok 49%-át hasznosítják újra. Azonban a szabadtéri
eseményeken elhasznált újrahasznosítható anyagok – mint például az üveg és műanyag
palackok vagy papírpoharak – gyakran a szemétben végzik.

A szemét csökkentése és az újrahasznosítás megóvják a természeti erőforrásokat,


lehetővé teszik az energia megtakarítást, és csökkentik az üvegházhatású gázok
kibocsátását. Az újrahasznosított anyagokból történő termék előállítás jellemzően
kevesebb energiát igényel, mint a szűz alapanyagokból történő gyártás, így kevesebb
