SECTION 05 12 14 – ARCHITECTURALLY EXPOSED STRUCTURAL STEEL -

SUPERSTRUCTURE PACKAGE

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section includes requirements for the fabrication, erection appearance and surface preparation
of Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel (AESS).

B. This Section applies to members noted on Architectural and Structural drawings as AESS and
in the areas defined as AESS below.

C. The LEED requirements specified in Section 05 10 00 apply to this Section.

1.3 ADMINISTRATIVE REQUIREMENTS

A. Coordination:

1. Coordinate installation of anchors for AESS members relating to other work. Supply
setting drawings, templates and directions for installing anchors, including sleeves,
concrete inserts, anchor bolts and items with integral anchors to be embedded in concrete
or masonry.
2. Field Measurements: Where AESS is indicated to fit against walls and other construction,
verify dimensions by field measurements before fabrication and indicate measurements
on Shop Drawings.

B. Preinstallation Meetings:

1. General: Comply with Section 01 12 00 and Section 01 14 00, except as specified below.
Where the provisions are in conflict, the more restrictive requirements apply.

2. Coordinate requirements for attachment of safety cables and temporary erection bracing,
touchup painting and other requirements relating to work of this Section.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. General: Comply with Article 3.12 of the General Conditions, and Sections 01 13 00 and 05
10 00, except as specified below. Where the provisions are in conflict, the more restrictive
requirements apply. Do not submit items not requested.

B. 1 . . . Product Data: Submit manufacturer Product Data for primer as well as surface
preparation of steel members. Coordinate submittal with Section 09 97 156. . . . 1

C. Shop Drawings:

1. Submit Shop Drawings detailing fabrication of AESS components.


2. Provide erection drawings indicating which members are AESS members.
3. Include details identifying performance requirements listed in this Section. Provide
connections for exposed AESS consistent with concepts shown on Architectural or
Structural Drawings.
4. Indicate welds by standard AWS symbols, distinguishing between shop and field welds,
showing size, length and type of each weld. Identify grinding, finish and profile of welds
as defined herein.
5. Indicate type, size, finish and length of bolts, distinguishing between shop and field bolts.
Identify high-strength bolted slip-critical, direct-tensioned shear/bearing connections and
indicate orientation of bolt heads.
6. Clearly indicate which surfaces or edges are exposed and what class of surface
preparation is being used.
7. Indicate special tolerances and erection requirements as noted on Drawings or specified
herein.
8. Indicate anchorage concepts on Shop Drawings.

D. Samples: Submit the following Samples in size indicated.

1. Steel Sections:

a. One unpainted Sample after surface preparation; minimum 12 inches long.


b. One primed Sample; minimum 12 inches long.

2. 1 . . . Source Quality Control: Submit components and procedures of AESS paint system
as a single coordinated submittal. As a minimum, identify required surface preparation,
primer, intermediate coat (if applicable) and finish coat. Coordinate submittals with
Section 09 97 156. . . . 1

E. Qualification data for firms and persons specified in “Quality Control” below to demonstrate
their capabilities and experience. Include lists of completed projects names and address,
names and addresses of architects and owners, and other information specified. For each
project, submit photographs showing detail of installed AESS.

F. Contractor’s Quality Control Plan: Submit the Contractor’s Quality Control Plan for review
by the TJPA’s Testing Agency.

G. Qualifications of Contractor’s Quality Control Inspector’s: Along with Quality Control Plan,
Contractor shall submit written qualifications for all inspectors to be assigned Quality Control
functions for the work of this Section, including general inspection, bolting inspection,
welding inspection, and non-destructive testing. Qualifications for welding inspectors shall
show evidence of ability to monitor all WPS variables, check weld sizes, and visually detect
weld defects.

1.5 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS

A. LEED™ Submittals:

1. Credit MR4: Product data indicating percentage by weight of post-consumer and post-
industrial recycled content for products having recycled content. Include a statement
indicating projected costs for each product having recycled content.
2. Credit IEQ 4.2: If field-applied, provide manufacturer’s MSDS or technical data sheet
showing a printed statement of VOC content for all paints and coatings used on the
Project and demonstrating compliance with Green Seal standard GS-11, Paints, May 20,
1993; with Green Seal GC-03, Anti-Corrosive Paints, January 7, 1997; with SCAQMD
Rule #1113, effective January 1, 2004.

1.6 QUALITY CONTROL

A. Regulatory Requirements: In addition to LEED requirements comply with BAAQMD


requirements referenced in Section 01 14 10.

B. Standards: Comply with provisions of the following, except where more stringent
requirements are shown or specified:

1. CBC 2007 with City of San Francisco Amendments.


2. AISC Code of Standard Practice.
3. AWS D1.1.

C. Contractor’s Quality Control Plan:

1. Quality Control includes the functions performed by the Contractor to ensure that the
material and workmanship of the work of this Section meets the requirements of the
Specifications and applicable standards.
2. The Contractor shall submit a Quality Control Plan that addresses all inspection issues,
including fabrication/erection testing and inspection per AWS D1.1.
3. The verification testing and inspection carried out by the TJPA’s Testing Agency shall
not relieve the Contractor of the responsibility for conducting its own quality
Control/inspection program to ensure compliance that the Contract Documents have been
met.

D. The Contractor’s Quality Control Plan will be reviewed by the TJPA’s Testing Agency.

E. Qualification of Welders:

1. The TJPA Representative may, at his or her sole discretion, require welders whose work
fails to pass inspection to be re-qualified before performing further welding.
2. The Contractor shall pay costs associated with welders’ qualifications

F. Qualifications of Contractor’s Quality Control Inspector’s: Along with Quality Control Plan,
Contractor shall submit written qualifications for all inspectors to be assigned Quality Control
functions for AESS, including general inspection, bolting inspection, welding inspection, and
non-destructive testing. Qualifications for welding inspectors shall show evidence of ability to
monitor all WPS variables, check weld sizes, and visually detect weld defects.

G. Qualifications:

1. Fabricator: Engage a firm experienced in fabricating AESS similar to that indicated for
this Project with a record of successful in-service performance, as well as sufficient
production capacity to fabricate AESS without delaying the Work.

2. Installers: Experienced erector with minimum 5 years experience having completed
AESS work similar in material, design and extent to that indicted for this Project and with
a record of successful in-service performance.
3. Welding: Quality procedures and personnel according to ANSI/AWS D1.1/D1.1M and
ANSI/AWS D1.3/D1.3M. Certify each welder has satisfactorily passed AWS
qualification test for welding processes involved and if pertinent, has undergone
recertification.

H. Mockups: Prior to fabricating AESS, construct mockups to demonstrate aesthetic effects as


well as qualities of materials and execution.

1. Construct full size mockups with joints representative of round or rectangular HSS truss
frames. HSS members shall extend at least 6" from joints in mockups
2. Ensure mockups demonstrate weld quality and contouring of welds at aligned walls.
3. Build mockups to comply with requirements specified herein, using methods, materials
and finishes indicated for final unit of Work.
4. Once accepted, mockup may remain part of finished work and used as a quality reference
standard for remainder of AESS.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Delivery and Acceptance:

1. Deliver AESS to Project site in such quantities and at such times to ensure continuity of
installation.
2. Check AESS members upon delivery for twist, kinks, gouges or other imperfections
which may result in rejection of the appearance of members.
3. Web, stem, flange or leg distortions of rolled members are considered acceptable to TJPA
Representative if not visible from a distance of 4 feet under any lighting condition
determined by TJPA Representative.

B. Storage and Handling:

1. Use special care in handling and shipping of AESS both before and after shop priming.
2. Ensure rolled members are tied prior to shipping to prevent stress relieving.
3. Store materials to permit easy access for inspection and identification. Keep steel
members off ground by using pallets, platforms, or other supports. Protect steel members
and packaged materials from erosion and deterioration. Use special care in handling to
prevent twisting or warping of AESS members.
4. Erect primed pieces so they are not damaged. Provide padding as required to protect
members while rigging and aligning member’s frames. Weld tabs for temporary bracing
and safety cabling only at points concealed from view in completed structure or where
approved by TJPA Representative during preinstallation meeting. Ensure methods of
removing temporary erection devices and finishing AESS members are approved by
TJPA Representative prior to erection.
5. Touchup damaged primer immediately upon discovery of damage.

1.8 WARRANTY

A. The warranty is governed by the requirements herein, those of Section 01 74 00, and the
General Conditions of the Contract.

B. Warranty specified in this Article shall not deprive the TJPA of other rights the TJPA may
have under other provisions of the Contract Documents and are in addition to and run
concurrent with other warranties made by the Contractor under requirements of the Contract
Documents.

C. Provide primer manufacturer’s warranty against defects in materials. Defects include but are
not limited to lack of adhesion, pin rust, loss of mil thickness beyond manufacturer’s
published data, and deterioration of primer beyond normal weathering.

D. Length of warranty is 5 years.

1.9 RECORD DOCUMENTS (AS-BUILT)

A. General: The provisions of Article 3.09 of the General Conditions and Sections 01 17 20
apply to this Section.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS

A. As indicated.

2.2 LEED REQUIREMENTS

A. Credit MR4: Provide steel materials with minimum 50 percent recycled content where the
total recycled content equals the sum of post-consumer recycled content and ½ post-industrial
recycled content.

B. Credit IEQ 4.2: All VOC containing materials applied on site inside of the waterproofing
barrier shall comply with LEED credits IEQ4. Provide paints and coatings that comply with
the limits defined by Green Seal Standard GS-11, effective May 20, 1993, GC-03, January 7,
1997, and SCAQMD Rule #1113, effective January 1, 2004, as applicable.

2.3 FABRICATION

A. Fabricate and assemble AESS in shop to greatest extent possible. Locate field joints in AESS
assemblies at concealed locations or as approved by TJPA Representative. Detail AESS
assemblies to minimize field handling and expedite erection.

B. Fabricate AESS with exposed surfaces smooth, square and of surface quality consistent with
reviewed mock-up. Ensure AESS is free of surface blemishes including pitting, rust and scale
seam marks, roller marks, rolled trade names and roughness. Use special care in handling and
shipping of AESS.

C. Coordinate the following with Article 3.7 below. In addition to special care used to handle
and fabricate AESS, employ following fabrication techniques:

1. Fabrication Tolerances: As specified in Article 3.7 below.


2. Welds: Grind welds of AESS smooth. For groove welds, make weld flush to surfaces
each side and be within +1/16-inch - 0-inch of plate thickness.
3. Contouring and Blending of Welds: Where fillet welds are indicated to be ground
contoured, or blended, oversize welds as required and grind to a provide smooth
transition and match profile on reviewed mockup.
4. Continuous Welds: Provide continuous welds of uniform size and profile in areas noted
on Drawings.
5. Minimize Weld Show Through: At locations where welding on the far side of an exposed
connection occurs, grind distortion and marking of steel to a smooth profile with adjacent
material.
6. Coping and Blocking Tolerance: Maintain uniform gap of 1/8-inch +/-1/32-inch at copes
and blocks.
7. Joint Gap Tolerance: Maintain uniform gap of 1/8-inch +/-1/32-inch unless otherwise
noted on Drawings.

8. Piece Marks Hidden: Fabricate AESS such that piece marks are fully hidden in final
structure or made with such media to permit full removal after erection.
9. Surface Defects Minimized: Minimize surface defects to greatest extent possible and as
specified in AISC 303.
10. Mill Mark Removal: Deliver steel with no mill marks (stenciled, stamped, raised etc) in
exposed locations. Omit mill marks by cutting mill material to appropriate lengths where
possible. Where not possible, fabricator may fill and/or grind to a surface finish
consistent with reviewed mock-up.
11. Grinding of Sheared Edges: Grind edges of sheared, punched or flame cut steel to match
reviewed mock-up.
12. Rolled Members: Fully shape rolled members in shop to final curved shape.
13. Seal Welds: Seal weld open ends of round and rectangular hollow structural section with
3/8-inch closure plates. Provide continuous, sealed welds at angle to gusset plate
connections and similar locations where AESS is exposed to weather.

D. Shop Connections:

1. Fabricate AESS so connections of assemblies made in the field are either bolted or weld
connections.
2. Welded Connections: Comply with ANSI/AWS D1.1/D1.1M. Ensure appearance and
quality of welds are consistent with reviewed mockups.
3. Bolted Connections: Provide bolted connections in accordance with requirements of this
Section, as well as individual stipulations of systems requiring AESS. Provide bolt type
and finish as noted herein and orient bolt heads as indicated on reviewed Shop Drawings.

E. Shop Welding:

1. Execute welding to avoid damage or distortion to the Work. Should there be, in the
opinion of TJPA Representative, doubt as to adequacy of welds, test designated welds for
efficiency and remove and replace any work not meeting Standards with new work
satisfactory to TJPA Representative. Carry out welding in accordance with AWS.
2. Thoroughly clean welded joints and steel exposed for a sufficient space to properly
perform welding operation. Neatly finish welds. Ensure welds exposed to view and finish
painted are continuous and ground smooth.

F. Finishes:

1. 1 . . . Galvanizing: Galvanize members so indicated as specified in Section 05 05 165.


2. Shop priming: Coordinate required blast profile with reviewed paint submittal prior to
beginning surface preparation. Clean and prepare surfaces, and prime all AESS as
specified in Section 05 10 00 and 09 97 16, except following:

a. Surfaces embedded in concrete or mortar. Extend priming of partially embedded


members to a depth of 2 inches. For cleaning, surface preparation and priming
systems see Section 05 10 00
b. DELETED Surfaces to be field welded.
c. DELETED Surfaces to be high-strength bolted with slip-critical connections, if
primer does not meet specified CISC slip coefficient.

3. DELETED Stripe paint corners, crevices, bolts, welds and sharp edges.
4. DELETED Fireproofing: Note that some structural steel members will receive
intumescent fireproofing. Prepare steel surfaces to accept fireproofing . . . 1

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verification of Conditions: Verify actual site dimensions and location of adjacent and location
of adjacent materials prior to commencing work. Notify the CM/GC, with copy to the TJPA
Representative, in writing of conditions detrimental to the installation.

B. Evaluation and Assessment: Commencement of work implies acceptance of previously


completed work.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Provide connections for temporary shoring, bracing and supports only where noted on
reviewed Shop Drawings. Make temporary connections not indicated at locations not exposed
to view in final structure or as approved by TJPA Representative.

3.3 ERECTION

A. Handle, lift and align pieces using padded slings and/or other protection required to maintain
consistent appearance of AESS through erection process.

B. Set AESS accurately in locations and to elevations indicated according to requirement of


AISC standards and as specified herein.

C. Special Techniques:

1. Bolt Head Orientation: Orient bolt heads as indicated so that they are in the same
direction in the same room or space, unless otherwise accepted on erection drawings.
2. Removal of Field Connection Aids from Structure: Remove run-out tabs, erection bolts
and other steel members added to connections to allow for alignment, fit-up and welding
in the field. Use field groove welds to eliminate need for backing bars or permit removal
after welding. Remove welds at run-out tabs to match adjacent surfaces and grind
smooth. Fill holes with plug welds and grind smooth.
3. Filling of Weld Access Holes: Fill holes where they must be cut in web at intersection
with flanges on W shapes and structural tees to permit field welding of flanges. Execute
filling to minimize restraint and address thermal stresses in group 4 and 5 shapes.

D. Field Welding: Ensure weld profile, quality and finish is consistent with reviewed mockups.

E. Align and adjust various members forming part structure prior to permanent fastening. Before
assembly, clean bearing surfaces and other surfaces that will be in permanent contact. Perform
necessary adjustments to compensate for discrepancies in elevations and alignment.

F. Splice members only where indicated.

G. Obtain permission from TJPA Representative for torch cutting or field fabrication. Ensure
sections that are cut during erection are finished to surface appearance consistent with
reviewed mockup.

H. Do not enlarge unfair holes in members by burning or by using drift pins. Ream holes that
must be enlarged to admit bolts. Replace connection plates that are misaligned where holes
cannot be aligned with acceptable final appearance.

I. 1 . . . Shop Priming for steel receiving high performance coatings:

1. Surface preparation: SSPC-SP6 Commercial Blast Cleaning with a minimum


angular anchor profile of 1.5 mils.

J. Bolted Connections: Install bolts of specified type and finish in accordance with the reference
standards.

K. Welded Connections:

1. Comply with these Specifications and AWS for procedures and appearance. Match
appearance of approved mockup.
2. Assemble and weld built-up sections by methods that will maintain true alignment of
axes without warp. Ensure weld sizes, fabrication sequence and equipment used for
AESS limit distortions to allowable tolerances.
3. . . . 1 Obtain TJPA Representative’s approval for appearance of welds in repaired or
field-modified work.

3.4 SITE QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. The TJPA will employ a Testing Agency to supply verification inspection and testing as
defined by AWS and these Specifications on the shop fabrication and field erection of AESS.

1. Testing Agency will conduct inspections and tests required by these Specifications and
interpret results of tests. Testing Agency shall summarize their finding in inspection and
testing reports. Reports shall identify findings that are not in compliance with
requirements of the Specifications.
2. Contractor shall provide access for Testing Agency to places where AESS is being
fabricated or produced so that inspection and testing can be accomplished.
3. Testing Agency will inspect AESS at plant before shipment; however, TJPA
Representative reserves right, at any time before final acceptance, to reject material not
complying with requirements.
4. Contractor shall correct deficiencies in structural steel work that inspections and
laboratory test reports have indicated to be not in compliance with requirements. Any
tests that may be necessary to reconfirm noncompliance of original work, and as may be
necessary to show compliance of corrected work, shall be at Contractor's expense.
5. The verification testing and inspection conducted by the TJPA Testing Agency does not
relieve the Contractor of the responsibility for conducting its own quality Control
/inspection program to ensure the requirements of the construction documents have been
met.
6. Testing Agency will review the following Contractor Submittals:

a. Review Contractor’s WPSs and WPQRs for compliance with the Specifications.
b. Review Manufacturer’s Test Reports and Certifications for compliance with the
Specifications.
c. Verify that welders are qualified in accordance with the Specifications.
d. Review Contractor’s Quality Control Plan and qualifications of Contractor’s Quality
Control inspectors.

B. Visual Inspection of Welding: Testing Agency will visually inspect all shop and field welding
of structural steel accordance with the governing building code and AWS D1.1. Visual
inspection of welds will include but not be limited to the following.

1. Verify Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) sheet has been provided and has been
reviewed with each welder making the weld.
2. Verify fit-up meets tolerances of WPS and mark joint prior to welding.
3. Verify that the welding consumables comply with the Contract Documents and the WPS.
4. Verify welder qualification and identification.
5. Verify amperage and voltage at the arc with hand-held meters.
6. Observe preheat and interpass temperatures, weld pass sequence and size of weld bead.
7. Multi-pass shop and field welds shall be continuously inspected.

8. Visually inspect areas where backing bars and welds tabs are removed for conformance
with the surface roughness criteria of the Specifications.

C. Nondestructive Testing Requirements: Testing Agency will perform non-destructive testing of


shop and field welding in accordance with the Specifications, governing building code, and
AWS D1.1. Extent of non-destructive testing shall be as follows.

1. Complete Joint Penetration (CJP) welds: UT 100% CJP welds greater than 5/16-inch.

D. Non-Conforming Work: Acceptability of erected AESS steel in place will be reviewed by the
TJPA Representative and will be based on accepted mockup. Replace damaged work which
cannot be satisfactorily repaired, restored or cleaned to satisfaction of the TJPA
Representative at no cost to TJPA.

3.5 TOUCHING UP AND REPAIRING

A. 1 . . . Touchup Painting: Clean and conduct touchup painting of field welds, bolted
connections and abraded areas of shop paint to blend with adjacent surfaces of AESS in
accordance with Section 09 97 15 and the following. Refer to Section 05 10 00.

B. Touchup and Repair: For damaged and field-welded metal coated surfaces, clean welds,
bolted connections and abraded areas. Refer to Section 05 10 00.

1. DELETED For Factory-Applied Finish Coatings:

a. DELETED Applicator shall be responsible for field touchup for up to one percent of
the surface area at no additional expense to the TJPA.
b. DELETED Provide touchup so repair is invisible, under normal lighting conditions,
from a distance of 2 feet.
c. DELETED Touchup damage to zinc coating in the field with zinc cold galvanizing

3.6 PROTECTING

A. Protect in-place AESS against damage and stains during construction.

3.7 AESS FINISH SCHEDULE

A. Category 1: AESS of high profile conditions and within reach (touch) and viewed in close
proximity.

1. Fabrication Processes: Employ following fabrication techniques specified herein for


AESS members designated in this category.

a. Tolerances: One-Half Standard.


b. Welds Ground Smooth.
c. Welds Contoured & Blended.
d. Continuous Welds.
e. Weld Show Through: Minimized.
