Introduction

Philippine is one of the countries with most numbers of Overseas Filipino Workers

(OFW) across the Globe with estimated total of 2. 3 million (Results from the 2017 Survey On

Overseas Filipinos). An OFW who is living and working in other country, typically on

temporary basis and count as “National Heroes” in the Philippines. They do not only provide a

living for their families back home, but also make a considerable contribution to the countries

gross domestic product and it’s economic growth. Filipinos view overseas work as the only

alternative to esacape from debt and hopelessness. Ofw’s will travel to foreign nations, legal or

not, to escape the dark cloud of poverty and they often do without considering the possibility of

suffering in humane abuse from foreign nationals or worse, jail.

Both parents, and the father or the mother work there to produce high income and

sustain the needs of their children especially in terms of their education. One of the vitals roles a

parent must consider is to be serious nowadays in facing millennial learners. Due also to the fact

that it is not easy to send their children to formal education; it is also difficult to watch them over

and give them proper reinforcement because of the miles of distance between them. They live the

household and sacrifice their time with their children out of love. While this parent find it

difficult to separate from their children, they make the sacrifice in order to “provide for the

child’s materials requirements”. Therefore, it is important to note, that Philippine households

view overseas work as a method of attaining economic goals because of the money transfer that

the left-behind family recievers. Many parents working abroad assume that their sons and/or

daughters fully understand why they have to leave; that their departure is for the children’s

benefit as well as their future. Having said this, it is worthy to note that when parents leave
young children, the children more often than not, have no clue where there mother or father are

working or even what work they are.

However, parents primarily should be the source of good values, the first teacher, the

provider and the motivator of their children to achieve their goals in life. The irresponsibility to

their children cannot be paid with any material things. It is not enough that oparents excelled

only as good provider and yet they lack of proper guidance and counseling to their children. The

usual happenings are that there will be rebellion on the part of their children, feeling of

discomfort, loneliness, and abandontment that may result from various unnecessary conferences

such as going into drugs, alcoholism, cutting classes and exploitation of their own proerties.

These facts bof life are inevatable because the emotion being felt by the children toward their

parents working abroad unpredictable and not constantly changing, the same as their values in

life. Thus, this study aims to answer the following question 1) what are the profile of the

respondends? 2) What are the perceive effects if overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) parent on

student along: a) social aspect b) economic aspect c) values aspect d) educational aspects.
