Informed or Transformed?
Sometimes I feel like Nicodemus, the powerful and influential Jewish leader
who secretly came to see Jesus at night. I don't feel like this man because I'm
powerful or influential—I'm neither of these! But, like Nicodemus, I do often
look for the least conspicuous and easiest way to follow Jesus. And like this sin-
cere yet misguided man, I also often fall into the trap of approaching Jesus and
the Bible so that I can merely gain more knowledge, give a better sermon, or
write a more convincing book. I recently read this very challenging statement
from the book The Desire of Ages: "It is not theoretical knowledge you need so
much as spiritual regeneration. You need not to have your curiosity satisfied, but
to have a new heart" (p. 171). Wow! Talk about a wake up call. This caused me to
ask myself: Am I seeking God for information, or for transformation?
Whether you have been a Christian your entire life, or just recently gave your
life to Christ, one need stands out above all else, and that is the need to be trans-
formed into the image and character of God. This is why Jesus told Nicodemus,
"You must be born again" (John 3:7). Nicodemus' name literally means "victori-
ous among his people," and Jesus was revealing to him the path to true spiritual
victory. Another statement in The Desire of Ages puts it this way: "No human
invention can find a remedy for the sinning soul…There is no safety for one
who has merely a legal religion, a form of godliness. The Christian's life is not a
modification or improvement of the old, but a transformation of nature. There
is a death to self and sin, and a new life altogether. This change can be brought
about only by the effectual working of the Holy Spirit" (p. 172).
In this issue of PATHWAYS we will take a close look at the new birth experi-
ence, and discover its connection with the sanctuary's three curtains and the
Most Holy Place. But don't let this be simply information. Let God use these
powerful truths to transform you!

Flax Date Bars
Prep: 10 mins | Yield: 16 squares
This yummy "energy" bar is loaded with omega-3's
for a healthy body and a healthy mind.

Ingredients
1 1/4 cup unsweetened, shredded coconut
1/3 cup flax meal (finely ground flax seed - see note)
1 cup raw almonds
1/8 teaspoon salt, scant
3 1/4 cup pitted dates (see note)
1/4 teaspoon almond flavoring, scant
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, scant
1 1/3 cup Maple Nut Granola
Instructions
1. Place coconut, flax, almonds, and salt in food processor and process until
finely chopped. (This takes about 30 seconds in my food processor.)
2. Add dates, and almond and vanilla flavor, and process until dates are
finely chopped. Mixture will begin to stick together. (This takes about 30
seconds in my food processor.).
3. Add granola, and process until all ingredients are well mixed and granola
is chopped. (This takes about 1 minute in my food processor.).
4. Press mixture into an 8-inch x 8-inch pan. Cut into squares.
Notes
1. The exact amount of dates needed depends on the type of dates you use.
After step 2, test mixture. It should stick together when squeezed in between
fingers.
2. Be sure ingredients are finely chopped in step one or the bars will not stick
together.
3. This recipe requires a large (12- to 14-cup) food processor. If your food
processor is smaller, divide recipe in half and press into a loaf pan instead of
an 8-inch pan.
