COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA THE JOHN A. WILSON BUILDING 1350 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE, NW WASHINGTON, D.C. 20004 David Grosso Committee Member Councilmember At-Large Government Operations Chairperson, Committee on Education Health Human Services Labor and Workforce Development March 7, 2029 Jeffrey Marootian, Director District Department of Transportation 55M Street SE, Suite 400 Washington, DC 20003 Director Marootian, 11am very disappointed with the lack of progress on design and construction of protected bike lanes on 6 and/or 9" Streets NW from Florida Avenue to Pennsylvania Avenue. These lanes will ill major gap in our bicycle network, and moving quickly is extremely important for several reasons: The MLK library is reopening in 2020 on 9" Street NW; DDOT is planning to remove the bus/bike lanes on 7” Street NW adjacent to Capitol One Arena; More residents and visitors continue to arrive to Mt Vernon Square as new buildings open; and Protected bike lanes are planned for K Street NE/NW, and should be designed to tie in to the new North-South routes with protected intersection treatments. ‘At the recent DDOT performance oversight hearing, you stated that this was a “complicated” project because it doesn’t have full community support. As you know, itis rare that any project in a large city can ever have “full” support of the community, and it s ridiculous to wait for this to spontaneously occur as there have been no community meetings or updates in the past couple years. (On October 23, 2027, I wrote you to “urge DDOT to move forward quickly to construct both of these facilities." | stand behind this request. In fact, if you cannot decide between which option to take, then it seems even more reasonable to install this essential safety and mobility improvement on both. Please provide a response by Friday, March 22", including an updated project schedule. For any ‘questions, please contact my Chief of Staff, Tony Goodman at 202-724-8105 or Sincerely, ye David Grosso Council of the District of Columbia Chairperson, Committee on Education ce: Councilmember Mary Cheh, Chair of the Committee on Transportation and the Environment Councilmember Charles Allen, Ward 6 Councilmember Jack Evans, Ward 2
