What is Assistive Technology (AT)?
What is Assistive
Technology (AT)?

AT is any form of technology (high or low) that aids individuals with disabilities in mobility, daily tasks, personal care and safety, communication, job duties, medical treatment, exercise, recreational activities, and creative expression. With possibilities afforded via AT, developers continue to create apps and devices with the disability community in mind.

A leading Deaf

lack access to assistive technology (AT) and basic Internet access. He called for more support in bringing AT and Internet access to persons with disabilities (PWDs) in underserved areas. Send your comments, questions, and recommendations about this with the hashtag #ATAccess + #JoinTheConversation on Twitter to @abilityanyware. We would like to discuss an action plan with tangible solutions, including funding and partnerships to address this unmet and important need.

The Assistive Technology Act of 2004 established a total of 56 AT centers to provide technology and job training for PWDs across the nation under RESNA (Rehabilitation Engineering Society of North America) Catalyst Project. We checked http:www. resnaprojects.org recently and noticed the site was inactive. RESNA now manages PEAT (Partnership for Employment & Accessible Tech). It offers helpful webinars, but lack of Internet access prevents job seekers in remote areas from participating.

After the tears, there is time, Time to reflect, time to review. After the tears, there is time, Time to renew.

The losses of life bring tears and pain. Yet, after the tears, The gift of time still does remain.

Precious are the tears shed for loss of life and love, The gift of time offers the strength of life And the potential to rise above.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) The virtual world poses barriers for persons with disabilities just as the physical world does. The seventh Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), addressing this issue, will be celebrated on May 16, 2019. "The purpose of GAAD is to get people talking, thinking and learning about digital (web, software, mobile, etc.) accessibility and users with different disabilities."

GAAD co-founders, Joe Devon, a web developer, and Jennison Asuncion, a web accessibility specialist, conceptualized and promoted this day as an opportunity to share technology developments, training, and online forums for assistive technology. "Uplyfting" Partnerships with Disability Advocacy Organizations

Partnerships with Disability Advocacy Organizations Empowering Lyft’s Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Community Lyft

Empowering Lyft’s Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Community

Lyft is all about improving people’s lives with the world’s best transportation. Today, we’re announcing two product improvements and a partnership to empower our deaf and hard- of-hearing drivers, paving the way for smoother rides all around.

Amped-Up Ride Requests:

Lyft drivers who are deaf or hard of hearing have told us that they often lose out on rides because they miss the audible “ping” that typically alerts drivers to a ride request. Here’s where Amp — Lyft’s new, in-car communication device — comes in. Deaf and hard-of-hearing drivers will now see new ride requests displayed on their Amp device, with text reading “NEW RIDE.” This is just one more way that Amp continues to better connect our drivers and passengers.

Passenger Notifications:

Passengers will also experience a new app feature, letting them know that their driver is deaf or hard of hearing before their Lyft arrives. Through an SMS notification, passengers will be alerted to contact their driver by text rather than by phone, and to be sure to let the driver lead the way with communication.

National Association of the Deaf Partnership:

We’re also excited to announce a new partnership with the National Association of the Deaf (NAD). Through this partnership, Lyft and NAD will work together to develop further app improvements, grow awareness of economic opportunities for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, and engage policymakers on the importance of ridesharing access. With these product improvements and this new partnership, we’re committed to continuing to deliver a seamless, safe, and innovative experience for our diverse Lyft community.

Lyft Partners with National Federation of the Blind

Today, we’re excited to announce our partnership with the National Federation of the Blind, which has led the way in advocating for the advancement of the blind and low vision community. Access to affordable and flexible transportation can make a big difference in the lives of passengers with vision disabilities. But for many of these passengers, transportation options are limited. Through our collaboration with the National Federation of the Blind, we’re working to increase awareness of blind passengers’ rights, implement effective public policies, and expand transportation options for those who are blind or low vision.

Here are some of the ways our partnership is improving the ride experience for blind passengers:

Improving our app We’re working alongside National Federation of the Blind’s Access Technology staff to make our app more accessible to blind passengers. Educating the public and policymakers We’re collaborating with the National Federation of the Blind to educate the public and policymakers on the importance of access to transportation, and how ridesharing can improve the lives of blind passengers. We’re also participating in the National Federation of the Blind’s National Convention this summer in Orlando.

Educating drivers With the help of the National Federation of the Blind, we have updated Lyft’s service animal policy for riders to provide clear instructions for drivers so they can offer welcoming and comfortable rides to blind and low vision passengers. Lyft is also committing to ongoing education to its driver community about the policy, and why it’s important to blind and low vision riders. At Lyft, we celebrate a diverse culture where everyone feels welcome and respected. Our partnership with the National Federation of the Blind reflects an important step in our commitment to bringing the world’s best transportation to everyone — regardless of ability.

Because your vision shouldn’t impact your

8 access to transportation.

Neurodiversity

Thanks to Disabled World for an explanation of this term.

"Neurodiversity is broadly defined as an approach to learning and disability that suggests diverse neurological conditions appear as a result of normal human genome."

It was "originated in the late 1990s as a challenge to prevailing views of neurological diversity as inherently pathological, instead asserting that neurological differences should be recognized and respected as a social category on a par with gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or disability status."
