Science Fair Phase 1

Idea #1
O Without a doubt, every day we see how our soil
becomes more polluted. Humans constantly create
new pollutants and at the same time we observe that
the amount of green space decreases, also that
plants are deteriorating, specially in large cities.
Therefore, we want to analyze what kind of
relationship exists between soil pollution and the
development of plants.
Key words:
• Soil
• Pollution
• Plant
• Development
Idea #2
O Each day, humans try to find
alternative or natural sources of
energy, one of the most abundant and
potential candidates is water. So we’ll
like to see if it’s possible to generate
motion using water alone. Key words:
• Alternative
• Energy
• Water
• Motion
Idea #3
O Every plant needs nutrients to grow
and that can be supported by using a
fertilizer, but there can be different
types of fertilizers, with different
nutrients, so we’ll test if a homemade
fertilizer is worse or better than one
Key words:
that you can buy in a store. • Fertilizer
• Plants
• Homemade
• Growth
Phase 2
Hypothesis
O If plants grow in homemade fertilizer, then
the plant’s growth will show changes,
making the plants grow less in comparison
to generic fertilizers, because plants need
mineral nutrients in order to survive, the
ones they need the most are Nitrogen,
Phosphorus and Potassium.
Materials
The materials that will be used are:
➢ Synthetic fertilizer (1 bag)
➢ Banana peels (4)
➢ Egg Shells (4)
➢ Water (1500 mL)
➢ Plant pots (3)
➢ Bean Plants(3)
➢ Metric Ruler (1)
Procedure
O 1. 3 bean plants will start growing in the same place, with the
same conditions, including sunlight and climate

O 2. The only change between plant and plant is the type of

fertilizer each one is using to grow.

O 3. The first plant’s fertilizer will be one that can be purchased

in a store, containing Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium.

O 4. The second plant will grow using a homemade fertilizer, this

is because banana peels and egg shells generate a
considerable amount of organic waste, like dry matter of
protein and fiber, which tends to attract plagues, this is why
dead leaves have to be cut and removed from the plant.
5.The third plant will grow without any fertilizer, this plant will
work as a control to see how the type of fertilizer affects a
plant’s growth.

6. Once all the plants are ready with the previously

mentioned conditions, get ready 150 mL of water.

7. Plants will be watered, all the plants in equal amount, each

plant getting 50 mL of water every two days.

8. The plant growing with homemade fertilizer will need a

change of banana peel and egg shells every week and the
plant growing with the generic fertilizer needs another shot of
fertilizer every month.

9. The experiment will continue for five weeks, each week,

Monday, collecting data of the plant’s growth measuring from
the bottom of the pot to the highest place in the plant.

Scientific Question
O How does the fertilizer’s
composition and nutrients
affects a plant’s growth?
Hypothesis
O If plants grow in homemade fertilizer, then
the plant’s growth will show changes,
making the plants grow less in comparison
to generic fertilizers, because plants need
mineral nutrients in order to survive, the
ones they need the most are Nitrogen,
Phosphorus and Potassium.
Materials
The materials that will be used are:
➢ Synthetic fertilizer (1 bag)
➢ Banana peels (10)
➢ Water (1500 mL for all plants)
➢ Plant pots (6)
➢ Garden pansy plants (6)
Procedure
O 1. 3 garden pansy plants will start growing in the same place,
with the same conditions, including sunlight and climate

O 2. The only change between plant and plant is the type of

fertilizer each one is using to grow.

O 3. The first plant’s fertilizer will be one that can be purchased

in a store, containing Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium.

O 4. The second plant will grow using a homemade fertilizer,

which will be located in the bottom of the plant pot, this is
because banana peels generate a considerable amount of
organic waste, like dry matter of protein and fiber, which tends
to attract plagues, this is why it’s location is specific, this is
also why dead leaves have to be removed from the plant.
5.The third plant will grow without any fertilizer, this plant will work
as a control to see how the type of fertilizer affects a plant’s
growth.

6. Once all the plants are ready with the previously mentioned
conditions, get ready 150 mL of water.

7. Plants will be watered, all the plants in equal amount, each

plant getting 50 mL of water every two days.

8. The plant growing with homemade fertilizer will need a change

of banana peel every week and the plant growing with the generic
fertilizer needs another shot of fertilizer every month.

9. The experiment will continue for four weeks, each week,

Tuesday, collecting data of the plant’s growth measuring from the
bottom of the pot to the highest place in the plant.
Note
O The plant with the homemade fertilizer was not
looking how expected, so we decided to
research what could be happening.

O According to what we found, this is because

banana peels have fructose which is a type of
sugar found in vegetables honey and fruits and
so it attracted plagues, which affected the plants
so we had to cut the dead leaves, because other
leaves could be affected.
