To reduce run time, static load cases can be imported into an explicit model. This
tutorial will cover an example with a pre-tensioned bolt imported to a impact drop
model.
Follow tutorial 8 to create implicit bolt model; however, import ‘Tutorial 14.step’
rather than ‘tutorial 8.step’.
Density must also be added to the material properties for dynamic models. Use
2.7e-9 and 7.6e-9 for blocks and bolt respectively.
When importing, you must rename the parts. Avoid using special characters and
spaces, these may cause Abaqus to have errors. Good practice is to use only
letters, numbers, underscores and dashes.
Note: do not instance the 2D square, that will be the floor for the drop
model
Make sure to change the mesh element type of the bolt to linear or else the
import will not work.
Before summiting the job you need create a ‘Restart Output request’. To do
this, go to the ‘Step Module’ and select the ‘Restart Requests’ from the Output
drop down menu.
Ensure that all names of parts and instances are consistent between models
Then go to the Interaction module and create a reference point on the floor
square.
Now to import the data from the .res file made earlier. To do this create a new
Predefined Field and select Initial state
Selected bolt and blocks and input the name of the job for the previous model
Finish off the model by meshing the floor, create and run job.
Note: Make sure the nlgeom flag (in step basic options) is the same for both
models
