1. Definition of Value
Value is a personal belief about price over an idea of behavior, habits or objects that
follow a standard basis that influences behavior. Values relate to each other and form a
value system. Understanding the value system will understand nurses acting professionally.
There are several notions of value, namely as follows:
a. Values are valuable, beliefs held by someone according to their conscience (general
understanding)
b. Value is a set of personal beliefs and attitudes about truth, beauty, and appreciation of a
thought, object or behavior that is action-oriented and gives direction and meaning to one's
life (Simon, 1973).
c. Value is a person's belief about something valuable, truth or desire about specific ideas,
objects, or behaviors (Znowski, 1974)
d. Value is a feature, which is as follows :
1) Values form the basis of one's behavior
2) Real values of a person are shown through consistent behavior patterns.
3) Values become internal controls for one's behavior.
Values that are in accordance with the professional code of ethics include :
d. A nurse who respects the privacy rights of patients will apply to patients, as follows:
3) Provide a consultation place for patients with religious leaders or family members who
are sad
2. The value needed by the nurse
1.Altruism
Is a behavior that describes the care and welfare of others. The attitude of the value of
altruism displayed by nurses includes giving attention, commitment or principles that are
held firmly by nurses to maintain promises, compassion, generosity, and perseverance.
2. Equation
Equality is having the same rights and status, the attitude that can be shown by the nurse is
accepting, fair or not discriminative.
3. Empathy
Is trying to put yourself in someone who is concerned so that they can feel what is felt by
the people involved. Empathy is different from sympathy, attitude involves feeling towards
something, so that no longer being able to think objectively is an attitude of sympathy that
should not be owned by the nurse.
4. Freedom
Freedom is the capacity to choose activities including confidence, hope, discipline and
freedom.
5. Justice
The principle of justice is needed for the equal and fair treatment of others who uphold
moral, legal and humanitarian principles. This value is reflected in professional practice
when the nurse works for the right therapy according to the law, the standard of practice
and the right belief to obtain quality health care.
6.Autonomy
Autonomy is the ability to determine for yourself or manage yourself. This principle of
autonomy is a form of respect for a person, also seen as an agreement not to force and act
rationally. Professional practice reflects autonomy when nurses respect the right of patients
to make decisions about their care.
6. Non-Malefience
7. Benefit
Benefience is just doing something good, goodness, requires enforcement of the mistakes
or crimes of others.
8. Honesty
This value is needed by health care providers to convey the truth to each client and to
ensure that the client understands very well. Information must be available to be accurate,
comprehensive, and objective to facilitate the understanding and acceptance of existing
material, and tell the client the truth about everything related to her condition during
treatment.
9. Fidelity
Nurses are faithful to their commitments and keep their promises and keep client's secrets.
Obedience, loyalty, is a person's obligation to maintain the commitment he makes. Loyalty,
describes the nurse's compliance with the code of ethics which states that the basic
responsibility of the nurse is to improve health, prevent disease, restore health and
minimize suffering.
3. Value in Professional Ethics Ethics
Value is something that cannot be separated from the practice of the nursing profession.
The American Nurse Association (ANA) said that values are important and emphasized in the
Nursing Code of Ethics (ANA, 2001). Values are the views and evaluations of individuals or
communities about what is good and desirable or something that is not good and
undesirable (Rich and Butts, 2010).
Values in nursing have a vital role in solving ethical problems. Rich and Butts explain when
nurses are forced and pressured to do things that are not in accordance with their values,
the value of a nurse must be able to guide moral reasoning and the actions of nurses even
when others challenge the nurse's beliefs (Rich and Butts, 2010). From this it is clear that
the ethical or ethical behavior used by nurses in their professional practice cannot be
separated from the values of nursing itself as a basis, as a guide that gives enlightenment
and is contained in the Nursing Code of Ethics.
According to the classification theory of values, beliefs or attitudes can be a value if these
beliefs meet the following criteria:
e. Choose freely
