Annotated Bibliography

I approached this project after witnessing the struggle of a premature baby firsthand and

watching the struggle that the infant and his parents went through. This bibliography will

help fund my research for the question “what medical services are available to save a baby

born before 27 weeks?” and answer some necessary questions about services available and

services that will be available in the future.

Devlin, Hannah. “Artificial Womb for Premature Babies Successful in Animal Trials.” The

Guardian, Guardian News and Media, 25 Apr. 2017,

www.theguardian.com/science/2017/apr/25/artificial-womb-for-premature-babies-successful-

in-animal-trials-biobag.

This article, written by Hannah Devlin for The Guardian newspaper tells of a clinical trial on

premature lambs that were kept alive by an artificial womb so they could continue to develop

without all the adverse health risks to developing outside the womb. The article goes into

detail on what state premature infants are in when they are born at 23 weeks, and the article

also goes into detail on how the artificial womb works in continuing gestation and

development.
Kinsella, John P. “Clinical Trials of Inhaled Nitric Oxide Therapy in the Newborn.”

Pediatrics in Review, American Academy of Pediatrics, 1 Nov. 1999,

pedsinreview.aappublications.org/content/20/11/e110.

In this article Dr, John P. Kinsella describes the Clinical trials of Nitric Oxide used to treat

Pulmonary Hypertension in newborn infants. The article appears to have been used originally to

instruct participating doctors on how to administer the correct dose and determine the correct

scenario to use this treatment.

The article can be found on a news and journals gateway although it was originally published

medical journal funded by a children’s hospital in Colorado. This article will help provide

information about a possible life-saving treatment for newborns affected by pulmonary

hypertension.

Koh, Ji Won, et al. “Transient Intubation for Surfactant Administration in the Treatment of

Respiratory Distress Syndrome in Extremely Premature Infants.” Research Gate, Sept. 2018,

www.researchgate.net/publication/328250551_Transient_intubation_for_surfactant_administ

ration_in_the_treatment_of_respiratory_distress_syndrome_in_extremely_premature_infants

This paper written originally in the Korean Journal of Medicine by Ji Won Koh and his

colleagues explains the process of the Transient intubation in Respiratory distressing

premature infants. This article goes into extreme detail on the process of intubation and how

effective the method was in relieving respiratory distress in premature infants. This article

will be useful in the description of respiratory distress and what it can mean for infants as

well as explaining how to prevent infant mortality.

Kuiper, Nick, director. Preemie. Preemie, Thesis Film for an MFA in Broadcast and Cinema

Arts, 2011, vimeo.com/198937062.

This documentary film directed and produced by Nick Kuiper provides a first-hand account of

the struggle of a premature infant and her parents. The film references the treatments used to

save Molly’s(the infant in the film) life and struggle to survive under adverse conditions. This

film will help provide an inside look and first-hand account of treatments used to save premature

infants and the conditions that they have to endure.

“Premature Infant: Causes, Complications, and More.” Healthline, Healthline Media,

www.healthline.com/health/pregnancy/premature-infant#treatment.

This article written by Healthline.com details what it means to have a premature infant, the

conditions a premature infant can be born with, why a baby is born premature, and the treatment

of the premature infant. This article will provide ways to prevent premature birth and what to do

if your baby is born prematurely.

Talavera, Maria M., et al. “Quality Improvement Initiative to Reduce the Necrotizing

Enterocolitis Rate in Premature Infants.” Pediatrics, American Academy of Pediatrics, 1

May 2016, pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/137/5/e20151119.abstract.

This article by Maria Talavera and her co-writers gives information about a study run in

2010-2012 to lower the number of premature infants that contract Necrotizing Enterocolitis,

which is a medical condition where part of the bowel tract dies causing painful symptoms

which more often than not lead to the infant’s death. In this article, they explain the list of
treatments they used and reference methods like early breastfeeding, and pasteurized donor

milk if the mother cannot breastfeed along with blood transfusions.

This article is published on an article and journal gateway approved by the American

Academy of Pediatrics. This article will be useful in my research project as it provides a

more in-depth look into the struggle of the premature infant and the steps taken to save their

lives.

Zimmerman, Emily, and Kelsey Thompson. “The Evidence Surrounding Recent

Technologies Used in Neonatal Intensive Care Units to Assess and Treat Feeding

Development in Premature Infants.” Perspectives of the ASHA Special Interest Groups, vol.

3, no. 13, Aug. 2018, pp. 157–171. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1044/2018pass:[_]PERS-SIG13-

2018-0003.

This article written by Emily Zimmerman and Kelsey Thompson shines a light onto the

recent developments in technology to assist premature infants in feeding development. This

16-page paper goes into great detail and lists each method that was effective in treating

premature infants who were having trouble feeding. This article references each method and

digs in deeper explaining what the method is, what it does, and how effective it was in the

treatment of the infants.

This article can be found in the Sinclair database, but it was originally published by the

“Perspectives of the ASHA(American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) Special

Interest Groups”. This article will provide much needed inclusive information into the

trickiness of treating an underdeveloped infant.
