Market Survey & Uses for Lactulose and Fertilizer from Food Waste

1. Lactulose

Lactulose has been widely used to prevent constipation, treating hepatic encephalopathy
and gastrointestinal disorders. The needs of elderly customers, athletes, nutrition conscious
population leading the growth of lactulose market whereas the excessive consumption of
lactulose lead to the effects such as abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting
results in the moderate growth of lactulose market. The lactulose is widely used as a filler
for capsules and tablets in the medicinal industry and there are quite a few health benefits
of lactulose as nutrition ingredients, which includes stimulating effect, improvement in
calcium absorption, and stimulation of intestinal flora fuels the growth of lactulose market.
Lactulose is also used in fermented milk production to reduce the growth period and favor
the growth of bifid bacteria. The uses of Lactulose shown in the following table.

Table 1: Uses of Lactulose

Field Application Reference Reference

Medical - Chronic constipation and hepatic (Vera & Illanes, 2016)
encephalopathy. (Chen, et al., 2012)
- Inflammatory bowel disease.
- Colon carcinogenesis.
- Ischemic stroke
Food - Infant formula. (Parekh, et al., 2016)
- Yogurt.
- Fermented soymilk.
- Fermented skim milk.
Feed - Feed additive. (Oliveira, et al., 2011)

Lactulose has been found as a component of colonic microflora of bottle-feed babies is

identical that of adults which is resulting in the growth of lactulose market during the
forecast period. Lactulose consist of detoxifying properties that is helpful in the treatment
of hyperammonemia caused by portal systematic encephalopathy led to increasing
lactulose market in pharma industries. The increasing demand for baby formula products
containing lactose and its derivative i.e. lactulose by dual employed households is also
projected to register a significant growth in the global lactulose market mainly in the
emerging countries. Characteristics such as easy availability, cost effectiveness, and water
solubility are expected to increase the global lactulose market during the forecast period.

Global Lactulose Market Outlook

Europe represents the leading market worldwide owing to extensive popularity of lactose
and its derivative products. Asia Pacific appeared as the fastest growing market with an
accumulative CAGR led by increasing disposable income, changing lifestyle, growing
population. Lactulose is mass-produced according to present guidelines of Good
Manufacturing Practices and meet the specifications of the European Pharmacopoeia, US
Pharmacopoeia and Japanese Pharmacopoeia (CMI, 2019).

Size of the Lactulose Market Worldwide

This statistic shows the size of the lactulose market worldwide in 2013 and 2016, and a
forecast for 2021. In 2016, the global lactulose market was worth around 148 million U.S.
dollars and is expected to grow to around 159 million dollars by 2021 (Statista, 2019) as
can be shown in Figure (1).

2. Fertilizer from Food Waste

The global food waste management market is estimated at USD 31.71 Billion in 2017, and
is projected to reach USD 42.37 Billion by 2022 at the CAGR of 5.97% during the forecast
period. The primary factors that drive the food waste management market are increase in
the usage of organic waste for the production of animal feed and fertilizers, need for
reducing greenhouse gas emission, and rise in global food waste (PRNewswire, 2017).

The global fertilizer market is expected to value at USD 155.8 billion in 2019, and it is
expected to register a CAGR of 3.8% during the forecast period (2019-2024) (Mordor,
2019). In 2018, Asia-Pacific was the largest geographical segment of the market studied
and accounted for a share of around 60% of the overall market. The fertilizer industry was
heavily challenged in 2016. It was confronted with uneven global nutrient demand, soft
economic prospects, depressed crop prices, rising market competition, and volatile energy
prices. This combination created high uncertainty in the fertilizer market throughout the
year (GVR, 2017).

Since 2017, a sustained downturn in the world consumption of fertilizer market, coupled
with decreasing crop prices, mainly in the United States and Asia-Pacific, has made it
difficult to maintain consistent growth. The major technological innovations in the
industry, along with growing demand for bio-based and micronutrient fertilizers are
expected to drive the market. However, regulatory and environmental constraints and high
production cost are likely to act as drawbacks in the industry.

Asia-Pacific accounts for 60% of the global fertilizer market. South Asia and East Asia are
the major fertilizer consumers in Asia. In 2015, Asia’s share of global nitrogen
consumption was 60%, with China representing approximately half of the said
consumption. In Asia, rice is a big nitrogen-consuming crop. Owing to the growing concern
over the current pattern of fertilizer use, with heavy reliance on nitrogenous fertilizer,
coupled with poor nutrition management, lack of complementary inputs, declining soil
fertility, and weak marketing and distribution systems, have all emerged as major restraints
to improve fertilizer effectiveness in the region. These concerns have given way to bio
fertilizers and micronutrient fertilizers to grow and fuel the fertilizers market in the region
(MR, 2019).
