com right now and search definition of literacy the second link that comes up will link you to a page on the Bridgewater State University website. It states that literacy is the ability to make and communicate meaning from and by the use of a variety of socially contextual symbols So what justifies as a socially contextual symbol? A picture? A sound? In this multimedia literacy assignment, I used a few different types of contextual symbols to help carry my message to the audience. My story was about how I began mowing my neighbor s lawn when I was a freshmen and how it eventually evolved into me developing a landscaping busines s. It taught me not to be afraid to take on responsibility and made me into a more literate and all around better person. I decided to do a video for my multimedia project because my story is linear and needs to be told chronologically or it would be com pletely misunderstood by the audience. The opening slide had a backdrop of grass and the title is My Cutting Edge , the viewer may not initially understand the reference but will quickly come to understand how it all it all relates. This is quickly followed by a short clip of my old favorite video game, for at the beginning of this story I am in the stage of my life where I was extremely lazy and this single video game was basically the reason I woke up every morning. The back ground music is the son g I m just a
Comment [n4]: Good job realizing this Comment [n3]: This is a really great introduction. You bring readers in with a quote and relate the assignment to your project. Well done. Comment [n2]: Really? That is pretty cool. Comment [n1]: Great title
kid by Simple Plan; I chose this song because it parallels my point on how I was merely a kid that was lazy and uninterested in doing anything productive. Subsequently to that clip, the presentation moves to the next step where I began to initiate the first steps of developing my business. An image of my actual first business card represents how I began to advertise and grow. The music changes to Imma Shine by the Young Bloodz, the buildup of the violins carries along the image of moving forward toward success while the lyrics describe prospective success in the future. I use green font in one slide as a sign of prosperity alongside red font as a sign of the opposite. The video moves to a point where it describes that I am becoming more academically literate, and successful, this is depicted with images of me studying. Following that I move on to becoming more involved, which is shown in images of me doing track and playing basketball, as well as becoming involved in business competitions and once again achieving success there. Finally the story comes to an end with a motion to the present, choosing to go to college and specializing in the field of business. The audience can see this, for the last image is black and white with the one exception on the Business School flag hanging in the pillars of Boyden Hall. The Sound clip behind the second half of the video is the most important one; it is upbeat and is entirely about learning personal confidence and chasing dreams. The song Fly by the pack coincides perfectly with the message of my story: Going from being lazy and unsuccessful, working hard eventually led to a growth in my personal confidence and helped me learn to take on challenges and become more socially and academicall y successful.
Comment [n5]: Love that song. Love them
When I received my first major assignment for my first college writing class, I was amazed to find that it was not an essay; in fact the first assignment was about how to communicate without just words. We learned how different kinds of medi a can be more effective than others depending on the argument being stated. I never paid much attention to the different aspects that were incorporated in different types of communication. I had never realized that small details, descriptions, colors, eve n different types of fonts can be used to portray different ideas. In my mind I didn t consider videos, posters or music as types of literacy, in my mind literacy was just reading and writing and it was as simple as that. However the truth is that other medias can be much more effective when I am trying to back a particular premise to an argument other than a bunch of words on a piece of paper.
Comment [n6]: I am really glad that you have learned more about the broad definition of literacy. From a writing standpoint, you seem to do a great job of crafting sentences and pargraphs that convey info to the reader and transition nicely. Great work.
I first want to say how I think it is really awesome that at 16 you started a business and learned to become so responsible. Not many can say they worked for themselves at that age.
As for your movie- I think your argument is well crafted and organized b ut needs a tiny bit of work. There are a few gaps that need to be filled in. First, why did you think to advertise, start a business, and buy equipment? Second, what did you learn from doing the day to day aspects of running your business? Third, can you make the connections between your business and
schools and sports more clear? Why exactly did you start to get involved and excel in those areas. I think your argument and story line is all there you just need to work on the details. Also, what happened in these business conferences? Your design elements, audio, images are all well chosen. That part of the project works well and reflects your message. It is clear, simple, and easy to understand while still keeping viewers interested. The audio track is also very appropriate.
