Lesson Plan: Algebra 2 (Pre-AP Dual Language): Lesson in both Spanish and English

Teacher: Ivette Falcon

Objective: Adding and Subtracting Grade Level: Juniors (11th Grade)
Rational Expressions.

Objective/Purpose:

Students will learn how to add and subtract rational expressions.

Materials/Resources/Equipment Needed:

Worksheets, Whiteboard, Markers and Erasers for Whiteboard, Pencils/Pens, Kuta-Adding

and Subtracting Rational Expressions (For examples).

Instructional Delivery:

The lesson will start with having three students going to the board and do 3 different problems
from the multiplying and dividing rational expressions homework. We will then move on to
direct instruction on adding and subtracting rational expressions. Then students will move on
to practice adding and subtracting rational equations by playing Bingo in partners. Finally,
students will have some time at the end to begin their homework.

Engage: (5-10 min) – Homework Review

We will start the lesson by reviewing the multiplying and dividing rational expressions
homework as a class. I will have three random students go to the board and work on problems
1, 2, and 8.

Explore: (5-10 min) – Homework Discussion

Once students are done writing done their solutions to the problems on the board, they each
will explain to the class how they solved for it.

Explain: (25-30 min)-Lecture

We will then move on to the lecture part of the lesson. I will begin by doing some traditional
fraction examples so students can relate rational expressions to something they already know.
Then we will move on to doing some examples of adding and subtracting rational expressions
(explaining the process). Then I will move on to letting them do some examples independently
as practice and then solve for them together as a class.

Ex I will be showing the process for:

𝑢−𝑣 6𝑢−3𝑣 7𝑢−4𝑣 3 4 7𝑥+4 5𝑦−3 3𝑦+2 2𝑌−5
+ 8𝑣 = 8𝑣 + 𝑥−8 = (𝑥+7)(𝑥−8) − =
8𝑣 𝑥+7 𝑋 𝑋 𝑋
4𝑥 5 −4𝑥 − 5𝑥 2 + 25
− =
𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 5 4 4(𝑥 + 5)(𝑥 − 1)
7 2 9 7 3 4 9 14 133
Ex I will let them work on and then do as a class: 6 + 6 = 6 −6=6 + =
6 5 7 35

Elaborate (30-35 min)-Game

I will then move on to letting the students practice in partners adding and subtracting rational
expressions by playing a game a game of Bingo.
Instructions: Students play against a partner in a game of Bingo.
Student A selects a problem, and BOTH work the problem in the appropriate box on the
answer document/scratch sheet of paper.
If Student B agrees with Student A’s answer, Student A puts their initials in the box. If
they disagree and Student B is right, Student B steals the box. If there is a disagreement
the teacher is called for clarification.
The players alternate selecting problems.

Prize: The first 3 winners to call bingo will receive small prizes.
Evaluate-Formative assessment

I will use formative assessment at the beginning of the lesson by seeing how students are able
to explain their problems at the front of the board. I will also be asking questions throughout
the entire lesson. As well walking around and helping them when doing problems.

Closure (10-15 min)-Homework

Students will start to work on the Aleks Adding and Subtracting Rational Expressions
worksheets which will be their homework. Students can ask me for help for these questions
during this time.
