Writing Assignment: Self-Evaluation of Skills and Interests

Sample Answer

 Career related interests

o I am interested in helping children learn to read.

o I enjoy using computers to create web pages.

o I am interested in designing education software to help children in school.

 Career Related Skills

o I am good at using to computers to create web pages, spreadsheets, multimedia

presentations, and computer programs.

o I can make children calm down or stop crying by talking to them and playing with them

o I can solve complex problems by thinking logically.

o I am adept in mathematics.

o I can work well with teams.

While I could list many more skills I chose these because they are the skills most relevant to my career
interest. I discovered my career interest by reflecting on my pride experiences and performing two career
interest quizzes on the web.

When I wrote my pride stories, I realized that my most memorable experiences were related to helping others
especially children and solving complex problems. For example, I once volunteered to help mentally
challenged children. There was one child who was especially difficult. She was constantly crying and refused
to join the group. The teacher was busy with the other children. Therefore I sat down with the child and started
talking to her. I don’t think she understood me but she must have liked the sound of my voice. Eventually she
took a ball and rolled it at me. We then began playing with the ball. After I calmed the child down we joined
the larger group. I really enjoyed helping this child and would like to continue working with children in the
future.

The second experience that I am the most proud of is completing a very difficult computer program. The
teacher assigned the program and no one in the class was able to create a program that met all of the project
requirements. When I received my graded program back the teacher simply wrote “Nice Work!” This teacher
never writes comments on papers except for a numeric grade. I have received many scores of 100 but have
never received such a comment. Coming from this teacher, this comment felt like high praise. What I enjoyed
most was logically thinking through the program and then coming up with the right solution.

The pride experience process was enjoyable because it helped me to think about what I might like to choose
as a career. By combing my two most memorable pride experiences, I concluded that I wanted to pursue a
career that would involve children and my love of solving problems through computer programming. I think
that I would enjoy designing educational software. I would have to work with children to get feedback during
the design process and I would also be able to use my problem solving skills.

My career choice was confirmed when I took the Princeton Review Career Quiz at
http://www.princetonreview.com/cte/quiz/career_quiz1.asp and found that my interest color is blue. According
to the quiz, “People with blue Interests like job responsibilities and occupations that involve creative,
humanistic, thoughtful, and quiet types of activities. Blue Interests include abstracting, theorizing, designing,
writing, reflecting, and originating, which often lead to work in editing, teaching, composing, inventing,
mediating, clergy, and writing. “ This description confirmed my interest in designing educational software.
Next I visited America's Career InfoNet: Skills Profiler http://www.careerinfonet.org/acinet/skills/default.aspx?
nodeid=20 and examined the skills considered essential for computer programmers. Some of these skills are
critical thinking, complex problem solving, and mathematics. All of these are skills that I posses. These career
tests were very helpful because they confirmed that I am on the right track as afar as choosing a career.

I identified the following traits as my strongest by visiting the Discover Yourself website,
http://www.csun.edu/~sp20558/dis/discover.html, recommended din the course material. I numbered all
the traits from 1 to 3 with 3 being the most important to me. Below are the three traits that I number as
being most important to me

o Perseverance is a good way to describe me. Once I start something I must finish it no
matter what. This is why I was able to complete the computer program I discussed in my pride
experience. Because I refused to give up, I was able to complete this assignment.

o Compassion describes me well. I enjoy helping people especially children. My

compassion and desire to help led me to do volunteer work with children

o Perfectionism also describes me because I try to achieve the highest possible degree of
excellence. At school I complete all of my assignments on time I am double check everything

 Myers-Briggs Personality Type

ENFJ - Extraverted (39%), Intuitive(25%) Feeling (38%) Judging (28%)
I took the Jung Typology Test at http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes1.htm to discover my
Myers-Briggs Personality Type. ENFJs are the benevolent and charismatic with excellent interpersonal
skills. ENFJs see the big picture and can juggle many responsibilities or projects simultaneously and can.
NFJs know and appreciate people and sometimes neglect themselves and their own needs for the needs
of others. This description is surprisingly accurate. Interesting the career choices suggested for ENFJs
include computer programming and education. This confirms that ENFJ is my personality type since I
decided before taking this test that I want to pursue the creation of educational software. I do not feel
there is any other personality type that would describe me.

 Holland Career Types

ISC - Investigative, Social, Conventional. Each of these types describes me in the listed order. First of all I
am investigative because I like to analyze and solve problems. This is why I like computer programming. I
am also social because I want to help others by training them. By designed educational software I can
provides training to thousands of people. I also enjoy working with small groups and individuals. Finally I
am conventional because I like to finish project san implement plans. Computer programming is all about
creating an algorithm, which is a plan, and then implementing it. All of these types describe me very well
