Prompt: The the people we are surrounded by and the things we go through in life change how
we see ourselves. In the text, how do social influences and experiences shape the protagonist's
attitude towards herself? (Type your response in the space below).

In “A Dozen Keychains”, we can see how her being from a different culture, growing up with
different customs and peer pressure from her [Firoozeh’s] american peers mentally affects her
in a negative way. This can be seen through this quote from the text “...your nose points
downward, so I figured that’s because you’re always looking at the ground” and everyone
laughs.” When the person speaking to the speaker says this in a mocking way, it makes our
speaker feel self conscious about her looks, which can lower her self esteem and mentally
affect her negatively as said before in the previous statement. Another example of this can be
seen in this quote “She also decides not to bathe, since doing so involves getting naked in front
of others, which she’s never done before. Instead of participating in the activities, such as
archery, cooking, or horseback riding, she sits alone making key chains every day.” This also
has to do with her feeling like she can’t get along with the other kids with her being a bit
reserved and being seen as “different” from the others. There being a cultural difference which
leads to her deciding not to bathe for the whole time also adds to some of her insecurity while
she’s there, which can have a negative impact on her wellbeing.
