NARRATIVE REPORT ON GULAYAN SA PAARALAN

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
S.Y. 2018-2019

I. INTRODUCTION

Cesar E. Vergara Memorial High School has been known as one of the leading
schools in town in terms of land cultivation which pave its way to achieve awards and
recognitions in different competitions such as the preceding Gulayan sa Paaralan Project of
the Department of Education and just recently the AgriSikat sponsored by CLSU.

Although, CEVMHS has already established a name in the said field, it ensures the
preservation of its rich soil not only for the prestige but to encourage vegetable plantation
and consumption even at the comfort of their own backyard to promote healthy and
balanced diet at a low cost.

In response to the Division Memorandum reading the Division- wide Gulayan sa

Paaralan Project in observance of the DepEd’s campaign for Sustaining the Implementation
of the Gulayan Sa Paaralan Program In Public Elementary And Secondary Schools
Nationwide, CEVMHS launched its school- based Gulayan sa Paaralan contest by
designating respective areas to different departments which they have to maintain for the
entire school year.

The area assignment was done through a fishbowl lottery wherein coordinators
from different disciplines pick out their respective land area moreover, the specific
materials which has to be utilized in the urban gardening such as tires, bamboo, plastic
bottles, and the like. And as for the English Department we were assigned to cultivate the
backyard of the Alvin Type Building using drums and pales.

II. PLANNING

Aside from the bare land, plants also gradually breed and nurture in our designated
garden because of the little amount of sunlight passing through the location of our garden
due to the towering wall protecting the school from the outsiders.

These are some of the difficulties we had to face which called the attention of our
subject coordinator, Mr. Felipe B. Dionisio Jr., who later on called the attention of all
concerned teachers in the department to divide the labor and to confer on the strategy on
how to enhance our garden. Moreover, we have listed different materials and plants
needed for the improvement of the garden such as pales, drums, and a variety of seedlings.
III. PROCEDURES

 The teachers prepared the necessary tools and materials for gardening such as rake,
shovel, hammer, wires, bamboo shoots, nails, drums/gallons & pales, etc.
 Students were also requested to bring drums/gallons and pales which they no
longer use at home and they were also asked to collect plastic bottles within the
vicinity of the school not only to be utilized in the garden but also to reduce school
wastes.
 The school provided some agricultural seeds and seedlings courtesy of Agri students handled by
Ma’am Luzviminda Rule while the rest of the expenses were shouldered by the us, teachers from
the English Department.
 Some students alternately render gardening services such as watering of plants,
weeding, and planting of vegetables.
 Every morning, Grade 8- Peace students visit the garden to water the plants and
clean the surroundings.
 Ma’am Imee declared September 21 as Agri Day wherein all students only had to
perform gardening activities in order to cultivate their respective garden areas.
 The first evaluation was held September 29, 2018 wherein our garden did not make
to the top for it was a bit of a challenge for us to maximize the use of pales and
drums as compared to other garden tools and materials. This lead Ma’am Rule to
modify some the mechanics for the said contest by giving all the departments the
freedom to use any resources available and deemed necessary for the beautification
of their respective garden.
IV. ACCOMPLISHMENT

 We have come up with the use of pales and oil container as our major materials in
the garden.
 We have also used bamboos, tires, plastic bottles and paint for the design physical
layout.
 The plants we have cultivated include eggplant, red and green pepper, bitter gourd,
string beans, mustard, petchay, kangkong, and okra plus a few herbal plants.
 This activity enlightens and teaches our beloved students to the importance of planting more
vegetables not only in the school premises but also in their community or at the very comfort of
their homes to become a source of food for their family or as a good start for small scale
production/ business.
 Moreover, this Gulayan sa Paaralan Project helps to promote environmental awareness since
plants and trees are important to reduce pollution and to preserve the environment.
