The Hexad Combustion Unit utilizes NAO’s patented tandem block principle which has suc-
cessfully served for years in petroleum refineries and chemical plants throughout the world.
The added features of the Hexad unit were brought about by research and test to develop a
design that would overcome the fouling of gas orifices by oil droplets in vertical firir
burners. These units also provide minimum and more accurate air adjustment for tt,
burning characteristics of dual, and in some cases, triple fuels.
NAO’s Hexad Combustion Unit for combination fuels consists of an oil burner and

an arrangement of gas manifolds with standpipes surmounted by gas tips.
These Hexad gas tips are drilled for gas pressure, volume and heating value to
provide flame patterns best suited for the particular furnace. The oil burners

sion of oil and atomizing steam. The yoke of this detaching gear easily

swings aside to permit removal of the burner gun without the use of tools.
The oil and gas elements of NAO’s Hexad Combustion Unit are light
\ L in weight and are mounted independent of each other. This permits
removal, by one man, of either fuel element for inspection or
L cleaning, while firing continues on the alternate fuel with no
L loss of production.
\ Under unusual conditions Hexad burners may be operated
at suitable turndown, to satisfy the heating requirements
of the many varied processes of the chemical-petroleum
industry.

Although NAO Hexad Combustion Units are primarily designed to
fire upward, they are capable, in a modified arrangement, of firing
horizontally, as shown on the opposite page, or downward to
lform to furnace-heater requirements.

SllUPllFIED AIR ADJUSTMENT

NAO’s exclusively designed secondary air band is manually adjust-
able to provide the exact setting for low excess air, with resultant
minimum heat loss up the stack.
NAO secondary air bands automatically lock in any position and
they remain free from gripping as a result of heat changes. These capacities are based on a furnace draft of 0.20 inches W. C.
at burner level. Higher or lower draft conditions will vary capacities
accordingly.
Attainment of these capacities is contingent upon such factors as
@U/CK COMBUSTION furnace design, flame travel, available draft and fuel utilities.

The metal encased refractory burner block provides sufficient heat

radiation to quickly initiate combustion. Burner block details are GAS PIEOTS
shown in drawing R-10212. Gas pilots can be provided for operation at pressures ranging from
1 to 5 p.s.i.g. When specified these pilots are inserted through the
end plate of the secondary air register.
NAO Gas pilots are stable and positive and they can be used for
