CHAPTER 2

COMPONENTS AND DESCRIPTION

2.1 Components used

The following components are used to construction of automated self

controlled foldable handy wheelchair.

2.1.1 Plywood

The base of the wheelchair is made by the plywood. plywood of ¾ inch

as shown in fig 2.1. It have good strength and it can be cut into variety of
shapes. The young’s modulus of the plywood is 6.96-8.55GPa.

2.1.2 DC Motor

Motor powered rear wheel drive is used to drive the wheel chair system
as shown in Figure2.2. A motor (DC -12 v) is enough here to drive the whole
system . It has speed 200RPM and torque 12.5Kg-cm.

2.1.3 Wiper motor

Wiper motor is used for vertical movement of the seat and control of
the steering in the wheelchair. A 12V DC motor is used to achieve these
objectives. This is shown in Figure 2.3.

2.1.4 Battery

A reliable constant power supply is very much necessary in this system

for getting required function. For the power supply we have chosen a
Rechargeable battery (DC-24V) to meet the power requirement. The battery
demands a recharge (charger input – 230V single phase) and power backup for
48 hours. This is shown in figure 2.4.

2.1.5 Scissor jack

For vertical height adjustment of seat, Scissor Jack is used. By providing

a motor kit with the jack system, Easy control on the seat arrangement can be
achieved. The scissor jack having the capability to lift about 400kg within the
range of 90 mm – 300 mm. This is shown in figure 2.5

2.1.6 Nylon wheel

Wheel is used to movement of the wheelchair. Front wheels are very

flexible when compared to the rear wheels. The standard diameter of the wheel
is 10mm is shown in figure 2.6

2.1.7 DPDT switch

Double pole Double throw switch is shown in figure 2.7, it routes

two separate circuits. The position of the switch determines the number of ways
in which each of the two contacts can be routed.

2.1.8 Trolley bag

The whole system is enclosed by bag and trolley arrangement is fitted

with bag for easy movement of the system. This made of polyester or nylon is
shown in figure 2.8

2.1.9 Speed Control DC Motor

The basic principal of the dc motor is a device which converts dc energy

into mechanical energy. When the current carrying armature is connected to the
supply end through commentator segment as shown in figure 2.9

2.2.1 Reverse Alarm

A back up beeper also known as reverse alarm, A device originally

intended to warm passers- by of a vehicle moving in reverse. They typically
produce 1000 HZ pure ton beeps at 97-112 decibels as shown in figure 2.10

2.2.2 Electrical wire

A cable is a thick wire, or a group of wires inside a rubber or plastic

covering, which is used to carry electricity or signal. A wire is a single
conductor as shown in figure 2.11

2.2.3 Reverse Camera

A backup camera is a special type of video camera that is produced

specifically for the purpose of being attached to the rear of a vehicle to aid in
backing up, and to alleviate the rear blind spot as shown in figure 2.12

2.2.4 Horn

Horn is used to warn others by making loud sound as shown in

figure 2.13

2.2.5 cardboard

Cardboard gives the support and stiffness to the bag as shown in figure
