Advances of Machine Learning (AI) in Pavement Design and Analysis

Abstract
Machine learning focuses on the development of computer programs that can access data and use
it to learn for themselves. It is an application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that provides the system
the ability to automatically learn and improve from experience. Machine learning finds relevance
in solving practical problems which often are too complex to be handled by some traditional
methods of modeling and optimization like linear regression. These methods are usually limited by
their experimental conditions and theoretical foundations. Globally, machine learning has found
extensive use in; finance, healthcare, social media, gaming and civil engineering. With emergence
of erroneous data, increased uncertainty of information and large engineering information datasets,
the use of machine learning in civil engineering applications has been rather imperative. Though
still relatively nascent, compared with other industries, various civil engineering researchers have
attested to its ability to offer promising results using; artificial neutral networks, genetic algorithms,
fuzzy Logic, reinforcement learning and fuzzy genetic, to name but a few. Pavement design and
analysis is a major component of transportation engineering, encompassing structural and
functional responses of a pavement to actions of elements that induce modifications to the original
pavement structure. Many researchers have made significant contribution in utilizing the potential
of machine learning to pavement design and analysis. Though its proliferation is rather below par,
it presents a huge platform for upcoming researchers to explore the potential of machine learning
in this field (pavement design and analysis) to accelerate technological advancements. I will be
discussing current advances of machine learning in pavement design and analysis and its potential
to hasten growth of various untapped areas in this field of transportation engineering.
